How long do wool dryer balls last?
Maytag says wool dryer balls typically last about 1,000 laundry cycles. Whirlpool gives a similar estimate—up to five years or 1,000 loads—and notes that lifespan depends on the manufacturer. These are product-life claims, not a universal test result: actual durability varies by set and use.
Refreshing may help maintain performance, but available guidance does not establish a measured amount of extra life or promise that washing restores a worn ball to like-new condition.
How do you refresh wool dryer balls?
Check the care label or instructions first. Some manufacturers advise against machine washing; others permit it. For a set that can be washed, Maytag recommends this method:

- Wash on a gentle cycle with hot water. Do not add detergent or fabric softener.
- Dry on high heat or air-dry completely before putting the balls back in the dryer.
Maytag suggests refreshing about every 100 loads, every four to six months, or when performance seems to decline. Treat that as its suggested schedule, not a requirement for every brand.
When should you replace dryer balls?
A little surface lint does not necessarily mean the balls are finished; remove caught debris with a lint roller or fabric shaver. Consider replacing a set if the balls have shrunk significantly, are unraveling, or look substantially worn. Follow the manufacturer’s advice before attempting deeper cleaning.

Should you add essential oil to dryer balls?
No—not as a routine refresh or scenting step. Maytag warns that essential oils can increase flammability risk, particularly with wool dryer balls.
