Prune clematis according to its flowering group: Group 1, which flowers on last year’s growth, is shaped just after flowering; Group 2 is pruned lightly in late winter or early spring to preserve buds and stems; and Group 3, which flowers on new growth, can be cut back before spring growth begins. If you do not know the group, remove only dead or broken stems until you can identify the cultivar or observe its bloom pattern.
First, identify the clematis pruning group
The group tells you when the vine blooms and which stems are likely to carry flowers. Labels may use numbers (1, 2, 3) or letters (A, B, C). Calendar dates vary with local climate, so use the plant’s growth stage—especially the approach of spring growth—as well as the cultivar name. The University of Maryland Extension explains that clematis groups are based on growth and flowering habits and recommended pruning times: Vines for Maryland Gardens: Pruning clematis (revised July 2026).

| Group | Where flowers form | When to prune | How much to prune |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 / A | Mainly on previous-season growth | Immediately after flowering, if shaping is needed | Lightly; routine pruning is often unnecessary |
| 2 / B | On old wood, new wood, or both, depending on cultivar and subtype | Late winter or early spring | Lightly; preserve sound stems and plump live buds |
| 3 / C | On current-season growth | Late winter or early spring, before active growth | Cut back to a strong low pair of buds or roughly 6–12 inches above the ground, as local guidance recommends |
How to prune each group
Group 1: prune after the early flowers fade
Group 1 clematis flower in early spring on growth made the previous season. They often need little or no routine pruning. If the vine is tangled, too large, or needs shaping, wait until flowering has finished, then remove weak, dead, or damaged stems and trim as needed. Pruning immediately after bloom gives the vine time to make growth that can bear next season’s flowers.

Group 2: protect the stems that carry early flowers
Group 2 is the most variable group. Some cultivars flower first on older stems and later on new growth; others differ in how they repeat. In late winter or early spring, remove dead or weak growth and, where appropriate, trim back to sound, plump buds. Avoid a hard cut unless you accept losing some or all of that season’s early flowers.
Because Group 2 cultivars and pruning recommendations can overlap, check the cultivar name and its specific guidance rather than assuming every large-flowered clematis should be pruned identically. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension’s Clematis Varieties Pruning Guide and UMass Amherst’s Clematis provide additional group and variety information.

- ONE-HAND SAFETY LOCK: The easy-access safety lock opens and closes with one hand for faster trimming, then securely holds the blades closed for safer carrying and storage
Group 3: cut back before spring growth
Group 3 blooms on growth produced in the current season, so it can be cut back in late winter or early spring before active growth starts. Cut to a strong low pair of buds or retain roughly 6–12 inches of stem, following local guidance and the vine’s condition. Recommendations differ on the exact height, but the aim is to leave strong growth points low on the plant.

If you do not know the group
- Look for the cultivar name. Check the plant tag or garden records, then consult a clematis reference such as University of Maryland Extension or Illinois Extension.
- Use bloom timing as a clue. Early spring flowers suggest Group 1; repeat flowering may point to Group 2; later-only flowers may indicate Group 3. These clues are not definitive: winter damage to a Group 2 vine can remove its early display.
- Make only a cautious cleanup cut. Remove stems that are clearly dead or broken, but delay a severe cut until you know more. Cutting back an old-wood bloomer at the wrong time can remove stems carrying flowers.
- Observe the vine through a season. Record when it flowers and whether it blooms again later. That pattern can help narrow down the group if the cultivar remains unknown.
Adjust for winter damage, new plantings, and disease
Winter damage
Cut damaged stems back to live wood. Extensive winter dieback can reduce or eliminate the spring display of Groups 1 and 2. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that, after extensive dieback, cutting to around two feet in early spring is an option, but it sacrifices spring flowers: Growing Clematis in Iowa.
Newly planted clematis
Illinois Extension describes cutting back a newly planted clematis to encourage branching. Treat this as establishment guidance, not as the routine pruning schedule for a mature vine. Check the plant’s group before applying a hard cut in later years.

Possible clematis wilt
If stems wilt or show signs of disease, pruning may need to be part of disease management rather than routine shaping. Illinois Extension advises cutting affected stems below the infected portion and disposing of the clippings. Follow disease-specific guidance for the symptoms; a wilted stem alone is not enough to diagnose the problem.
What pruning does—and does not—do
Clematis can still flower without pruning. Pruning is useful for controlling vigorous or untidy growth, removing damaged material, and keeping the vine in shape, but the timing matters more than making an annual cut. A wrong severe cut can cost a season’s flowers without necessarily killing the plant.
