Men’s stores are influencing retail far beyond menswear by treating the shop as a connected service environment rather than a room full of merchandise. Their most transferable practices are clear lifestyle-based zoning, flexible fixtures, fitting and customization services, integrated digital tools, and events that give customers a reason to visit. For developers, architects and contractors, that changes the brief from maximizing selling area to coordinating circulation, power, data, staff workflows and adaptable finishes.
The model is emerging as menswear becomes more casual and more digitally connected. It is a useful laboratory for any category where shoppers need advice, comparison, personalization or a reason to choose a physical visit over a transaction online.

Why menswear has become a retail laboratory
Menswear is large enough to reveal sector-wide behavior but concentrated enough for retailers to test new formats quickly. The International Association of Department Stores (IADS) reported in a January 2026 release that menswear represented an average 17% of department-store turnover in 2025, up from 16% the year before. Casualwear accounted for an average 70% of menswear sales. Online sales also rose to 19% of menswear turnover, from 17%.

A department built around formal jackets, suiting and infrequent purchases can rely on fixed categories and a conventional sales journey. A department dominated by casual, replenishable and sport-adjacent products needs faster navigation, more cross-category combinations and a stronger reason to leave home. The resulting solutions are relevant to beauty, electronics, sporting goods, home improvement and other sectors with high comparison or service needs.

Menswear is not proof that every retailer should copy a clothing store. It is evidence that several broad problems—shopper uncertainty, weak store traffic and disconnected online and offline experiences—can be addressed through coordinated design.
Casualization changes the physical-store brief
From departments to occasions and lifestyles
When casualwear averages 70% of menswear sales, the useful organizing principle is often the customer’s task rather than a strict product taxonomy. A shopper may be assembling a travel wardrobe, preparing for a wedding, replacing everyday basics or looking for an outfit that moves between work and leisure. Clothing, footwear, accessories and services can be presented together around that purpose.
For a construction team, this means planning for sightlines and adjacency rather than simply allocating bays to product families. A footwear wall, alterations counter and fitting rooms may need to sit within the same journey as the relevant apparel. Electrical and data points should be distributed so that displays can move as seasonal or occasion-led zones change.
Flexible fixtures reduce the cost of change
Casual assortments turn more frequently than traditional formalwear departments. Freestanding rails, demountable shelving, lockable display modules and ceiling systems with spare capacity allow a retailer to resize a category without rebuilding the shop. Floors, wall protection and joinery should be selected for repeated reconfiguration, not just opening-day appearance.
Flexibility does not mean an unfinished interior. A durable base palette, consistent lighting grid and standardized connection details can provide a recognizable environment while allowing merchandise and local programming to change.
Clearer zoning makes a store easier to use
Men’s Wearhouse: categories, experience and one-stop tasks
An SEC filing describing current Men’s Wearhouse concepts says the stores use “flexible layouts centered on key product categories such as shirting, dedicated experience areas and an event-focused format that supports one-stop solutions across retail and rental.” The important design move is not a particular fixture. It is the combination of visible categories, a defined service destination and enough room for a customer to complete several related tasks in one visit.
In construction terms, a one-stop format requires more than sales floor. Fitting rooms, consultation points, rental or pickup functions, storage and staff circulation must be placed so that they do not compete for the same narrow aisle. Service counters need power, secure storage and a back-of-house route for incoming and outgoing goods.

Jos. A. Bank: fit, brand and lifestyle as navigation cues
The same filing says Jos. A. Bank uses centralized core assortments and a layout highlighting “fit, brand and lifestyle” in a more elevated and intuitive shopping experience. This is a wayfinding system expressed through the environment: customers can understand where to start, what each zone is for and when to ask for help.
The principle transfers to any complex store. Use a small number of legible entry views, keep category markers at the shopper’s eye line and avoid hiding high-value services behind dense fixtures. A clear route often improves confidence more than additional display capacity.
Evidence from the John Lewis Oxford Street redesign
REA FE Studio’s case study of a 20,000-square-foot menswear redesign at John Lewis Oxford Street covered the shop environment, fitting rooms, material specification and digital integration. The project prioritized clarity and intuitive zoning for shoppers who might feel uncertain navigating fashion. That emphasis matters to builders because confidence is produced by coordinated details: lighting levels, acoustic control, fitting-room privacy, floor transitions, sign placement and staff visibility.
Digital tools are becoming part of the building
Fixtures that recognize inventory
British GQ’s coverage of menswear retail described RFID-enabled clothing racks. RFID can help staff locate sizes, trigger product information or keep online and store inventory aligned. The rack therefore becomes a technology fixture, not just a piece of millwork.
Recommended Free Tools
Installations of this kind require a plan for readers, antennas, power, network access and maintenance. Metalwork, cabling routes and shielding can affect performance, so the technology supplier, millworker and electrical contractor should coordinate shop drawings before fabrication. Allow access panels and replacement paths; a concealed component that cannot be serviced turns a useful pilot into a recurring construction problem.
Digital mirrors and universal login
The same GQ feature cited a digital “magic mirror” and universal login. A mirror may let a shopper request another size, view coordinated products or contact an associate without leaving the fitting room. Universal login connects a store interaction to the customer’s digital account.
These services change the fitting-room specification. Provide reliable wireless coverage, outlets where equipment requires them, accessible mounting zones, glare-controlled lighting and a privacy strategy that does not depend on a device working perfectly. Staff need a visible exception process for customers who prefer a conventional fitting-room experience or decline account-based services.

Mobile payment and the connected journey
Mobile payment and linked online/offline services let a shopper browse in store, order an unavailable size, personalize an item and complete payment without repeating the entire transaction. The architecture must support that flow with dependable connectivity, charging capacity, secure point-of-sale locations and a back-of-house process for ship-from-store or collection orders.

The lesson for other categories is to design the digital layer at the same time as circulation and furniture. Beauty consultations, electronics comparisons, sports equipment fitting and home-product advice all need staff access to information without forcing the customer to restart the journey at a separate desk.
Events and hospitality give stores a reason to exist
A transaction can happen online; an event cannot. The event-focused Men’s Wearhouse format and GQ’s references to shop-in-shops and in-store exhibitions show how a store can host activities as well as sell products. Launches, tailoring appointments, demonstrations, talks and community gatherings create reasons to visit that are difficult to reproduce on a product page.
Event capability should be treated as infrastructure. Provide clear sightlines to a presentation area, flexible power and lighting, acoustic separation from fitting rooms, durable surfaces, storage for seating and a route for deliveries. Check fire egress, occupancy limits, accessibility and after-hours security before the first event is scheduled. A beautiful space that cannot be reset quickly or safely will not become a reliable program.
Hospitality without losing retail efficiency
Seating, refreshments, consultation tables and calmer lighting can make a store feel more like a service venue. They also consume area and increase cleaning, maintenance and staffing requirements. The right balance is a hospitality layer attached to a clear retail route, not a lounge that blocks circulation or reduces product visibility.

Bonobos’ rollout work, documented by Palma Design, emphasized giving each store its own personality while maintaining a shared design language. The work included facades, millwork, fabrication bidding, shop drawings and construction oversight. This illustrates a scalable portfolio method: standardize the parts that protect brand recognition and performance, then allow local variation in materials, graphics, artwork or event programming.
For multi-site construction, a kit-of-parts approach can reduce design time and procurement risk. Typical elements might include a base lighting layout, fitting-room module, cash-wrap infrastructure, signage family and data backbone. A local layer can then respond to building frontage, climate, historic fabric or neighborhood identity without turning every store into a one-off project.

What other retail categories can apply
1. Start with the customer task
- List the decisions customers are trying to make, such as choosing a size, comparing specifications, matching products or arranging delivery.
- Group products and services around those decisions, even when they cross traditional departments.
- Draw the route from entry to advice, trial, payment and collection before placing fixtures.
2. Build a flexible physical kit
- Separate permanent infrastructure—slabs, power, data, lighting and life-safety systems—from movable merchandising.
- Use demountable partitions and modular joinery where categories are likely to change.
- Reserve storage and staff circulation so service activity does not spill into customer aisles.
3. Design digital touchpoints with the fit-out
- Map every device to a power, network, mounting and maintenance requirement.
- Test wireless coverage, glare, acoustics and accessibility in the actual materials and room proportions.
- Define a non-digital fallback for payment, product lookup and fitting-room assistance.
4. Make programming operationally realistic
- Choose an event zone that can be isolated or reset without closing the whole store.
- Provide seating, storage, lighting control and delivery access sized for the intended program.
- Confirm occupancy, egress, accessibility, cleaning and security requirements with the operator and authorities.
Construction pitfalls that can undermine the model
- Overfitting the opening assortment: Fixed walls and tightly dimensioned displays become obsolete when casual categories or seasonal campaigns change.
- Adding technology after millwork is complete: Retrofits create visible cables, weak wireless coverage and inaccessible service points.
- Ignoring acoustic and privacy needs: Events and digital consultations can disrupt fitting rooms or confidential advice.
- Confusing visual openness with accessibility: Long sightlines are useful, but routes, seating, counters and fitting rooms must still meet applicable accessibility requirements.
- Under-sizing back-of-house space: Omnichannel orders, rental returns, alterations and event equipment need dedicated holding and processing areas.
- Standardizing away local identity: A repeatable kit should control performance and cost, not make every storefront indistinguishable.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The IADS figures establish the direction of menswear sales mix and online participation for the department stores covered in its 2025 averages; they do not predict results for every retailer or geography. The SEC filing documents concepts being tested by Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank, not a universal industry standard. British GQ’s examples demonstrate possible technology patterns, but they do not provide a comparable return-on-investment measure.
Historical examples can show lineage without proving current performance. Lululemon’s 2014 men-focused Soho concept is useful context for the longer development of men’s retail, but it should not be treated as evidence of today’s results. Felix del Toro, the company’s senior vice president of men’s, told TIME, “There hadn’t been the same amount of attention to who the guy was, who the guest we’re appealing to was.” The statement captures the shift toward designing around a clearly understood customer, not a current performance benchmark.

Whether a specific project succeeds still depends on its catchment, operating model, lease, staffing and execution.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this trend mean for a retail construction budget?
Budget for adaptable infrastructure—modular fixtures, spare power and data capacity, serviceable technology, storage and event capability—rather than treating the sales floor as the only investment. The right allowance depends on the operator’s systems and program.
Should every store install RFID racks or digital mirrors?
No. Select technology when it solves a documented customer or staff problem, then test connectivity, accessibility, privacy and maintenance requirements in the planned space. A robust non-digital fallback is essential.
How can a chain keep stores consistent without making them identical?
Standardize high-risk and high-cost elements such as lighting, fitting-room modules, data pathways and signage. Allow local variation in facade treatment, materials, graphics and programming within that kit of parts.
