There is no single fire-pit setback that applies everywhere. Local rules differ, and the required distance can depend on whether the fire is classified as a recreational fire, a portable outdoor fireplace, or open burning. Before lighting, check your local fire department’s current rules and fire bans, then follow the fire pit’s manufacturer instructions. Keep the pit out from under trees and overhanging branches, and clear combustible vegetation around it.
How far should a fire pit be from a house?
Use the distance required by the fire authority for your location and the type of fire pit you have—not a number borrowed from another city or a general safety graphic. Official examples vary: Calgary Fire Department guidance calls for at least 2 metres from a house, garage, fence, or property line; Franklin Fire Department says an above-ground fire pit should be at least 15 feet from the home or other structures; and Pflugerville and Joliet fire department guidance each uses 15 feet for specified structures or approved outdoor pits.

The U.S. Fire Administration’s outdoor safety pictograph advises keeping fire pits, wood piles, and propane tanks 10 to 30 feet from a home. That range is federal safety guidance, not one universal legal minimum. It should not be used to override a local code, fire department order, or a manufacturer’s larger clearance requirement.

Why the required distance changes
Fire codes can distinguish among a recreational fire, a portable outdoor fireplace, open burning, and a bonfire. Those categories may have different setback rules, and a retail fire pit is not automatically governed by the same distance as every other category. The type of fuel or appliance, local code adoption, and local exceptions can also matter.
A California Fire Code summary dated November 2025 illustrates the difference: it gives 25 feet from structures or combustible material for recreational fires, 15 feet for portable outdoor fireplaces, and 50 feet for open burning and bonfires. The summary notes a stated exception to the portable-outdoor-fireplace requirement for one- and two-family dwellings, but those figures should not be read as a rule for every California city or every yard. Local adoption and the precise appliance classification determine which provision applies.
| Source and setting | Distance described | What the guidance measures or qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Calgary Fire Department | At least 2 metres | Property line, house, garage, or fence; local fire-pit guidance. |
| Franklin Fire Department | At least 15 feet | Above-ground pits from the home or other structures. |
| Pflugerville Fire Department | At least 15 feet | Structures and fencing. |
| Joliet Fire Department | At least 15 feet | Structure or fence for approved outdoor pits under its local policy. |
| U.S. Fire Administration safety pictograph | 10 to 30 feet | Home distance for fire pits, wood piles, and propane tanks; a safety range, not a universal code minimum. |
| California Fire Code summary dated November 2025 | 25 feet; 15 feet; or 50 feet | 25 feet for recreational fires from structures or combustible material; 15 feet for portable outdoor fireplaces, with a stated one- and two-family dwelling exception; 50 feet for open burning and bonfires. |
The table is a comparison of cited examples, not a menu from which to choose the most convenient number. The California figures come from a code summary, while the other values are agency guidance or local policy. Confirm the current adopted rules with the authority responsible for your property.

How to find the rule for your yard
- Identify the local authority. Check the fire department or fire authority serving the property. If the address is covered by a city, county, or other local fire authority, confirm which one sets the applicable rule.
- Check current restrictions. Ask whether a fire ban or other temporary restriction is in effect before planning to light the pit. Queensland Fire Department advises checking local council restrictions and current fire bans; restrictions can be location- and time-specific.
- Describe the appliance accurately. Note whether it is a fixed or portable pit, whether it burns wood or uses gas, and whether it is intended as a recreational fire or another category under local rules. Do not assume that a portable retail product is automatically treated as a portable outdoor fireplace under the code, or that it is automatically treated as open burning.
- Ask what the setback is measured from. The rule may name the house, any structure, a fence, a property line, or combustible material. Calgary’s example includes a property line and fence; other cited rules name structures or fencing. If the rule is unclear, ask the fire authority rather than measuring only from the house.
- Compare the local requirement with the product manual. Franklin and Queensland guidance both direct users to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Use the greater applicable clearance if the local rule and the manual specify different distances; contact the authority or manufacturer if the requirements appear inconsistent.
- Confirm before building or placing the pit. If the rule does not clearly cover your appliance or site, get an answer from the local fire authority before installation or use. A local exception may be limited to a named dwelling type or appliance classification.
Do fences count as a required setback?
They can. Calgary includes fences in its 2-metre guidance, and the cited Pflugerville and Joliet rules also name fencing or fences in their 15-foot requirements. Other rules may measure from a structure, property line, or combustible material instead. Because the language changes by jurisdiction, do not assume a fence is excluded just because it is not part of the house.
When checking a local rule, use its exact measurement point. If it says “from structures or fencing,” measure from the nearest relevant fence as well as the house. If it says “from combustible material,” ask whether the fence or nearby landscaping is included. Do not substitute a general home-distance recommendation for a rule that names the fence separately.
How far should a fire pit be from trees and vegetation?
Keep the pit out from under tree canopies and away from overhanging branches. Calgary Fire Department’s guidance says fire pits must not be under trees, branches, plants, or other materials that can catch fire. Queensland Fire Department similarly recommends placing fires in cleared areas without overhanging branches and with minimal grass and scrub.

- 22-Inch Round Fit: This round fire pit screen cover measures 22 in. across and 4.6 in. high. Check your fire bowl size before ordering.
- Heavy-Duty Steel Construction: 12 reinforcing ribs support the screen, while the high-temperature, rust-resistant black coating helps protect it during outdoor fire use.
- Helps Reduce Flying Sparks: Fine mesh helps limit sparks and embers. Lift the screen by its handle and use the included folding poker to adjust firewood.
- Four-Section Assembly & Trunk Storage: Connect the four panels with 12 screws. Disassemble the fire pit screen for storage in your car trunk.
- Backyard, Camping & Beach Use: Bring this fire pit spark screen to backyard fires, camping trips, beach gatherings, or RV outings.
The cited guidance does not establish one universal horizontal distance from a tree trunk. That means a trunk-distance number cannot safely be inferred from these sources. Check your local requirements and the appliance manual, and assess whether branches, dry plants, grass, or scrub could be exposed to heat or sparks. A pit that meets a house setback can still be poorly sited if combustible material is overhead or close by.

Vegetation clearance guidance also varies. Franklin Fire Department recommends clearing dry vegetation and brush 10 to 20 feet in all directions. That is Franklin’s guidance, not a nationwide rule. Follow the local authority’s requirements for your yard and conditions rather than applying that range everywhere.

Set the pit on a level surface, as Franklin’s guidance specifies, and follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions. Franklin also advises against using a pit on a wooden deck. A surface can be a concern even when the horizontal distance to the house or fence appears sufficient; check the manual and local rules for the appliance and surface you have.

- Overhead hazards: Do not position the fire under trees or branches, and check for other combustible material above it.
- Ground and nearby fuels: Clear dry brush and other combustible vegetation to the extent required by your local authority; Franklin’s 10-to-20-foot recommendation is specific to its guidance.
- Surface: Use a level placement area and do not use a pit on a wooden deck under Franklin’s guidance. Follow any stricter product instructions or local restrictions.
- Wind and fire weather: Do not light a fire in high winds or dangerous fire-weather conditions. The U.S. Fire Administration advises against starting a campfire or burning yard debris during high winds, drought, or high temperatures.
Prepare to supervise and extinguish the fire
Placement is only one part of safe use. Pflugerville Fire Department calls for constant adult monitoring and for extinguishing equipment to be immediately available. Its listed options include an extinguisher, hose, water, or sand. The cited California code summary likewise requires the fire to be attended until extinguished and calls for approved fire-extinguishing equipment. Follow the local authority’s rules about which equipment is acceptable for your fire and site.
Calgary’s local guidance calls for a fire-safe mesh screen or spark guard. If your local rules require one, use a screen that fits the appliance. A screen helps address escaping sparks, but it does not replace the required distance from a house, fence, vegetation, or other combustible material.

- Keep an adult with the fire while it is burning; do not leave it unattended.
- Have the locally accepted extinguishing equipment ready before lighting, not somewhere that requires a search or delay.
- Use the required spark screen or guard where local guidance calls for one, and handle the screen and burning material carefully.
- Keep the fire attended until it is extinguished, as required by the cited California code summary, and follow the local authority’s instructions for your appliance.
Before-lighting checklist
- Have you confirmed the current local rule and whether a fire ban or other restriction applies?
- Have you identified how your local authority classifies this appliance and what the setback is measured from?
- Does the pit meet both the applicable local distance and the manufacturer’s clearance instructions?
- Is it away from fences and other named features, out from under branches, and clear of combustible vegetation?
- Is it on a level, suitable surface rather than a wooden deck under Franklin’s guidance?
- Are wind and fire-weather conditions safe, and is an adult ready to supervise the fire?
- Is the required screen or spark guard fitted, and is accepted extinguishing equipment immediately available?
What to do if the distances or rules conflict
Do not resolve a conflict by selecting the shortest figure found online. A local rule may be stricter than a general safety recommendation, while a manufacturer may specify a larger clearance for a particular product. Confirm the appliance category and applicable local provision with the fire authority, and ask the manufacturer about its manual if the product requirement is unclear. Until the requirements are reconciled, do not light the pit.
If you cannot establish a permitted placement, choose another location or do not use the pit. An apparently safe measurement from the house does not settle separate requirements for fences, property lines, combustible material, overhead branches, or temporary fire restrictions.
