Two longer terms also apply to specific components: five years of parts and labor for the sealed refrigeration system, and ten years of parts plus five years of labor for a digital inverter compressor. Those figures come from Samsung Electronics America, Inc.’s U.S. refrigerator warranty page, which says coverage varies by model. The rest of this article explains what each term covers, who qualifies, and how to confirm the terms for your own refrigerator.
Coverage periods at a glance
The three headline periods cover different parts of the appliance, so a single “how long” answer is misleading. The table below separates them by component and by whether parts or labor is covered.

What the longer terms do and do not mean
A ten-year figure sounds like a ten-year warranty on the refrigerator, but it applies only to the digital inverter compressor, and only to its parts. Labor on that compressor is covered for five years. After year five, a failed compressor may still be covered for the part itself, but the labor to install it would be the owner’s cost under the published terms.
The five-year sealed-system term is the more useful number for most owners. It covers parts and labor for the components that make up the cooling circuit, which is where the costliest refrigerator failures tend to occur. Check your manual to see which components your model lists under the sealed system, because the named list in the U.S. PDF is the reference point, not a general description of every refrigerator part.

Samsung’s U.S. refrigerator page summarizes the program in one line: “Most Samsung refrigerators include a standard 1-year manufacturer’s warranty, plus extended coverage of up to 10 years for parts and labor.” That sentence blends the terms. Ten years is a parts-only figure for the inverter compressor, and no component is listed as covered for ten years of parts and labor combined. When you quote the page, use the component-specific terms rather than the summary line.
Who qualifies and when coverage starts
Standard coverage begins automatically on the purchase date. You do not need to register the appliance to activate the baseline warranty. Registration may unlock additional benefits or support, but it is not the trigger for the coverage described above.

- The claimant is the original consumer purchaser.
- You have proof of purchase, such as a dated receipt.
- The product was purchased and used in the United States.
- The refrigerator was installed, operated, and maintained according to the product instructions.
- The problem is a manufacturing defect in materials or workmanship.
The last two conditions are where claims most often run into trouble. A refrigerator that was installed on an unlevel floor, blocked at the vents, or run without the recommended clearance may be denied even within the coverage period. Exclusions are set out in the full warranty document and the owner’s manual, not in the summary pages, so read those before assuming a symptom is covered.

Samsung’s U.S. general warranty page has, at times, offered an extra year of coverage on eligible purchases. These offers have defined purchase dates, limits on participating retailers, and a required claim process. A promotion can change the practical coverage for a buyer who qualifies, but it is not a standard term, and it is not guaranteed to be running at any given time. Confirm the purchase window, eligible model, retailer, and redemption steps on Samsung’s page before you assume an extension applies.

The published periods are the starting point. Your exact model and purchase determine what applies.

- Find the full model number. It is printed on a label inside the fresh-food or freezer compartment, and it also appears on your receipt.
- Locate your proof of purchase and note the purchase date, the retailer, and the country where the appliance was bought and used.
- Open Samsung’s U.S. refrigerator warranty page, or the warranty section of the user manual for your model, and find the terms for the model number.
- Match your symptom to a component. A failed compressor falls under the compressor term. A leak or cooling failure in the sealed circuit falls under the sealed-system term. Anything else falls under the whole-appliance term.
- If your purchase date falls within a promotion window, check whether the promotion applies and whether you need to complete a separate claim step.
- Contact Samsung support with the model number and receipt before you buy a replacement part or hire a repair. A claim that is filed late or without documents can be harder to resolve than one filed early.
Outside the United States
Every figure above applies to refrigerators bought and used in the United States. Samsung publishes different warranty terms for other countries, and the periods, labor coverage, and eligibility rules can differ. If you bought the appliance abroad or are moving it, use the warranty for the country where it is used.
Paid protection plans
Some retailers and third parties sell extended protection plans for appliances. These are separate from Samsung’s included limited warranty. Before buying one, compare the plan’s coverage length, whether it covers parts, labor, or both, what it excludes, what it costs, and who is eligible. A plan that overlaps with the manufacturer’s sealed-system or compressor terms may add little, while a plan that covers the whole appliance past one year may be worth the cost for some owners. The decision depends on your model, your purchase price, and how long you plan to keep the refrigerator.
