How Long Does a Propane Tank Last? Runtime, Estimates and Safety Tips

A 20 lb propane tank may run a mid-sized grill for about 15 hours, but actual runtime depends on fuel quantity, appliance demand, settings and use. Here’s how to estimate your own and handle cylinders safely.

A standard 20 lb propane tank lasts about 15 hours on a mid-sized gas grill, according to AmeriGas. That is an estimate, not a guarantee: the appliance’s fuel demand, heat setting, temperature, how often it runs and the amount of propane in the cylinder all affect runtime. For comparison, the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) says a 20 lb tank can run a portable patio heater for up to 10 hours.

Typical runtime for common propane appliances

Runtime depends on what the appliance is and how it is operated. These figures are examples from U.S. consumer guidance, not promises for every model or condition.

Appliance and fuel amount Published runtime example How to interpret it
Standard mid-sized gas grill, 20 lb tank About 15 hours AmeriGas’s estimate; temperature, grill size, energy demand and usage affect consumption. AmeriGas grill tank guidance
Portable patio heater, one 20 lb tank Up to 10 hours PERC’s general example; actual time varies by heater and setting. PERC patio heater guidance

These examples should not be applied to generators, RV appliances or other equipment without checking their fuel inputs. An appliance that runs intermittently may use the same total operating hours over a longer calendar period than one used continuously.

Why the same tank can last different lengths of time

  • Appliance demand: appliances consume propane at different rates. A higher fuel input generally means less operating time from the same fuel quantity.
  • Heat setting and use: running at a high setting or operating for longer periods uses more fuel than lower or intermittent use.
  • Temperature and conditions: AmeriGas identifies temperature, grill size, appliance energy demand and usage demand as factors in grill-tank consumption.
  • Fuel actually in the cylinder: a tank’s familiar size label does not always tell you how much propane an exchanged cylinder contains.

Check the propane amount, not just the tank label

AmeriGas says its grill-tank exchange cylinders contain 15 lb net propane, although they are commonly called 20 lb tanks. That is less fuel than a full 20 lb load, so an exchange cylinder may provide less runtime than an estimate that assumes 20 lb of propane. Check the supplier’s stated net fill when comparing runtime expectations.

Estimate runtime for your own appliance

  1. Find the appliance’s input rating. Check the appliance nameplate or the manufacturer’s catalog for its propane input in BTU per hour. PERC’s Technical Pocket Guide identifies those as the places to find appliance input when determining load.
  2. Confirm the fuel amount. Use the cylinder’s stated net propane quantity rather than assuming the label means it is filled with that many pounds of fuel.
  3. Account for how you operate it. Note the settings and approximate hours of actual operation. A single runtime figure cannot reflect every appliance, setting and use pattern.
  4. Use the result as a planning estimate. The available examples—about 15 hours for a mid-sized grill and up to 10 hours for a portable patio heater—are appliance-specific guidance, not a universal calculator.

A compatible fuel gauge can help monitor a small cylinder; AmeriGas mentions this approach in its RV refill guidance. Check that a gauge is suitable for your cylinder before relying on it.

Fuel runtime is not the cylinder’s service life

“How long does a tank last?” can also mean how long the cylinder remains eligible for use. That is separate from how many operating hours its propane supplies. PHMSA’s Is Your Propane Cylinder Safe? explains how to check manufacturing and requalification markings. Use the cylinder markings and ask a qualified propane retailer for date-specific service guidance; requirements can depend on the cylinder and applicable rules.

Portable propane cylinder safety

Storage and handling

  • Keep portable cylinders outdoors. PERC says not to use or store them in enclosed spaces such as basements, garages, sheds or tents.
  • Keep cylinders away from heat and ignition sources, and do not leave them in a vehicle.
  • Do not repair or modify a cylinder yourself.

If you suspect a leak

  1. Do not smoke, vape or use an open flame. Avoid other ignition sources.
  2. If there is no flame or visible propane cloud at the cylinder, close the valve if you can do so safely, leave the area and call 911 or the fire department.
  3. Have a qualified professional inspect the cylinder and appliance before using them again.

These precautions follow PERC’s Safety Guide for Portable Propane Cylinders. If a flame or visible propane cloud is present, do not approach the cylinder to operate its valve.
