1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can earn continuing-education credit through events, online learning, college coursework, credentials, speaking, publishing, approved service, and structured self-study. The deciding issue is not whether an activity sounds educational; it is whether the board or certifying association governing your particular construction license or credential accepts that activity, in that format, for the credit type you need. Confirm the rule before you pay, attend, or submit a completion record.
Construction professionals may encounter CEUs, contact hours, professional development hours (PDHs), professional development credits (PDCs), and similar labels. Those terms are not automatically interchangeable. A state contractor license, an engineering or architecture license, a safety credential, and an association certification can each set different definitions, caps, approval requirements, and renewal periods.

The eight routes below are practical ways people commonly earn credit. The examples come from official guidance from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Court Reporters Association (NCRA), American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They illustrate how approval systems work; they do not create a universal entitlement for every construction occupation or jurisdiction.
Start by identifying the exact credit your credential requires
Before choosing a course or conference, write down four details: the authority that renews your license or certification, the renewal deadline, the required credit label, and the rules for approved providers or activities. A provider may advertise a certificate while your board requires a specific number of contact hours, PDHs, or another unit.

CEU, contact hour, and PDC are not universal conversions
NSCA defines a CEU as the way it measures continuing education and says awards are most often based on clock or contact hours. Its current overview gives examples of 5 contact hours equaling 0.5 CEU and 20 contact hours equaling 2.0 CEUs. Those examples describe NSCA’s system, not a conversion rule for construction licenses generally.
NCRA uses a different distinction: its guidance says, “CEUs are awarded for class time,” while other recognized activities receive PDCs. A speaking engagement, article test, or volunteer role may therefore produce a different credit category from a classroom course, even when both require professional effort.
Approval is a separate question from attendance
ASHA limits its CEUs to courses from ASHA Approved CE Providers. NCRA tells members to seek an eligibility determination for activities outside its events, approved events, or pre-qualified opportunities. Similar pre-approval or provider rules may apply to your construction credential. A completion certificate alone does not prove that your licensing authority will count the activity.

Eight ways to earn continuing-education credit
1. Attend a conference, clinic, seminar, or workshop
Live events are often the most efficient way to collect several hours while learning from multiple instructors. CDC lists courses, conferences, workshops, and webcasts among live continuing-education formats. NSCA accepts relevant live attendance under its Category A rules.
NSCA’s 2024–2026 certification handbook provides a precise example: eligible live attendance earns 0.1 CEU per hour, with a maximum of 2.0 CEUs per event. An eight-hour clinic would therefore be worth 0.8 CEU under those NSCA rules. The handbook also says live attendance does not need pre-approval, while recorded webinars do; do not transfer that distinction to another board without checking its policy.
For a construction event, retain the registration receipt, dated agenda, attendance verification, session list, and completion certificate. If the event offers parallel tracks, record only sessions you actually attended and that fit your credential’s subject requirements.
2. Take a live or on-demand webinar or online course
Online learning can remove travel and scheduling barriers. NCRA recognizes live and on-demand webinars, and CDC recognizes e-learning and recorded webinars as enduring formats. A live webcast may have attendance checks, while an on-demand course may require a quiz, time threshold, or final evaluation.

Do not assume that an online label makes a course acceptable. Check the exact provider, course title, hours, subject area, delivery format, and approval number against your credential’s rules. Keep the syllabus, learning objectives, completion record, quiz result, and any attendance log.
CDC states that learners can access credits, units, and contact hours at no cost for CDC-accredited activities. That statement applies to CDC activities; it does not make unrelated online courses free or automatically acceptable to a construction board.
Commercial libraries illustrate why verification matters. Continued.com advertises 12 months of course-library access, live and recorded webinars, audio and text formats, and completion certificates. Its subscription term and catalog can change, and a certificate does not establish that a particular construction license will accept a course. Confirm approval before subscribing.
3. Complete eligible college or university coursework
A post-certification class can provide substantial learning when it directly relates to your professional scope. NSCA describes credit for related college courses completed with a qualifying grade. NCRA requires an eligible topic area and supporting grade records or a transcript plus the course syllabus.

For construction professionals, a board might distinguish between a technical course tied to your license and an unrelated elective. Never submit an entire academic term without checking which subjects, grades, contact hours, and enrollment dates qualify. Request an official transcript early if the renewal portal requires one, and retain the syllabus showing content and instructional time.
4. Earn another recognized certification or complete eligible professional training
Additional credentials can satisfy a professional-development requirement when the governing body names them as eligible. NSCA awards credit for certain additional NSCA or NCCA-accredited credentials under stated conditions. NCRA includes certification testing and CPR or first-aid training, each subject to its own eligibility rules and limits.
NCRA’s guidance gives two useful figures: eligible adult-education classes earn 0.1 CEU per hour, and eligible CPR or first-aid courses earn 0.1 CEU per hour up to a 0.4-CEU cap. CPR and first-aid credit can be received only once in each three-year term under that guidance. These rates and caps are NCRA-specific; your license may classify safety training as a different unit or exclude it.

Before enrolling, ask the credentialing authority whether the new certification is recognized, whether an exam-only route qualifies, and whether the credit is limited to the cycle in which you earned it. Save the credential number, issue date, score or pass notice, provider accreditation, and course outline.
5. Present or speak at a professional event
Teaching peers can be a valid professional-development activity when the credential rules expressly include it. NSCA places speaking or serving as a panelist under its “Share Your Expertise” category and applies a cap in its certification handbook.
Because the cap and documentation requirements are credential-specific, obtain written confirmation before counting preparation time, repeated presentations, or panel participation. Keep the event program naming you as a speaker, invitation or acceptance email, presentation title, learning objectives, dates, and an organizer letter confirming your role and duration.
Do not assume ordinary academic teaching qualifies. NSCA’s handbook specifically says academic teaching does not qualify under its rules. A construction instructor should therefore distinguish a one-time professional conference presentation from routine teaching duties and submit only what the applicable policy permits.
6. Publish professional or educational work
Writing can count when it contributes documented professional knowledge. NSCA lists published works for which the certificant is an author or co-author, subject to its cycle and documentation rules. CDC also identifies journal articles as an enduring continuing-education format for activities it accredits; that is a separate CDC context, not a blanket rule that any article earns a license credit.
Keep the final publication, title page, publication date, author list, publisher information, and a description of how the work relates to your credential. Ask whether trade-magazine articles, technical manuals, peer-reviewed papers, and co-authored pieces are treated differently. Do not claim credit for an unpublished draft unless the governing authority explicitly allows it.
7. Volunteer in an eligible professional role
Volunteer service may qualify when it is tied to a defined professional association, committee, or standards activity. NSCA lists specific association and committee roles and its handbook specifies service periods and credit values.

General community volunteering is not automatically professional education. Before counting service, obtain the role’s eligibility criteria, minimum service period, maximum credit, and required verification. Keep appointment letters, meeting dates, minutes or service logs, and a signed statement from the association describing your responsibilities. If the role is ongoing across renewal cycles, document which dates belong to which cycle.
8. Complete self-study, approved readings, quizzes, or assessments
Self-directed learning is flexible, but it must be structured and verifiable. NSCA lists personal-development activities, approved home-study courses, and quizzes tied to its own content. NCRA describes article and book tests and maintains an approved-books list for its members.

Compare routes before you commit
The fastest-looking option can create the most administrative work if it requires pre-approval or an unusual proof package. Use this comparison to choose an activity that fits your renewal situation.
| Route | Format and scheduling | What to confirm | Typical proof to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conference, clinic, seminar, workshop | Usually live; several sessions in one event | Relevant subject, approved event or provider, attendance rules, event cap | Agenda, attendance record, certificate, session list, receipt |
| Webinar or online course | Live, recorded, or self-paced | Exact course approval, delivery requirements, quiz or time rule | Certificate, syllabus, objectives, attendance or quiz result |
| College coursework | Term-based and often scheduled over weeks | Eligible topic, qualifying grade, post-certification timing | Transcript or grade record and syllabus |
| Certification or professional training | Exam, class, or skills course | Recognized credential, accreditation, caps, cycle limits | Credential, pass notice, provider accreditation, course outline |
| Speaking or panel service | Scheduled event with preparation | Role eligibility, credit cap, whether preparation counts | Program, invitation, organizer verification, presentation materials |
| Published work | Submission and publication timeline | Accepted publication type, authorship, cycle and credit limit | Published article or work, author and date evidence |
| Eligible volunteer role | Service period or recurring meetings | Named role, minimum period, maximum credit | Appointment letter, service log, association verification |
| Self-study, reading, or test | Self-paced, often completed at home | Approved material, assessment, assigned hours, credit category | Material details, approval record, score report, certificate |
Costs vary by provider and route. Budget for registration, membership, travel, tuition, examination, evaluation, or transcript fees when applicable; the cited guidance does not establish one universally cheapest or fastest option.

- Read the current renewal rule. Use the licensing board or certifying association’s current handbook, portal, and approved-provider list. Record the cycle dates and required units.
- Screen the activity before payment. Ask whether the exact title, provider, format, subject, and number of hours qualify. Request an eligibility determination or pre-approval when the rules call for one.
- Complete every condition. Attend the required percentage, pass the assessment, submit the evaluation, or finish the assignment by the stated deadline. Partial attendance may not receive partial credit.
- Collect evidence immediately. Download certificates and score reports, photograph sign-in confirmation if permitted, and save the syllabus, agenda, transcript, or organizer letter in a folder named for the renewal cycle.
- Translate hours using the governing rule. Do not apply NSCA’s 0.1-CEU-per-hour examples or NCRA’s CEU/PDC distinction to another credential. Enter the unit exactly as the board describes it.
- Submit through the required channel. Some organizations require self-reporting, some accept provider reporting, and some audit later. Keep originals after submission and note the confirmation number.
Recordkeeping checklist for construction professionals
- Credential name, number, jurisdiction, and renewal-cycle dates.
- Activity title, provider, instructor, date, location or platform, and delivery format.
- Approval number, eligibility email, or approved-provider listing captured on the completion date.
- Hours completed and the exact unit awarded: CEU, contact hour, PDH, PDC, or another label.
- Certificate, transcript, syllabus, agenda, attendance evidence, quiz result, publication, or service verification matching the activity.
- Submission date, portal receipt, and any correspondence resolving an eligibility question.
A simple spreadsheet can track planned, completed, submitted, and accepted credits separately. That prevents a certificate from being mistaken for an approved credit and makes an audit response faster.

Treating recorded content like live attendance
Some systems distinguish live participation from recorded webinars. NSCA’s handbook does, requiring pre-approval for recorded webinars while not requiring it for live attendance under its stated rule. Save the format and approval evidence for every online activity.
Using a provider’s total hours as your credit total
A provider may advertise clock hours while your credential awards a different unit or applies a cap. Convert only under the governing organization’s published formula and record the capped amount, not the marketing total.
Waiting until the deadline to gather transcripts or letters
Universities, event organizers, and associations may take time to issue documentation. Request records when the activity ends and maintain them through the entire renewal cycle.

Choosing a route for a typical construction workload
When travel is practical
A conference or workshop can deliver concentrated live hours and direct access to instructors. Verify the event’s approval before booking travel, then keep the dated agenda and attendance proof.
When project schedules are unpredictable
On-demand coursework or approved self-study can fit evenings and shutdown periods. Select a course with a defined assessment and downloadable records, and confirm that self-paced hours are accepted.
When you already hold a related credential
An additional recognized certification may provide both a new professional qualification and eligible renewal credit. Check accreditation, exam requirements, cycle limits, and whether the authority awards credit for the credential itself, the training, or both.
When you regularly share technical expertise
A professional presentation or published article may be efficient, but only if the authority recognizes the activity and you can document authorship, dates, learning objectives, and any cap. Routine jobsite instruction or ordinary academic teaching may be excluded.
Final decision rule
Choose the route that your exact licensing or certification authority accepts, fits your available schedule, produces the required credit type, and leaves a complete evidence trail. Confirm first, complete the activity exactly as specified, and file the proof before moving on to the next credit.
