A couch commonly lasts about 7 to 15 years, but that range is only a planning estimate. Construction quality, daily use, household conditions and maintenance can move an individual sofa well below or above it. The practical question is not its age alone: determine whether the frame and support are stable, whether it still feels comfortable and hygienic, and whether the worn components can be repaired.
A sagging cushion does not automatically mean the entire couch has reached the end of its life. Padding, webbing, upholstery and some frame parts can be repaired separately. Replacement makes more sense when the structure is unsafe or unstable, support cannot be restored, or the sofa no longer suits the way your household uses it.

What the published 7–15-year estimate really means
Wayfair describes an average sofa lifespan of 7–15 years. The page does not state a publication date, and the figure is a retailer-published estimate rather than a population study. Livingetc quotes interior designer Christiane Lemieux, founder of Lemieux et Cie, saying a well-constructed sofa with a solid wood frame and high-quality craftsmanship can last 7–15 years or longer with proper care. That commentary was published about 2024, although the exact date is not stated in the available material.
These figures are useful for planning, budgeting and comparing expectations when buying furniture. They are not a countdown, a safety limit or a guarantee. Two couches of the same age can be in completely different condition because one may receive light, occasional use while another carries several hours of daily sitting, children, pets or frequent overnight sleeping. Materials, joinery, suspension, cushion filling, cleaning and the environment all affect the result.

Use the estimate as a prompt to inspect the couch, not as the reason to discard it. A stable, comfortable 12-year-old sofa may be a better candidate for continued use than an unstable five-year-old one.
Understand which part is failing
A sofa is an assembly of components rather than one indivisible object. A U.S. government furniture-repair manual identifies the frame, webbing, padding and cover as separate parts, with different repair methods for each. Identifying the failed part prevents an unnecessary full replacement.
Frame
The frame carries the load and keeps the arms, back and seat aligned. Look for movement where a rail meets a corner, cracked wood, a split joint, a distorted arm or a back that shifts when you push it. A creak alone is not proof of catastrophic damage, but movement that persists after the sofa is unloaded deserves an inspection by a qualified furniture repairer.

Webbing, springs or another support system hold the seat above the frame. If a seat drops sharply, bottoms out or feels uneven even after the cushion is repositioned, the support underneath may have stretched, detached or failed. The repair manual lists replacing or refastening webbing as a possible repair. New filling cannot compensate for a support system that no longer carries weight.

Padding and cushion filling
Foam, fiber or other padding compresses with use. Flattening, a permanent hollow or an uneven cushion can often be addressed by replacing or redistributing padding. Removable replacement foam inserts are an option only when their dimensions, density and shape match the existing cover and the frame and suspension remain serviceable.
Cover and upholstery
Fabric or leather can stain, tear, fray or lose its tension while the structure underneath remains sound. A removable cover may be cleaned or replaced; fixed upholstery can sometimes be repaired or renewed by an upholsterer. Hygiene matters as much as appearance: persistent odor, mold or contamination that cannot be safely removed is a reason to stop using the couch, regardless of its age.
When keeping the couch is sensible
Continue using it when all of the following are true:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- The frame and joints remain stable, with no dangerous movement or exposed broken structure.
- The seat support does not collapse or bottom out under normal use.
- The couch provides adequate support for the people and activities it is intended to serve.
- Surface wear can be cleaned or is acceptable for the room.
- There is no unresolved moisture, mold, pest or other hygiene problem.
Do not replace a sofa solely because it has reached seven, ten or fifteen years. Published ranges are approximate, and condition is the stronger evidence.

When repair or refreshing is the better choice
Repair is appropriate when the main defect is localized and the underlying structure is worth preserving. Ask a repairer for a written, itemized assessment rather than accepting a diagnosis based only on a sagging cushion.
Cushion work
Measure the existing insert and the inside of its cover, and identify whether the cushion is a single slab, a wrapped foam core, loose fiber or a combination. A replacement insert that is too thick can distort the cover and stress seams; one that is too thin will not restore support. Confirm the seat platform and webbing are sound before ordering material.
Webbing and spring repairs
Loose or broken webbing can sometimes be replaced or refastened. Springs and their attachment points may also be serviceable, depending on the design and the extent of damage. The repairer should explain what will be opened, replaced and re-secured, and whether the repaired support will be compatible with the existing frame.

Frame and joint repairs
Some loose joints, rails or corner blocks can be repaired or replaced. A repair is less attractive when the frame is broadly cracked, warped, water-damaged or unstable in several locations. Ask whether the proposed work restores load-bearing strength or merely masks movement.

Upholstery
Reupholstery can make sense when the frame and suspension are robust and the sofa has a useful size, shape or sentimental value. Obtain a written estimate that separates labor, fabric, foam, webbing and any frame work so it can be compared fairly with a replacement.
A practical inspection you can complete before deciding
- Clear the sofa. Remove cushions, throws and objects so you can see seams, frame edges and the seat platform.
- Check for movement. Push each arm and the back, then gently rock the base. Stop if you hear cracking or see a joint separating. Do not continue using a sofa that shifts dangerously.
- Inspect visible structure. Look underneath for cracked rails, broken corner blocks, water damage or exposed sharp hardware. Use a flashlight rather than dismantling the frame yourself.
- Test the suspension. With cushions removed, press several points across the seat deck. Compare the center with the front and sides; a deep, localized drop can indicate failed webbing or springs.
- Evaluate each cushion. Reinsert cushions in their original positions, sit in the usual places and note whether they recover shape after being unloaded. Record which cushions are affected rather than labeling the whole couch a failure.
- Assess comfort and support. Sit in the positions used most often. Consider posture, pressure points, seat height and whether the couch still works for reading, conversation, television or sleeping.
- Check the covering and hygiene. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, look for tears and inspect for persistent odor, dampness, mold or contamination that cleaning cannot resolve.
- Document the findings. Photograph defects and write down dimensions, model information, purchase date and warranty terms before requesting repair estimates or replacement quotes.
When replacement is the responsible choice
Replacement becomes compelling when the frame is structurally damaged or unstable, the support system cannot be restored reliably, or several major systems have failed at once. A couch that rocks, has a cracked load-bearing rail, exposes hazardous hardware or collapses under ordinary sitting should not remain in service while you wait for a cosmetic fix.
Replace it as well when the sofa no longer meets the household’s functional needs: for example, it may be too small for the room, provide inadequate support for the people using it, or have a hygiene problem that cannot be safely corrected. Those are use and safety decisions, not age-based rules.
If the couch appears repairable, compare an itemized repair estimate with the price of a replacement that provides equivalent capacity, dimensions, comfort and construction. The available evidence does not support a universal “repair when it costs less than X percent” rule. A lower-priced repair may have little value if the underlying frame is failing; a substantial repair may be reasonable for a well-built frame that would otherwise be difficult to replace.

How warranty terms fit into the decision
Warranty length is product-specific and does not establish how long every sofa should last. IKEA’s U.S. terms, for example, describe a 10-year limited warranty for many seating products and 25 years for some products. The terms cover specified defects in materials and workmanship in frames and seat and back cushions, for residential use and under the conditions stated for the exact product.
The official wording says: “This limited warranty applies to residential use only and covers defects in material and workmanship in frames and seat and back cushions when used with the intended frames.” Before seeking service, verify the model, purchase date, region, proof of purchase, intended use and exclusions. Normal wear, accidental damage, improper cleaning or commercial use may be treated differently from a manufacturing defect. A warranty claim can affect the repair-versus-replace calculation, but it should not be treated as evidence that the sofa will last for the full warranty term.
Care practices that can extend useful life
- Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning codes and drying instructions; an unsuitable cleaner can damage fabric, finish or adhesives.
- Use cushions in their intended positions and rotate or fluff them only when the design permits it. Do not force a cushion into a cover with incompatible dimensions.
- Keep the frame and upholstery dry, and address spills or leaks promptly to reduce the chance of lasting odor or moisture damage.
- Avoid standing on the seats or arms and avoid loads beyond the furniture’s intended residential use.
- Inspect joints, webbing, legs and cushion seams periodically so a small repair does not become a structural failure.
- Keep records of the model, purchase date, care instructions and repairs; they make warranty and repair conversations more precise.
A decision framework at a glance
| What you find | Most appropriate next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stable frame and support; acceptable comfort and hygiene | Keep using and maintain it | Age alone is not a reason to replace a sound couch |
| Sound structure with flattened or uneven cushions | Investigate padding or replacement inserts | Localized padding wear can be repaired without replacing the frame |
| Sound frame with failed webbing, springs or upholstery | Obtain a qualified repair or reupholstery estimate | Support and covering are separable components |
| Cracked, warped or unstable frame; dangerous movement | Stop using it and plan replacement or major structural repair | Cosmetic work or new filling cannot make an unsafe frame sound |
| Multiple failures or an unfixable hygiene problem | Replace the couch | The combined work or unresolved contamination may outweigh its usefulness |
The best replacement date is therefore the point at which the couch can no longer provide safe, hygienic, appropriately supportive service—or cannot be restored at a sensible cost—not an arbitrary birthday. Treat 7–15 years as a planning range, inspect the structure first, and let the condition of the individual sofa guide the decision.
