Back to Nature is a community garden beside the service center in Xialiang Community, Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China. A South China Agricultural University team led by faculty advisor Hui Tang converted a neglected wasteland into a child-focused public garden where planting, wildlife observation, water management, sensory exploration and community events happen in one small setting.

The project matters because its “nature connection” is built through repeated participation rather than a decorative landscape alone. Children and families helped choose crops, joined design workshops and build days, attended nature classes and shared care of the completed garden with the community service center. The project won a 2021 ASLA Student Community Service Honor Award, but its reported volunteer and activity figures are project outputs, not independent proof of lasting health or learning effects.

What the Back to Nature garden is

The full project title is Back to Nature: An Urban Garden that Reconnects Children to Nature and Enhances the Wellbeing of the Community. It was developed for an older, dense urban neighborhood in Guangzhou where the community service center identified a neglected piece of land and wanted a public garden with children as the main users.

Preparation began in April 2019. The garden formally opened in January 2021. Eighteen landscape-architecture students from South China Agricultural University worked with Hui Tang, residents, the community service center and outside social organizations. The design joined physical construction with a social process: residents discussed the proposal, helped shape it, participated in construction and then took on regular management.

Hui Tang described the approach as transforming “wasteland in the community into a natural garden for children and residents to interact with nature through shared activities.” That sentence captures the project’s central distinction. The garden is not simply a play area with plants; it is a shared learning and maintenance system embedded in daily neighborhood life.

Why the Guangzhou setting shaped the design

The project team’s preliminary social survey, as reported in the 2021 ASLA award account, found that more than 35% of the community population was under 18. That figure helped justify making children the principal users, while the site’s limited public space made the garden useful to adults as well.

Instead of separating a children’s zone from a conventional ornamental landscape, the project distributed opportunities for observation, cultivation and gathering throughout the site. A family can grow vegetables, look for birds and insects, follow a tactile path, attend a class and join a community event without leaving the garden. The arrangement also gives neighbors practical reasons to meet: they must decide what to plant, how to use collected water, when to prune and how to share the planting boxes.

What was built: a connected set of garden systems

The ASLA project account identifies several elements that work together. The dimensions and quantities below are the figures reported for this Guangzhou project, not a universal specification for every urban garden.

Element Documented provision How it supports children’s learning or community use
Edible planting Ten planting boxes, each 1 m × 1 m Community families selected crops, learned gardening techniques and cared for food plants.
Insect habitat An insect hotel Provides a visible place to discuss insects and habitat needs.
Bird habitat A birdwatching garden Planting attracts birds while observation is separated from active play.
Rainwater system Roof-fed collection with filtration and storage Collected water was used for roof and vertical greening; excess was directed to a pond.
Ecological pond A pond described as self-purifying through aquatic plants Offers opportunities to observe aquatic plants and amphibians.
Sensory planting Colorful, aromatic and medicinal plants Creates visual, olfactory and cultural entry points for lessons.
Exploration paths Paths using different natural materials Allows tactile comparison underfoot and slows movement for observation.
Garden cabin and theatre A five-square-meter cabin Displays activity and nature-education information and serves as a stage for community events.

Family planting boxes

The ten 1 m × 1 m boxes are the most direct bridge between food and education. Families could choose what to grow instead of receiving a fixed demonstration plot. That choice makes crop selection, seasonal care, watering and harvest part of the learning process. It also creates a manageable unit of responsibility: a family can recognize its box, see changes from week to week and share decisions with neighbors.

For a new project, the useful lesson is not to copy the number ten automatically. Size and quantity should follow the number of participating households, available sun, accessible paths and the capacity of a named steward to coordinate watering and renewal. The Guangzhou account does not state construction cost, soil depth, crop list or irrigation rates, so those details must be designed locally.

Habitat and observation areas

The insect hotel and birdwatching garden make small wildlife visible in a dense neighborhood. The account specifically notes that habitat planting and observation were separated from active play areas. That separation is a practical safety and stewardship decision: children can watch without trampling habitat, and adults can maintain planting without working in the busiest circulation route.

Signs or observation points can turn an incidental sighting into a lesson. The project used information at observation points, seasonal planting posters and horticulture pamphlets. A similar garden should place readable explanations where children naturally pause, rather than relying on a remote noticeboard that visitors never approach.

Rainwater, greening and the pond

Roof runoff was collected, filtered and stored. The project account says the water was used for roof and vertical greening, with excess directed to a pond. Aquatic plants were described as supporting the pond’s self-purifying function, and the pond became a place to observe aquatic plants and amphibians.

“Self-purifying” should not be read as permission to ignore maintenance or water-quality checks. The award narrative does not publish engineering calculations, storage volume, treatment performance or monitoring results. In a new build, designers need to document catchment area, first-flush arrangements, filtration, overflow routing, mosquito management, child-safe edges and a maintenance schedule. Those are implementation requirements, not measurements reported for the Guangzhou site.

Sensory routes and the cabin

Colorful, aromatic and medicinal plants provide several ways into nature for children who may not yet know plant names. Paths made from different natural materials add a tactile dimension. The small five-square-meter cabin gives the garden a compact indoor-outdoor teaching point: it displayed activity and nature-education information and also functioned as a stage for community activities.

A cabin of this size cannot replace a classroom, so its value comes from flexibility. It can hold pamphlets, display seasonal work, shelter a short explanation or frame a performance. Keeping the stage and information function together helps the garden host both structured classes and informal neighborhood gatherings.

How residents helped make and run it

The social process unfolded in defined stages rather than as a single volunteer day.

  1. Preparation, April 2019: the community service center commissioned project preparation.
  2. Partners and resources, from June: social organizations were invited to contribute funding and materials.
  3. Resident discussion, July: the residents’ committee discussed construction.
  4. Design and construction, August through December: residents joined design workshops and community build days.
  5. Opening and shared management, January 2021: the completed garden entered use, with the center and residents jointly managing it.

The project account reports eight cooperative units and more than 400 community volunteers across eight joint-build activities over four months. It also says residents formed a volunteer team for regular care and pruning. These are figures reported by the project team through the ASLA award account; they are not independently audited participation data.

For construction managers, this sequence illustrates why resident involvement must be scheduled, not merely invited. A workshop before the layout is fixed can influence paths and planting. A build day after materials arrive can create ownership. A post-opening roster assigns the less glamorous work—watering, pruning, cleaning and reporting damage—that determines whether the garden remains usable.

How nature education was embedded in ordinary use

Education was integrated into the garden rather than delivered only in a separate program room. Seasonal planting posters and horticulture pamphlets explained what was happening in the beds. Observation points carried information about the living systems nearby. Regular classes covered botany, ecology, environmental issues and land ethics.

The project also connected plants to making. Residents and social workers used garden plants to produce items such as mugwort and mint mosquito-repellent ointment and aromatic products. The project account reports five kinds of garden farm product and three nature-education guide manuals. It reports one nature-education activity per month after completion.

The ASLA jury wrote that the program “encourages children to help build the greenspace framework and use ingredients from nature to create products.” The important design principle is the chain from living material to shared activity: children see a plant, learn its properties, help care for it and then understand one possible use. Any product-making activity should still include age-appropriate supervision, allergy awareness and clear rules about what may be handled or consumed; the award account does not provide those operating protocols.

What the project demonstrates—and what it does not prove

The award narrative presents the garden as supporting physical and mental health, environmental awareness and community cohesion. Those are stated aims and reported benefits of the project. The account does not provide an independent evaluation, a before-and-after study, attendance records verified by a third party or measured changes in health, learning or social cohesion.

That distinction matters when applying the idea elsewhere. The Guangzhou garden offers a documented model of integrating edible beds, habitat, water, sensory routes, teaching materials and resident stewardship. It does not establish that a particular number of boxes will improve wellbeing, that monthly classes will produce a defined learning gain or that volunteer participation will remain constant over time.

How to adapt the model to another urban site

A construction or landscape team considering a similar conversion can use the following decision sequence. These are practical planning steps derived from the documented components, not claims about results measured in Guangzhou.

  1. Map the existing constraints. Record sun, drainage, roof catchments, utilities, access routes, overlooked edges and places where active play could conflict with habitat.
  2. Name the primary users. Decide whether children are the main users, as in Xialiang Community, or whether the garden must balance several age groups. Identify households, schools, social workers and resident organizations that can participate.
  3. Choose a manageable edible system. Set the number and size of planting boxes according to participants and maintenance capacity. Publish crop-selection rules and a watering responsibility before installation.
  4. Separate observation from high-intensity movement. Locate bird and insect features where children can watch safely without trampling planting or entering maintenance work zones.
  5. Engineer water before adding features. Trace roof runoff, specify filtration and storage, design overflow to the pond or another lawful outlet, and establish inspection points. Do not treat a pond as maintenance-free.
  6. Build sensory access into circulation. Combine color, scent, texture and readable signs. Keep paths accessible and avoid creating a tactile feature that becomes slippery, sharp or difficult to repair.
  7. Provide a small teaching anchor. A cabin, shelter or display wall can hold seasonal information and support events, but its size should match the program rather than being presented as a full classroom.
  8. Schedule participation in phases. Hold resident discussions before final design, workshops during detailing, build days when work is safe and supervised, and a post-opening handover for care.
  9. Assign a local steward. Put the community service center, residents’ committee or another named body in charge of watering, pruning, safety checks, materials and activity scheduling.
  10. Track use honestly. Count activities and volunteers if useful, but distinguish those outputs from outcomes such as learning or wellbeing unless an independent evaluation measures them.

Questions to ask when comparing another garden with Back to Nature

Because the source describes one project rather than competing alternatives, it cannot rank gardens. The following comparison questions help a client or community judge whether another proposal has the same kind of integrated approach.

Decision area Question to ask Evidence to request before construction
Purpose Is the garden primarily for child-focused learning, general recreation or both? A user brief showing how activities and spaces serve the stated audience.
Participation Will residents shape design and maintenance, or only attend after completion? A workshop calendar, build plan and named management roles.
Food and sensory access Are edible beds, scent, color and tactile routes included as usable experiences? Planting plans, accessible circulation details and a care schedule.
Habitat and water Do wildlife features and water systems have safe locations and technical upkeep? Drainage, filtration, overflow, habitat-maintenance and inspection plans.
Programming Who will deliver classes, displays and seasonal activities after opening? A calendar, budget and responsible organization.
Stewardship Who owns daily decisions when enthusiasm declines? A written handover and volunteer or staff rota.

Limits, risks and maintenance realities

  • Volunteer fatigue: A large build-day turnout does not guarantee long-term care. Pair volunteer roles with a responsible institution and simple recurring tasks.
  • Water safety: Any pond or stored rainwater requires edge, overflow, hygiene and inspection decisions appropriate to local regulations and child use.
  • Habitat conflict: Wildlife areas can be damaged by informal play unless circulation and signs make the boundary legible.
  • Seasonal gaps: Planting and classes need a calendar so the garden remains educational outside the most attractive growing period.
  • Evidence inflation: Reported volunteer counts, product totals and monthly activities describe delivery, not proven causal effects on health or learning.
  • Unstated costs: The Guangzhou project account does not publish a construction budget, operating cost, material schedule or commercial planter specification. Any estimate for a new site must be developed from local quantities, labor, drainage and safety requirements.

The practical lesson from Guangzhou

Back to Nature succeeds as a project concept because its physical pieces reinforce one another. The planting boxes create responsibility, habitat features create observation, the rainwater system makes a resource cycle visible, sensory paths slow children down, and the cabin gives classes and community events a home. Resident workshops, joint construction and shared management connect those features to the people who must keep them working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a construction team, the transferable lesson is to design the stewardship system at the same time as the site. A garden can be attractive on opening day and still fail if nobody controls watering, pruning, safety checks, teaching materials or future decisions. Guangzhou’s documented process places those responsibilities in the project’s center, while remaining candid about what has and has not been independently measured.
