With enough suitable light, plants use energy from light, water and carbon dioxide to make carbohydrates, releasing oxygen. A grow light can supplement or replace inadequate natural light indoors, but results depend on the light reaching the leaves, its spectrum, the schedule of light and darkness, and the plant’s needs.
How artificial light supports plant growth
Photosynthesis uses light energy to turn water and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates that support plant growth; oxygen is released as a byproduct. If light is insufficient, a plant cannot produce carbohydrates at a sustainable rate and may weaken. A grow light supplies photons indoors when window light is inadequate.
Light affects plants in three distinct ways:
- Quantity: How much light reaches the leaves. The delivered amount falls as the plant is moved farther from the fixture.
- Quality: The wavelengths, or spectrum, available. Red and blue wavelengths affect growth. Broad-spectrum or white grow lights can suit many plants and stages, but no single color is best for every plant or purpose.
- Duration: How long the light is on, alongside the length of the dark period. For some plants, day length influences flowering.
Which light measurements matter?
Bulb wattage and how bright a light looks to a person do not tell you how much useful light reaches a plant. The measures below describe different things and are not interchangeable.

| PPF | The plant-usable photon output from a light source per second. |
| PPFD | The photon flux density reaching a surface, such as a leaf. It changes with distance from the fixture. |
| Lumens | Brightness as perceived by human vision; it does not directly measure the wavelengths plants need. |
| Watts | Electrical energy use, not the light intensity delivered to a plant. |
When comparing grow lights, consider plant-relevant output information such as PPFD when available, the area to cover, and the intended distance from the fixture. The University of Minnesota Extension explains these measures in its guide to lighting for indoor plants and starting seeds.

Choosing and positioning a grow light
University of Minnesota Extension describes LEDs as energy efficient, long lasting, broad spectrum, relatively low in heat, and available in many styles; the tradeoff it notes is a higher initial cost than other bulb types. Fluorescent lights can cost less up front but do not last as long and use more energy than LEDs. Incandescent lights are inefficient, produce heat, and can encourage stretching. High-pressure sodium and metal-halide fixtures are large, hot sources commonly used commercially. These are general technology characteristics, not comparisons of specific products.
Example starting distances
UMN Extension gives the following example distances from the light to the plants. Treat them as starting points: fixture intensity, coverage, heat and plant response vary.

How long should a grow light stay on?
There is no single daily schedule for every plant. UMN Extension lists these example durations:

The differing seedling ranges reflect different guidance contexts, not a universal prescription. Follow the guidance suited to your plants and setup, and do not leave seedlings lit continuously. A timer can help keep a chosen schedule consistent.
Why darkness matters
More light hours do not automatically mean more growth. Plants may respond to photoperiod—the length of day and night—and flowering can depend on it. Oregon State University Extension Service explains that uninterrupted darkness is important for floral development in short-day plants; its guide to environmental factors affecting plant growth discusses photoperiod-sensitive plants. Avoid interrupting the dark period when a plant’s flowering response depends on it.

What plant symptoms can tell you
Changes in growth can be clues that the light setup needs adjustment, though symptoms are not a substitute for plant-specific guidance.
- Possible insufficient light: leggy stems, pale or yellowing foliage, leaf drop, loss of variegation, or failure to form flower buds.
- Possible excessive light: scorched or bleached leaves.
Consider light level and placement alongside the plant’s requirements. Moving a light closer or farther changes the amount reaching the leaves; check the plant’s response after adjusting it.
