What was built in Tapping
The Tapping Residence was delivered by Australian contractor Contec using a construction printer made by Dutch firm CyBe. The printer deposited a cement-based mix in successive layers to form the walls of both stories. The reported finished layout has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a garage and a small balcony, according to 3Dnatives and New Atlas.

The 18-hour milestone covers that robotic shell-printing work—not a complete, finished or ready-to-occupy home. After printing, builders installed the roof, wiring, flooring and other elements. New Atlas reports that the entire project took five months.
What the 18-hour figure tells you
It is a measure of one phase of construction: producing the basic wall shell on site. It shows that a contractor and printer supplier completed robotic printing of the wall structure for both stories in a residential project. It does not mean every part of the home was printed, or that a similar house can routinely be completed on the same schedule.

For context, printer manufacturer COBOD says printing the wall structure of a roughly 100 m² single-story home typically takes one to four days with a three-person crew. The company says other construction phases still follow a conventional timeline. That is COBOD’s general guidance, not a comparison with the Contec and CyBe project: COBOD’s housing and residential FAQ.
Material and cost claims, with limits
New Atlas relayed Contec’s description of its specialized cement-based printing mix. The company said it sets in under three minutes and reaches 50 MPa in compressive strength. Those are company-reported figures; the report did not provide independent test data for the mix.

Contec also told New Atlas that the Tapping project cost 22% less than a comparable local masonry home. The report did not disclose an exact project price or an independent cost audit. Treat the figure as a company-reported comparison for this project, not a general estimate of savings from 3D-printed construction.
The available project reporting does not establish the home’s specific building approvals, code pathway or independent structural validation. It also does not substantiate broader performance claims about cyclone resistance, thermal efficiency, fire or water resistance, or termite protection beyond the company’s statements.

What this project demonstrates—and what it does not
The Tapping Residence is an example of construction-scale printing being used for a defined part of a house: its wall structure. The workflow combined robotic printing with conventional work to complete the residence. The 18-hour figure is meaningful as a shell-printing milestone, but it cannot stand in for the whole build schedule.
Nor does one project establish that the reported cost reduction applies to other designs or locations, or that all printed homes use the same material or have the same performance. Any comparison with another project needs to account for what was printed, the printer system, crew, material and whether the stated time includes finishing.
