Open the fireplace damper completely before lighting a fire. Verify the opening by looking up into the firebox with a flashlight, keep it open while the fire burns, and leave it open until the ashes are cool. Close it only after the fire is fully out and the ashes are cold.
A damper that will not open fully, or smoke that continues entering the room, is a reason to stop using the fireplace and arrange a professional chimney inspection.

What a fireplace damper does
A fireplace damper is a movable metal plate or valve in the flue path. When open, it creates a route for smoke and combustion gases to travel from the firebox into the chimney. When closed after the fireplace is no longer in use, it seals much of the open connection between the house and the chimney.

A closed damper can force smoke back into the room when a fire is burning. A damper that is only partly open restricts the movement of smoke and gases, and restricted airflow can also contribute to creosote formation. EPA fireplace-safety guidance warns that the damper should remain open until ashes are cool because an open route to the chimney can help prevent poisonous gases from building up indoors. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) puts the pre-lighting rule plainly: the damper should be in the “fully open position before you light your fire, for safety reasons.” Its homeowner guidance also says to look up into the fireplace with a flashlight to check that it is open.
Two common damper arrangements
Not every fireplace uses the same mechanism. Identify where yours is located before trying to adjust, repair or replace it.
| Arrangement | Location | How it is operated | What to know about repair or replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Throat damper | At the throat, directly above the firebox | Usually an in-fireplace handle, lever or similar mechanism | The damper must move freely and open enough to pass smoke. Repair or replacement has to match the existing fireplace and chimney. |
| Top-mounted damper | At the top of the chimney | Operated from the firebox by a cable or chain | CSIA describes this as a possible economical alternative to replacing a throat damper. When closed, it can also keep rain and animals out of the chimney, but dimensions and installation details are specific to the chimney. |
A handle or chain position is not proof that the flue is open. Linkage can slip, a plate can bind, or a previous repair can leave the control misaligned. Visual confirmation through the firebox is more reliable than guessing from the control alone.
How to open and check the damper before lighting
Use this sequence every time you intend to burn a fire, even if the control appears to be in its usual position.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Locate the control. Find the handle, lever, chain or cable that operates your damper. Do not assume a control marked “open” is correctly connected.
- Move it to the fully open position. Use the normal range of motion. If it binds, stops short or feels disconnected, do not force it.
- Look up into the firebox with a flashlight. CSIA specifically recommends this check. You should be able to see the flue opening rather than a solid plate blocking the throat. A top-mounted damper may be harder to judge from below, so verify its movement and position according to the fireplace design or its instructions.
- Confirm that the passage is not obstructed. If the damper plate, linkage or visible flue area is damaged or blocked, postpone the fire and arrange an inspection.
- Light the fire only after the opening is verified. If you cannot establish that the damper is fully open, the safe choice is not to burn until the fireplace has been checked.
Do not use a partly open damper as a way to slow a fire or keep more heat in the room. The correct draft depends on the installation and conditions, and a restricted opening can send smoke into the room.
Keep the damper open while the fire burns
Leave the damper fully open from the first flame through the active burn. The chimney needs an unrestricted route for smoke and combustion gases. CSIA’s homeowner material concludes that leaving the damper completely open whenever the fireplace is being used is probably best.
Some older consumer advice suggests reducing the opening after a fire is established. That is not a good general instruction for a safety article: fireplace designs and draft conditions differ, and the consequences of a wrong setting are smoke exposure and increased fire risk. Unless the appliance manufacturer gives a specific, compatible operating instruction, keep the damper fully open while burning.
Smoke, strong combustion odor or visible haze in the room means the system is not exhausting correctly. Do not respond by closing the damper farther. Stop adding fuel, check that the damper is fully open, and follow the troubleshooting steps below.

When can you close the damper after a fire?
Keep the damper open until the fire is completely out and the ashes are cool. EPA’s direct instruction is to open the fireplace damper before lighting and keep it open until the ashes are cool. Do not close it merely because flames are no longer visible: glowing embers can remain hot and continue producing gases.
Once the ashes are cold, the damper can be closed when the fireplace is not in use. Closing it at that point limits the open path between the room and chimney. It can also help keep outdoor rain and animals out when the installation uses a top-mounted damper.
Never close the damper and go to bed while ashes are still warm. If you are uncertain whether the fire is fully out, leave the damper open and continue monitoring it in accordance with the fireplace and appliance instructions.
What to do if smoke enters the room
First check the opening
Confirm visually that the damper is fully open. A control can move without opening the plate completely, so use the flashlight check rather than relying on the handle position. Do not keep experimenting with a narrow opening while a fire is burning.

Use properly dry wood and stop if the problem continues
EPA guidance recommends using dry wood to establish a full fire when addressing smoke problems. If smoke persists after the damper is fully open and dry wood has been used, stop using the fireplace. The continuing smoke may indicate a draft, chimney or damper problem that cannot be corrected safely from the room.
EPA advises finding a CSIA or National Fireplace Institute professional when smoke continues. A qualified inspection can evaluate the damper, flue path and other conditions that affect venting. Do not treat persistent smoke as a normal feature of the fireplace.
Why a restricted damper matters
A damper that is not open wide enough slows the movement of smoke. EPA explains that restricted air supply can contribute to creosote formation. Creosote is a combustible deposit in the chimney, so operating with inadequate airflow creates a maintenance and fire-safety concern in addition to the immediate smoke problem.

CSIA inspection guidance includes checking that the damper moves freely and opens sufficiently to let smoke pass. A professional can determine whether the existing mechanism can be repaired or whether a compatible replacement is needed. Avoid forcing a lever or chain: excessive force can damage the control or leave the plate in an unknown position.
If the damper position is unclear, treat it as closed until a visual check or inspection proves otherwise. The cost of postponing a fire is small compared with the risk of filling the room with smoke or combustion gases.
Inspection and routine maintenance
CSIA recommends annual inspection of chimneys and vented appliances by a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep. An annual check is especially important if the damper has become stiff, the fireplace has been unused for a long period, smoke behavior has changed, or you notice damage around the throat or chimney top.

- Ask the inspector to verify that the damper opens fully and moves freely.
- Have the flue path checked when smoke enters the room despite an apparently open damper.
- Arrange inspection before using a fireplace with a damaged, missing or disconnected control.
- Follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions for factory-built fireplaces rather than assuming that a masonry-fireplace procedure applies.
Local service requirements and the fireplace design may add steps that general guidance cannot cover. Keep the appliance manual available for the technician.
Replacing a damper: match the installation
A top-mounted chimney damper can be a practical replacement option when a throat damper needs replacement, but it is not a universal part. The chimney’s dimensions, the existing control arrangement and the fireplace construction determine compatibility.
Before purchasing any replacement, establish:
- Whether the existing system is throat-mounted or top-mounted.
- The exact chimney dimensions and the type of mounting required.
- How the replacement will be operated from the firebox.
- Whether the fireplace is masonry or factory-built and what its manufacturer permits.
- Which installation details must be completed by a qualified professional.
There is no single replacement procedure or set of dimensions that fits every chimney. A professional inspection should identify the correct part and confirm that it opens fully, seals appropriately when closed and can be operated safely. Do not buy a generic damper solely because its control looks similar to yours.
Common damper mistakes to avoid
- Lighting first and checking later: Always verify the opening with a flashlight before the first flame.
- Trusting the handle alone: A moving handle does not guarantee that the plate is fully open.
- Partly closing a live fire: Do not use the damper as an energy-saving shortcut; restricted airflow can push smoke into the room and contribute to creosote.
- Closing as soon as flames disappear: Warm embers and ashes require the damper to remain open.
- Forcing a stuck mechanism: Stop and arrange an inspection instead of damaging the linkage or leaving its position uncertain.
- Continuing to burn with indoor smoke: Persistent smoke is a reason to stop using the fireplace and seek qualified help.
- Assuming every fireplace is interchangeable: Throat and top-mounted dampers differ, and replacement fit depends on the installation.
A simple operating rule
For an ordinary open fireplace, the safe sequence is straightforward: fully open and visually check the damper before lighting; leave it fully open for the entire fire; keep it open until the ashes are cool; then close it when the fireplace is unused. If that sequence cannot be completed because the damper is stuck, damaged or difficult to verify, do not burn until a qualified chimney professional has inspected it.
