The strongest sign that a TV is failing is a problem that persists across the TV’s own Home or Settings screens, built-in apps, and multiple inputs after you have ruled out cables, external devices, settings, and power. A line or flicker limited to one HDMI device may be a bad cable or source. A permanent line visible everywhere—and during the TV’s built-in picture test—more strongly suggests an internal display or electronics failure.
Use the checks below before paying for repair or replacing the television. They can help you identify what is failing, determine whether it is safe to keep using, and decide whether repair makes financial sense.

The biggest signs your TV may be failing
Permanent lines, bars, or missing sections of the picture
Vertical lines, horizontal lines, colored bars, clusters of dots, large dark patches, or a section of the screen that stays black are among the clearest warning signs—especially when they remain in exactly the same place on every source.
Open the TV’s Home or Settings screen and then try a built-in app. If the defect appears on those screens as well as on live TV and HDMI sources, the problem is probably inside the television. TCL recommends checking the Home screen, Settings menu, built-in apps, live TV, and HDMI inputs before requesting service. See TCL’s troubleshooting guidance for lines on the screen.

A line that appears only from one cable box, game console, or streaming device is weaker evidence of panel failure. Test that device with another cable, HDMI port, or display first.
Flickering that also appears in the TV’s own test
Flickering can be caused by a failing backlight, panel, power supply, or display electronics. It can also come from an HDMI connection, source device, unstable power, or an energy-saving or ambient-light setting.
Turn off features such as automatic brightness, ambient-light detection, or Eco mode temporarily, then check the TV’s internal Picture Test. Samsung says that lines or flicker visible during its Picture Test indicate a TV-side problem that may require service; if the test looks normal, investigate the external device, cable, or source. The exact menu names vary, but Samsung’s example paths include All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test on 2022-and-later models and Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Picture Test on some older models. Consult Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guide for model-specific instructions.
A picture that becomes progressively dimmer
If the entire picture is dim on menus, built-in apps, and external inputs, the backlight, power circuitry, display panel, or light sensor may be deteriorating. First check brightness, contrast, picture mode, automatic brightness, and energy-saving settings. A dim picture limited to one source can instead be caused by that source’s output settings or signal.
A picture that appears briefly and then goes dark, particularly while sound continues, often points to a backlight or power-related problem. It is not proof of a particular failed component, and the TV should not be opened for a casual inspection.
Sound with no picture—or picture with no sound
Sound with no visible picture may result from a backlight, video board, display panel, or power problem. It may also be a wrong input, failed streaming device, HDMI handshake issue, or source interruption. Press Home or Settings and try a built-in app before concluding that the screen has failed.

For a sound problem, disconnect a soundbar, receiver, or HDMI-ARC/eARC device and test the TV’s internal speakers. Check mute, audio output, digital audio, and HDMI-CEC settings. If there is still no audio from built-in apps and menus, a speaker, audio board, or main-board fault becomes more likely.
Repeated shutdowns, restarts, or boot loops
A TV that repeatedly turns off, restarts, freezes on its logo, or works only after several attempts may have a software problem, overheating, a connected-device conflict, or a failing power supply or main board.
Remove USB devices and HDMI equipment, restart the TV, check for firmware updates, and observe whether the problem occurs in a built-in app or on the Home screen. Persistent boot loops after those checks are a reasonable reason to request service.
No power despite a verified outlet
Before diagnosing a dead TV, replace the remote batteries and try the physical power button. Plug the television directly into a known-working wall outlet, temporarily bypassing a power strip, surge protector, smart plug, or extension cord. Check the power cord for damage and confirm whether the standby light is off, flashing continuously, or showing an unusual pattern.
If the outlet and cord are verified but the TV still will not start, an internal power supply or main-board fault is possible. TCL identifies repeated immediate shutdowns, continuously flashing standby lights, unusual clicking or buzzing, excessive heat, smoke, sparks, and burning odors as reasons to contact support. See TCL’s no-power troubleshooting instructions.

Image retention is different from burn-in. Temporary retention may fade after varied content or an appropriate panel-maintenance cycle. Burn-in is persistent uneven wear, such as a logo or interface remaining visible after the original content is gone. On LG OLED televisions, Pixel Cleaning is a model-specific maintenance function. It may help with some temporary artifacts, but it is not a guaranteed cure for permanent burn-in or panel damage. LG advises seeking support when lines or spots persist after the relevant cleaning process. Read LG’s OLED Pixel Cleaning guidance.
Cracks, pressure marks, impact damage, or liquid intrusion
A cracked or visibly bent panel, pressure mark, dark impact spot, or liquid inside the set is physical damage, not a problem that a software update or factory reset can repair. Photograph the damage and check the warranty before authorizing paid work; accidental and liquid damage are often treated differently from manufacturing defects.
Smart-TV freezing and app failures
Crashing apps, slow menus, Wi-Fi disconnections, delayed remote commands, failed updates, and restarts during streaming do not automatically mean the display hardware is failing. The television may have a network problem, an outdated app, limited processing capacity, or software instability.

A factory reset can resolve some software problems, but it erases settings and signs you out of apps. Use it only after recording passwords, picture settings, and network details. TCL discusses these limitations in its Fire TV screen troubleshooting guidance.
A television can remain physically sound while its operating system, apps, Wi-Fi behavior, or processing speed becomes frustrating. That is a usability or support issue rather than proof that the display is dying.

- Display the TV’s own Home or Settings screen. If the defect is visible there, suspect the TV. If it appears only during one show, channel, app, or HDMI input, suspect the source first.
- Disconnect every external device. Remove cable boxes, consoles, streaming sticks, Blu-ray players, receivers, soundbars, and USB devices. Test the TV’s built-in apps and menus.
- Try another input. Move the same device to another HDMI port, then test a different device on the suspected port. Lines on only one port may indicate the port, cable, receiver pass-through, or source—not the panel.
- Replace or reseat the HDMI cable. Inspect both connectors for looseness or damage and use a known-good cable. A correctly rated, reasonably short cable from a reputable retailer is sufficient; an expensive “premium” cable will not repair a panel defect.
- Power-cycle both devices. Turn the TV and source off, unplug them, wait about 30 to 60 seconds, reconnect them, and retest. This interval reflects manufacturer troubleshooting examples rather than a universal electrical rule.
- Run the internal Picture Test or self-diagnosis. A defect visible in the test is substantially stronger evidence of a TV-side failure than a defect visible only from an external source.
- Test the wall outlet directly. Bypass power strips and smart plugs, and try another known-working outlet if practical.
Samsung, TCL, and LG all recommend comparing the issue across internal menus, built-in apps, inputs, cables, and devices before concluding that the television itself has failed. See TCL’s pixel troubleshooting steps and LG’s guidance for lines, spots, and dots.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to test lines, dots, and pixels safely
- Open a plain, solid-color screen or the TV’s own Settings menu.
- Check whether the mark stays in exactly the same location.
- Open a built-in app and switch between multiple inputs.
- Disconnect all external devices and restart the TV.
- Run the manufacturer’s Picture Test or equivalent self-diagnosis.
- Photograph or record the defect before contacting support.
Clean the screen only with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Do not press on a suspected pixel, rub the panel, use a hard tool, or spray cleaner directly onto the display. TCL specifically warns against hard pressure and harsh cleaners when checking pixel issues.
What different symptoms usually suggest
| Symptom | Possible TV-side cause | Important alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Sound but no picture | Backlight, panel, video board, or power fault | Wrong input, failed source, or HDMI handshake |
| Picture briefly appears, then disappears | Backlight or power circuitry | Energy-saving setting or source interruption |
| Permanent vertical line | Panel or internal display-driver connection | Cable or source if visible only on one input |
| Horizontal lines or colored bars | Panel, timing/control circuitry, or source path | HDMI cable, source device, or signal issue |
| Whole screen flickers | Power, panel, backlight, or settings | Eco mode, cable, source, or unstable power |
| Dim picture everywhere | Backlight, sensor, power issue, or picture setting | Eco mode or ambient-light detection |
| One dead pixel | Pixel or panel defect | Content artifact; check the pixel policy |
| Fixed logo or image | Image retention or OLED burn-in | Temporary retention that may clear |
| Repeated restarts | Software, overheating, power supply, or main board | Remote commands or connected USB/HDMI device |
| No sound | Speaker, audio board, settings, ARC/eARC, or source | Muted source or soundbar routing |
| No power | Power supply, main board, cord, or outlet | Remote batteries or power strip |
These are symptom patterns, not definitive component diagnoses. A technician must confirm the failed part.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop using the TV immediately
Stop using the television, unplug it if you can do so safely, and arrange qualified service if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning or electrical odor, liquid inside the set, excessive heat, a frayed or hot power cord, repeated electrical clicking or buzzing, visible internal damage, or a scorched outlet.
Do not open the television for casual inspection. Power circuitry and capacitors can present electrical hazards even after the set has been unplugged. Use external checks only and contact the manufacturer, an authorized service provider, or a qualified repair technician.

A brief plastic creak during warm-up or cool-down can result from thermal expansion on some models. Persistent electrical buzzing, repeated clicking during failed startup, or a burning smell is more concerning. Do not generalize a noise described as normal in one model’s manual to every television.

What can often be fixed cheaply
- Remote batteries or a failed remote.
- A loose, damaged, or incompatible HDMI cable.
- An incorrect input or source-device setting.
- A power strip, smart plug, extension cord, or outlet problem.
- Picture, audio, Eco, or energy-saving settings.
- A disconnected antenna or cable feed.
- A faulty streaming stick, set-top box, or game console.
- Temporary software or network problems.
- Firmware updates or network-setting resets.
A factory reset is a last-resort software step. It may fix corrupted settings or software behavior, but it cannot repair a cracked panel, permanent lines, burn-in, a failing backlight, or an electrical fault.
When professional service is more likely
Arrange service when the internal Picture Test fails; lines remain across menus and inputs; large areas of the picture are missing; sound-with-no-picture continues after source isolation; the TV repeatedly shuts down or boot-loops after a reset; or the set has no power despite a verified outlet and cord.
Have the model number, serial number, purchase date or receipt, software version if available, warranty information, and photos or video of the fault ready. Samsung and TCL both recommend providing identifying information and documentation when requesting service. Start with the manufacturer’s official support route—for example, LG repair service, Samsung support, or TCL’s repair guidance.
Is it worth repairing or should you replace it?
Repair is more attractive when:
- The TV is relatively new or still covered by a manufacturer or retailer warranty.
- The problem is a cable, setting, software issue, remote, or external device.
- The likely repair involves a replaceable board or power component at a reasonable written quote.
- The TV is large, premium, specialized, or expensive to install and replace.
- The panel itself is healthy.
Replacement is more attractive when:
- The panel is cracked, severely damaged, or has major permanent lines, dark zones, or burn-in.
- A panel replacement quote approaches the cost of a comparable new TV.
- Multiple unrelated components are failing.
- The set is old enough that app compatibility, software support, or speed is also deteriorating.
- The repair warranty is short or uncertain.
- The TV is inexpensive and diagnosis plus labor would consume much of the replacement cost.
Best Buy’s published national averages, identified on its protection page as updated April 2024, list approximate figures of $1,000–$4,200 for a TV panel, $395 for a main system board, $340 for a power supply, $260 for speakers, and $255 for inputs. These are retailer-provided estimates, not quotes; actual prices vary by model, region, labor, and parts availability. See Best Buy’s TV protection and repair-cost information.
Panel replacement is especially important to price carefully because the panel is often the most expensive component. As a practical rule of thumb—not a technical standard—replacement generally becomes more attractive when repair would cost roughly half or more of a comparable new TV, or when several components are failing. Account for delivery, mounting, installation, calibration, haul-away, and recycling costs as well as the sticker price.
Do not use age alone as a diagnosis. There is no universal age at which every TV fails. A newer television can fail prematurely, while an older one may remain reliable and worth keeping.
What not to do
- Do not press or rub the display to “fix” a line or pixel.
- Do not spray cleaner directly onto the screen.
- Do not open the TV unless you have the appropriate training and equipment.
- Do not continue operating a set that smokes, sparks, overheats, or smells burnt.
- Do not assume a factory reset will repair a hardware fault.
- Do not buy an expensive replacement before testing the source device and cable.
- Do not assume one dead pixel guarantees warranty replacement.
- Do not treat Pixel Cleaning as a guaranteed cure for permanent OLED burn-in.
Final decision checklist
- Is the fault visible in the TV’s Home, Settings, or built-in app screens?
- Does it appear on every input?
- Have all external devices been disconnected?
- Have you tried a known-good HDMI cable and another input?
- Have you completed a 30-to-60-second power cycle?
- Does the built-in Picture Test fail?
- Have you checked the exact warranty and pixel-defect policy?
- Is there smoke, heat, odor, liquid, sparks, cord damage, or unusual electrical noise?
- Have you compared a written repair quote with a comparable replacement?
If the problem appears only on one HDMI source, start with that device, cable, port, or signal. If it appears on the TV’s own menus and internal test—and especially if it is paired with power, heat, odor, or physical damage—the TV itself is likely failing and should be serviced or replaced based on warranty and repair economics.
