The Dave & Buster’s venue at Westfield Hawthorne Mall in Vernon Hills, Illinois, turned its exterior cladding into a highly visible part of the brand. Completed in March 2014, the 40,000-square-foot location used approximately 3,900 square feet of custom-colored aluminum composite panels in three unusually named colors: Ionic Sunflower, Yam and Cornucopia Tan.

This is a documented case study of one location, not proof that every Dave & Buster’s building uses the same palette or panel system. Its importance is the design connection: color, scale, finish and detailing were coordinated to make a restaurant, sports bar, arcade and entertainment venue read as sleek, modern, energetic and technology-oriented before a guest ever entered.

A single project, not a chain-wide specification

The project profile published by Building Enclosure in 2015 identifies the work as Dave & Buster’s Vernon Hills, Illinois, new location at 424 Hawthorn Center, part of the expansion of Westfield Hawthorne Mall. Construction was completed in March 2014. The owner was Dave & Buster’s Entertainment, Inc., and Aria Group Architects designed the venue.

That distinction matters when interpreting the façade. The available documentation describes this particular 40,000-square-foot venue and its 2014 design decisions. It does not establish that the same panel colors, panel quantities, attachment method or finish remain the standard at all current locations. Dave & Buster’s later remodel communications describe refreshed spaces and upgraded finishes, but do not identify a metal-panel specification or confirm that the Vernon Hills assembly is still used across the chain.

What was installed on the Vernon Hills exterior?

Panel area, colors and dimensions

The exterior incorporated approximately 3,900 square feet of Laminators Inc. Omega-Lite aluminum composite panels. The project profile reports three custom colors:

  • Ionic Sunflower
  • Yam
  • Cornucopia Tan

There were approximately 30 to 35 panels in each color, with individual panel lengths reaching 121 inches. The color names are reproduced as reported; the profile does not provide paint codes, colorimetric values or a current corporate color standard. They should therefore be treated as project-specific finish names rather than a definitive Dave & Buster’s palette for future work.

Panel construction

According to the project account, each panel used a corrugated polypropylene core between two finished aluminum sheets. The profile characterizes the assembly as non-absorbent, water-resistant and easy to maintain. Those are reported product and project attributes, not an independent test result or a promise of performance in every exposure condition.

The documented assembly should not be reduced to “colored metal sheets.” Core construction, outer-skin thickness, joint design, fasteners, substrate, air and water management, and project engineering all affect how a composite-cladding wall performs. The source does not publish a structural specification, fire-performance classification, warranty terms or a current bill of materials.

Finish and coating

Linetec applied a two-coat Fluropon PVDF finish manufactured by Valspar. The project profile says the finish met AAMA 2605 requirements and describes resistance to humidity, color change, chalk, gloss loss and chemicals. AAMA 2605 compliance identifies a demanding architectural coating-performance standard; it is not a quantified service-life guarantee for this façade, nor does it remove the need for correct detailing, cleaning and inspection.

How the Dry Seal installation method shaped the façade

S&S Panel Sales distributed the panels, and Metalmaster Roofmaster installed them using Laminators’ Dry Seal method. The profile says this approach produced a deep reveal while allowing drainage and ventilation behind the panel system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That reveal is both visual and technical. A pronounced joint shadow helps separate the large color fields, making the façade read as a deliberate composition rather than a flat sheet. At the same time, a drained and ventilated cavity gives water a designed path out of the wall and permits air movement behind the cladding. The documented statement does not replace project-specific water-management design: designers still need to coordinate flashings, openings, terminations, movement joints, penetrations and the supporting wall.

For a construction team, the practical lesson is to specify the entire cladding assembly rather than naming only a panel brand. The panel, finish, joint profile, attachment system and drainage strategy work together. Substituting a generic aluminum composite sheet without checking those interfaces can change appearance and performance.

Why the colored panels communicate the brand

Color as an identity-bearing surface

A neutral enclosure would have kept the building in the background. The Vernon Hills design instead used three saturated, custom-named colors in conspicuous blocks. The result makes the exterior itself part of the identity system: a passerby can recognize an entertainment destination from the parking lot or mall approach, before reading a sign.

The project profile links the bold colored panels and custom finishes to Dave & Buster’s identity standards. That supports a careful interpretation: the panels function as a brand-presence and wayfinding device. It does not prove a measured increase in visits, recognition or sales. The visual effect is an architectural reading of the documented treatment.

Scale reinforces the “larger-than-life” promise

Panel lengths up to 121 inches and roughly 3,900 square feet of coverage create broad fields of color rather than small decorative accents. Large uninterrupted surfaces are legible at the scale of a shopping-center elevation and can hold their visual impact amid signs, parking areas and neighboring storefronts.

That scale aligns with Dave & Buster’s own description of its in-store graphics. In a corporate filing, the company says: “The oversized graphics and images throughout the store are intended to communicate our brand personality by being fun, contemporary, and larger-than-life.” The Vernon Hills exterior extends the same idea outward. The façade does not merely contain the entertainment program; it advertises an energetic experience through size and contrast.

Material finish connects modernity and durability

Aluminum composite panels provide a crisp, manufactured surface that suits a technology-oriented entertainment venue. The specified PVDF finish supports a consistent appearance across the colored fields, while the documented water-resistant and low-absorption characteristics address the practical demands of an exposed commercial façade. The combination lets the design look polished without relying on fragile interior materials outdoors.

Aria Group Architects’ project description states that the updated look conveys “a sense of energy, technology and fun befitting the combined retailer, restaurant, sports bar and gaming center.” In this reading, material and message are inseparable: the clean panel geometry supplies the modern frame, and the high-impact colors supply the playfulness.

The broader Dave & Buster’s design language

The company describes its concept as “Eat, Drink, Play, and Watch,” combining food service, a sports-bar environment, games and entertainment. Its real-estate information also describes a combined entertainment, restaurant and sports-bar model and lists two-level storefront height or façade presence among site requirements. Those documents explain the scale and program the architecture must accommodate, but they do not prescribe the Vernon Hills metal-panel assembly.

Aria Group describes the design approach across locations this way: “From the exterior architecture to the interior design aesthetic and programming, each new and remodeled location reflects a cohesive brand identity emphasizing the newly refined food-and-games experience and an interconnected atmosphere for guests to enjoy.” The Vernon Hills façade is a concrete example of that principle. Exterior color, interior graphics and the entertainment program were treated as one identity rather than as unrelated packages.

What current remodel information does—and does not—confirm

Dave & Buster’s current “Reimagined” communications describe remodeled locations with refreshed spaces, upgraded finishes and modern design. A company blog entry dated October 29, 2024, describes a brighter, more modern remodeled experience while noting that features vary by location.

Neither current source identifies metal-panel products, the Ionic Sunflower/Yam/Cornucopia Tan palette or the Dry Seal method. A remodel at another venue could therefore look different, use a different enclosure system or retain only selected aspects of the earlier visual language. The responsible conclusion is limited: Vernon Hills demonstrates how the brand was expressed in 2014; it is not evidence of a current chain-wide construction standard.

How to apply the case study to a new commercial façade

1. Start with the identity objective

Translate the brand into observable architectural decisions. For an entertainment venue, that might mean a high-contrast palette, large graphic zones, a strong entry focus and a finish that remains visually consistent under intense exterior lighting. Write those objectives before selecting a panel profile so the material serves the experience rather than becoming the concept.

2. Establish a color and scale schedule

Document each color by an approved sample and a controlled reference, not by a memorable name alone. Coordinate the percentage of each color, panel orientation, joint rhythm and relationship to signs, glazing and neighboring façades. The Vernon Hills project used three colors and panels up to 121 inches long; those figures illustrate the visual power of large fields but do not dictate dimensions for another site.

  • [Wide Applications]: These corrugated galvanized panels are ideal for construction roofs or fencing, such as garages, garden sheds, patios, stables, chicken coops, mobile homes, sheds, wall decorations, and other construction or hardware-related covering needs

3. Specify the complete wall system

Identify the panel construction, skins, core, finish, attachment method, cavity, flashings, substrates and interfaces. Require shop drawings that show corners, parapets, sills, door and window heads, sign mounts, control joints and penetrations. Confirm structural loads, thermal movement, fire requirements and local code obligations for the actual building; none of those project-specific values are supplied in the Vernon Hills profile.

4. Protect the drainage and ventilation path

If a drained and ventilated reveal system is selected, maintain continuity behind the cladding. Coordinate weeps, screens, closures and transitions so sealants or insulation do not block the intended path. Review mock-ups for joint depth, water management, color alignment and tolerance before releasing full production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Control finish procurement

Obtain finish samples under the lighting conditions in which guests will see the building. Confirm the coating specification, gloss and color tolerances, cleaning compatibility and warranty responsibilities. A finish described as meeting AAMA 2605 should still be installed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s requirements and the project specifications.

6. Plan maintenance at the design stage

Large panels reduce the number of joints but make dirt, impact damage or a mismatched replacement conspicuous. Establish access for inspection, a cleaning method compatible with the coating and a process for ordering replacement panels by approved color and lot information. Keep as-built records of panel locations and concealed conditions so future repairs do not rely on visual guessing.

Comparing alternative façade treatments without overclaiming

The Vernon Hills documentation is a case study, not a product comparison. If an owner is evaluating another cladding approach, compare the options against the same decision criteria:

Decision axis Questions to answer
Color and visual impact Can the system reproduce the approved colors, maintain gloss and create the desired large-scale composition?
Panel construction What are the core, outer skins, thicknesses and allowable panel sizes?
Attachment and water management How are panels supported, joined, drained and ventilated, and how are openings detailed?
Coating and exposure Which coating standard applies, and what cleaning, ultraviolet, humidity and chemical-exposure requirements govern?
Maintenance and engineering What access, replacement strategy, structural design, fire review and project-specific approvals are required?

Without comparable test data and specifications, it is not sound to rank one façade product as universally better than another. The right choice depends on the building’s code requirements, exposure, budget, schedule, desired identity and qualified installer.

What this example teaches

The Vernon Hills façade succeeds as a brand expression because several decisions reinforce one another. Custom color makes the building identifiable; large panels make the color legible at commercial scale; a crisp aluminum finish supports the contemporary message; and the drained, ventilated installation method gives the visual composition a buildable enclosure behind it.

Its lesson for architects, owners and contractors is not to copy a color list mechanically. It is to connect identity goals to measurable specifications, then preserve the technical performance of the wall while delivering the intended experience. The project profile documents one clear instance of Dave & Buster’s “Eat, Drink, Play, and Watch” proposition reaching beyond signage and graphics into the metal skin of the building.
