Driverless metro trains do not make independent decisions like a self-driving car. A railway-wide control system grants movement authority, onboard automatic train protection (ATP) enforces safe speed and braking, automatic train operation (ATO) drives the permitted route and stops at stations, and an operations control centre (OCC) supervises alarms, communications and service recovery. Platform and train doors open only after the train is correctly docked and the safety system permits release. Emergency actions combine automation with control-room staff, station teams and, in some operating modes, a roving attendant.
What “driverless” means on a metro railway
“Driverless” describes who performs normal driving tasks; it does not mean that a train is unsupervised. Safe movement is divided among several functions:

- Automatic train protection (ATP): prevents movement beyond the permitted authority and enforces speed, braking and door-release conditions.
- Automatic train operation (ATO): controls acceleration, cruising and braking within the limits that ATP allows.
- Operations control centre: monitors train status, receives alarms, communicates with passengers and issues authorised remote commands.
- Station and onboard personnel: investigate incidents, assist passengers and take over tasks when operating rules require it.
The exact division changes by railway, automation grade, infrastructure and operating rulebook. The Government of India’s Metro Railways General Rules, 2020, for example, permit communications-based train control (CBTC) or another technology for moving-block operation and specify moving-block working for driverless lines. That is a jurisdiction-specific example, not a universal legal requirement.
How a driverless train navigates the line
1. Signalling creates a movement authority
Before a train can move, the railway’s train-control system establishes a safe movement authority: a defined limit and operating envelope based on the position of other trains, route settings, speed restrictions and infrastructure conditions. In a moving-block system, the safe separation can be calculated from each train’s current position, speed and braking performance rather than from only fixed blocks. The result is a continuously updated permission, not a driver choosing a route by sight.

CBTC is one way to implement moving-block control, but it is not the only possible technology worldwide. The Indian rules explicitly allow CBTC or another technology. Different projects use different radio, trackside, onboard and central architectures, and their degraded modes are project-specific.
2. Onboard equipment follows the permission
Once a movement authority is available, onboard computers regulate the train within it. ATO requests the target speed and braking profile; ATP independently checks that the requested movement remains safe. If the train approaches a limit too quickly or a safety condition is lost, ATP can command braking even when ATO has requested continued running.
This arrangement is deliberately layered. ATO is the normal driving function, while ATP is the safety enforcement function. The train therefore does not need a human driver to decide every acceleration or brake application, but it still needs validated route data, reliable train-control communications and equipment that can fail safely.
3. The OCC supervises the service
The control centre receives train-status information and abnormal indications. Controllers can see where trains are, identify alarms, communicate with passengers and coordinate station staff. The rules examined for Indian metro operation also describe transferring alarms to the OCC, providing passenger emergency communication and using CCTV views where installed.
Supervision is not the same as remote joystick driving. Controllers normally manage the traffic plan and disruptions; automatic protection remains responsible for enforcing movement limits. When a fault or emergency requires a different action, the applicable rulebook determines which remote command is permitted and which staff member must attend the train or station.
4. Position and sensing are system-specific
There is no single universal “driverless sensor package.” A railway may combine train-control radio, trackside equipment, onboard odometry and other detection methods, but the precise architecture depends on the project. Public descriptions of a standard or vendor system should not be treated as a complete specification for every automated metro.

China’s standards registry lists GB/T 46097-2025, General technical specification of fully automatic operation system for urban rail transit. The record says it was published on 29 August 2025 and became effective on 1 March 2026. The registry entry establishes the standard’s scope and status; it does not expose the full technical text, so it cannot by itself establish a universal sensor or positioning method.
How the train stops at a station
Approach and braking
As the train approaches a station, ATO follows a calculated speed profile that accounts for the required stopping point and the line’s permitted speed. ATP continuously checks that the train can stop within its authority. Braking is adjusted as the train closes on the platform, rather than being triggered by a person judging the distance from the cab.
Docking at the designated point
Stopping is not complete merely because the wheels have stopped turning. The train must be properly docked at the designated platform position and satisfy the conditions for the correct door side. The cited Indian rules make proper docking and ATP door-release permission prerequisites for opening train doors.
Coordinating train and platform doors
Where platform screen doors are installed, the train doors and the matching platform doors operate as an interlocked pair. The safety system verifies the permitted side and the docking condition before release. Only then can the corresponding doors open. This prevents a door from opening toward the track, into a gap, or at a position where the train is not correctly aligned.
Platform screen doors are a physical barrier between passengers and the track. A 2021 UITP infrastructure brief, citing the Observatory of Automated Metros’ World Report on Metro Automation 2018 (June 2019), reported that 87% of automated-line stations built during the preceding decade used platform screen doors as the predominant solution. That figure concerns that defined population and period; it is not a claim that 87% of all metro stations worldwide have them.
What happens if a platform door fails
The rules describe alarms or indications to the OCC and station personnel when a platform-screen-door failure occurs. A failed door therefore becomes a controlled operating condition, not a reason to assume that the train will open its doors normally. Local procedures may require the train to remain secured, a station response, a restricted mode or another authorised action. The correct response depends on the railway’s interlocking, equipment and rulebook.

How emergencies are detected and managed
Detection inside the train and station
Emergency handling starts with several possible signals rather than one universal detector. Train diagnostics may identify fire or smoke conditions; passengers can operate an emergency alarm and use a communication channel; staff can report an unusual event; and CCTV, where provided, can give the OCC a visual view. These inputs are presented to controllers and the responsible station or onboard personnel.
The control centre’s role
When an alarm arrives, the OCC identifies the affected train or station, communicates with passengers and coordinates the response. Controllers may issue authorised remote commands, regulate other trains and request station assistance. The system is designed so that a controller can manage the wider railway while responders deal with the immediate scene.
Roving attendants and station staff
Some driverless modes include a roving attendant on the train. The attendant can report unusual events and, when the applicable procedure requires it, take over operation. Station staff provide first response at platforms, help passengers, manage access and support evacuation or emergency services. An unattended train does not imply an unattended station or an absent response organisation.
Why there is no single emergency script
A fire, smoke indication, medical event, obstruction, loss of communications and flooding present different risks. The train might be held, moved under a restricted procedure, or taken to a station, depending on the incident, available equipment, passenger condition, track layout and local rules. It is unsafe to claim that every automated train always stops immediately, always proceeds to the next station or always evacuates in a tunnel.
The Indian rules assign duties for station fire response and evacuation and require local procedures for actions. Those provisions illustrate the principle: automation supplies detection, protection and communication, while people apply the incident-specific plan.
Automation grades and onboard staffing
“Driverless” can describe more than one operating arrangement. The following distinction is explicit in the Indian rules and should not be generalized to every railway’s terminology.

| Operating arrangement | Normal onboard role | What the distinction means |
|---|---|---|
| Driver-operated service | A qualified driver performs normal driving tasks. | The cited driverless provisions do not define this category’s complete technical specification. |
| Driverless train operation (DTO) | A roving attendant is aboard. | The attendant is not a conventional driver but can report events and take over operation when the procedure requires. |
| Unattended train operation (UTO) | Operation may be with or without a roving attendant, according to special instructions. | UTO therefore does not establish one universal staffing model; the railway’s special instructions control. |
When comparing systems, examine four separate questions: who is onboard, which movement-control technology is used, whether the platform is physically protected, and which alarms, communications and remote commands are available during an incident. Those features reflect a railway’s design and risk assessment; they do not create a universal ranking of safety or performance.

For a construction or systems-integration team, the critical issue is the interface between civil works, rolling stock, signalling and operations. A train can be fully automatic only when these interfaces are tested as one safety system.
- Platform geometry: the stopping point, platform edge and train-door positions must support the docking tolerances used by the door-release logic.
- Platform screen doors: where provided, their controls and status indications must exchange the safety information needed for train-door interlocking.
- Signalling and communications: trackside, onboard and control-centre equipment must deliver movement-authority information and alarm reporting in both normal and degraded modes.
- Control-centre functions: operators need train status, passenger communications, CCTV views where installed and clearly defined remote commands.
- Emergency procedures: fire, smoke, passenger alarms, loss of communications, door faults and evacuation require written local procedures, trained staff and exercises.
- Handover evidence: commissioning must demonstrate not only a successful automatic trip, but also safe responses when a door, communication link, alarm channel or train-control function is unavailable.
These are interface and assurance requirements, not a universal construction checklist. The project’s safety case, authority requirements and operating rules determine the exact tests and acceptance criteria.
Energy and operating performance
Automatic driving can use consistent acceleration and braking profiles, but savings depend on the system and service pattern. Siemens states that its Trainguard MT CBTC system can deliver energy savings of up to 20% through optimised speed profiles. That is a vendor claim about that configurable system, not a measured result that applies to every automated metro.
Automation’s more general operational benefit is repeatability: trains can apply the planned speed profile and station stop consistently while the OCC supervises the network. The achievable headway, energy use and recovery from disruption still depend on infrastructure, timetable, rolling stock and operating rules.
A practical way to evaluate any driverless metro
- Identify the automation grade. Ask whether a driver, roving attendant or no onboard operator is present in normal service, and what happens in degraded operation.
- Identify the movement-control method. Determine whether the line uses CBTC or another technology and whether trains operate with moving-block working.
- Trace the station-stop chain. Check how the system commands braking, confirms docking, selects the correct side and authorises train and platform doors.
- Map the alarm path. Follow a fire, smoke, passenger-alarm or door-fault signal from the train or platform to the OCC and station staff.
- Read the local emergency rule. Confirm who may issue remote commands, when a train is held or moved, and where passengers are evacuated for each incident type.
- Check physical protection. Establish whether platform screen doors or another controlled-access arrangement protects the platform edge.
- Separate standards from marketing. A standards registry establishes a document’s status; a supplier’s performance figure applies to the named system under its stated conditions.
The central idea is simple: a driverless metro is a coordinated control, protection and response system. Automatic operation handles routine movement and stopping, while the OCC, station staff and defined onboard roles handle the exceptions that automation alone cannot resolve.
