A 35 Ah battery has no single inverter runtime: the answer depends on its voltage and chemistry, how much capacity you can use, the inverter’s losses and idle draw, and the appliance’s running and startup power. For a 12 V battery, a rough planning example—50% usable discharge and 90% inverter efficiency—delivers about 189 Wh to an AC load before idle draw and other losses. That is about 1 hour 53 minutes at 100 W, 38 minutes at 300 W, or 19 minutes at 600 W.
Estimate runtime from battery energy and load
Amp-hours measure electric charge, not energy. First multiply the battery’s amp-hour rating by its nominal voltage to estimate nominal watt-hours:

For a first estimate, apply the usable-discharge fraction and inverter efficiency, then divide by the AC load:
Runtime (hours) ≈ (nominal Wh × usable-discharge fraction × inverter efficiency) ÷ AC load (W)

For the 12 V example, using 50% usable discharge and 90% inverter efficiency gives 420 × 0.50 × 0.90 = 189 Wh for the AC load. Those percentages are illustrative planning assumptions used by The Camping and Caravanning Club, not guaranteed specifications for a particular battery or inverter. These are calculations, not measured results. They assume the 12 V battery, 50% usable discharge, and 90% efficiency above, and exclude inverter idle draw and battery capacity losses caused by high discharge rates.

Adjust the estimate for your equipment
Use the battery’s actual voltage, chemistry, and discharge limit
The usable-discharge fraction is not universal. The cited guides use 50% as a lead-acid planning example and discuss 80–90% as a planning range for LiFePO4 batteries, but the instructions for your specific battery take precedence. An 80% discharge assumption for the 12 V, 35 Ah example would provide about 302 Wh to the AC load at 90% inverter efficiency, before idle draw and rate-related losses. Account for inverter efficiency and idle draw
An inverter loses some energy while converting DC power to AC, and may consume power whenever it is switched on—even when an appliance draws little power or cycles off. Use the inverter manufacturer’s stated efficiency and tare or idle draw if available. When you know tare draw, include it as a battery-side load: estimated battery power is approximately AC load divided by inverter efficiency, plus tare watts. Allow for high discharge rates
A lead-acid battery may deliver less than its nameplate capacity when a heavy inverter load drains it quickly. Schneider Electric’s inverter manual gives an illustrative table showing usable capacity falling from 100% at C/20 to 70% at C/5 and 50% at C/2. These are examples in that manual, not universal values for every lead-acid battery. [Schneider Electric inverter manual, Section 7]
Check both running watts and startup demand
For equipment that cycles on and off, estimate runtime using its average power over time rather than assuming it draws its full rated running watts continuously. Motors and compressors can also require a brief startup surge. The Camping and Caravanning Club guide gives the general rule “Starting power = 2 to 6 x running power”; check the appliance and inverter specifications, because the actual startup demand varies. Consider cutoff, cables, temperature, and battery condition
Low-voltage cutoff, voltage drop in cables, temperature, and battery age or condition can shorten operation or cause an inverter to shut down before the simple estimate is reached. Cutoff behavior and thresholds vary by inverter model; Schneider Electric’s manual describes conditions for its own equipment, which should not be generalized to other models. - Battery: nominal voltage, chemistry, capacity rating, condition, and manufacturer-recommended usable discharge.
- Inverter: compatible DC input voltage, efficiency, idle or tare draw, continuous output rating, surge rating, and low-voltage cutoff.
- Appliance: average or running watts, how long it runs, and startup watts if it has a motor or compressor.
- Measurement: if the load is uncertain, measure AC consumption with a plug-in watt meter; use a suitable battery monitor for the DC side.
With those values, revise the energy estimate using the actual usable-discharge limit and inverter specifications, then treat the result as a planning figure rather than a guarantee. The exact battery, inverter, and appliance specifications determine the runtime for a real setup.
