Airport construction can change which road reaches your terminal, where a driver can stop, how you get from a parking lot to the terminal, or where a shuttle picks you up. It does not automatically mean that parking is closed. The effect depends on the airport, terminal, direction of approach, construction phase, and travel date, so check current airport instructions before leaving.
What can change when an airport is under construction?
Airport access is a connected system: approach roads feed terminal roadways, drop-off and pickup curbs, parking facilities, shuttle stops, and routes that drivers use to circle back. A change to one part can affect how you reach another. The Federal Aviation Administration’s Advisory Circular 150/5360-13A says terminal roadways and parking facilities should be integrated into the overall terminal-planning process so they function as a balanced system. Its exact guidance is: “It is important that the terminal roadways and parking facilities are integrated into the overall terminal planning process to ensure a balanced system.”

For travelers, construction may mean a ramp or entrance is closed, lanes merge near the terminal, the route depends on which direction you approach from, or a curb moves to another level or terminal side. Parking may remain available even if its entrance or shuttle stop changes. A temporary curb can also mean a longer walk or a different route indoors.

Construction impacts are airport- and phase-specific; there is no single pattern that applies to every terminal or travel date.

Will construction change the route to your terminal?
It can, especially near the terminal, even when regional roads remain open. A project may reroute a terminal entrance or limit which direction of travel can use it. Since access roads, curbside roads, and recirculation roads work together, a detour on one segment can alter the route to another.
For example, a January 6, 2026 notice from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport described phase-specific detours during bridge construction. Access instructions differed by terminal and direction of approach; travelers coming from the south to Terminal C were instructed to pass the entrance and make a U-turn. Those were temporary directions for that construction phase, not current route guidance. Check DFW’s construction information and the airport’s current traveler tools for live directions.
Do not rely on a route you used on a previous trip, or assume that directions for one terminal apply to another. Read the notice for your terminal and approach direction, then follow airport signs and staff instructions at the site. A detour may send you past an entrance and around again rather than letting you turn directly into the terminal roadway, so make sure you understand the current route before choosing your approach.

The airport’s own notice is more likely to explain a terminal-specific closure, temporary curb, or direction-dependent detour. Recheck it close to departure because phases and temporary routing can change.
Where should you drop someone off or pick them up?
The correct curb can shift to a different level, terminal side, door, or temporary location. Arrivals and departures may not use the same access point, and a curb closure may affect only part of a terminal frontage. The change can also affect the pedestrian route from the car to check-in or baggage claim, not just the place where a driver stops.

Denver International Airport’s dynamic construction page describes south-end Level 5 and Level 6 closures, including southern Level 6 curbside and bridge or escalator closures, while northern Level 6 access remained available. It also notes temporary airline check-in moves for some carriers. Because the page and work conditions can change, use its current map and instructions rather than treating those details as permanent.
- Confirm the traveler’s airline, terminal, and whether the trip is a departure or arrival.
- Check the airport’s current construction notice or interactive map for the usable curb, level, and door.
- Confirm the location with the airline if its check-in area or terminal access may have moved.
- Follow signs and staff directions on arrival; do not stop at a closed curb or improvise a drop-off in an active traffic lane.
Also check the walking route from the temporary curb to check-in or baggage claim. A new stopping point may add distance or require a path through a garage or connector. If you are picking someone up, agree on the exact terminal, level, and door before driving in; “the usual curb” may not be usable, and a different level or side may be open instead.

When more than one curb or access point is available, compare which terminal and airline door it actually serves, whether the active construction phase affects its approach, and how far the passenger must walk. If the traveler has mobility needs, check the accessible path and assistance arrangements rather than judging the alternative by distance alone.
Is airport parking still open during construction?
Sometimes, but “open” is only one part of the question. Check three things separately: whether spaces are available, whether the vehicle entrance can be reached by your route, and whether the shuttle stop is in its usual place. A lot can remain in service while its approach changes; a shuttle pickup can move without the lot closing.
Airport notices illustrate why the distinction matters. Atlanta’s March 17, 2026 advisory described temporary lane merges near the Domestic Terminal and relocated airport and off-airport shuttle pickup and drop-off points for March 18–30, 2026. Those dates have passed; the notice is an example of the kinds of changes to look for, not a current condition. Salt Lake City’s May 7, 2026 notice said phased Terminal Drive paving planned for May 11–27 could affect drivers, rental-car customers, and parking patrons while keeping two lanes open. Those scheduled dates have also passed.

Before choosing a lot, check current parking availability and the project notice together. DFW lists live parking availability, prebooking, and construction updates among its traveler tools. A space showing as available does not by itself confirm the best entrance or the location of a shuttle pickup. Treat facility availability, vehicle access, and shuttle-stop location as three distinct questions.
Parking can be affected indirectly even when no lot closure is announced. A changed terminal approach may make the entrance harder to reach, while a relocated shuttle stop can change where you wait or how you connect to the terminal. Conversely, a construction notice about nearby roads does not automatically mean every parking facility is closed. Check the airport’s current parking page and construction advisory, and confirm whether any off-airport lot has issued separate shuttle instructions.
If you are comparing parking with being dropped off or taking transit, there is no universal cost, travel-time, or reliability winner based on construction alone. Compare which option reaches your terminal, whether its entrance or shuttle stop is affected, the walking distance and accessible route, and any airport advice to allow extra time. Check current availability and any reservation terms directly with the airport or lot; no general construction-related surcharge or price rule has been established.
Could a temporary curb mean a longer walk?
Yes. A replacement curb may be near another terminal, with the remaining route going through a garage, walkway, or connector. In a March 18, 2026 forecast, Raleigh-Durham International Airport described a temporary Terminal 2 departures curb near Terminal 1 for anticipated early-2028 work, with a route through the parking garage, moving sidewalks, and planned mobility assistance. The forecast also said road impacts were expected from mid-2027; those were future projections, not confirmation that the changes occurred on schedule.
If you or someone traveling needs an accessible route or help with mobility, check the airport’s current arrangements before departure. Ask about the route from the temporary curb, elevators or other accessible connections, and how to request assistance. Do not assume a moving walkway or assistance service is available at every airport or during every phase. If a longer walk may be difficult, contact the airport in advance to verify what help is available and where to meet it.

Should you use transit or another way to reach the airport?
Transit can reduce dependence on a congested terminal roadway, but whether it is practical depends on where you start, your luggage, accessibility needs, and operating hours. Check the airport and transit operator’s current route and schedule before switching modes. In its May 2026 paving notice, Salt Lake City named TRAX light rail as an alternative for that specific project. That option should not be generalized to airports without rail service or to dates when schedules differ.
Compare the options that actually serve your terminal. Consider whether the route is affected by the active work, where you will be dropped off, the walk and accessible path, whether a shuttle or transfer is required, and whether the airport advises allowing extra time. There is no universal travel-time, cost, or reliability ranking for these choices. A shuttle-dependent parking option and a direct transit route, for example, involve different transfers and walking routes; check the specific service rather than assuming one will be faster or easier.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much extra time should you allow?
There is no universal number of extra minutes that fits every airport project. Construction can affect only the last approach to one terminal, or it can change curb access, parking circulation, or a shuttle connection. The airport’s current notice may tell travelers to plan extra time; follow that guidance and account for the route and walking changes described there. If no specific time estimate is provided, do not treat a number from another airport or an older construction phase as a reliable estimate.
Allow time to follow the detour, find the correct level or door, and complete any added walk or shuttle connection. Recheck the airport advisory before travel, especially if you are driving to a particular terminal or using a parking facility. A date-specific notice can become outdated as a work phase changes.
How to prepare for an airport trip during construction
- Pin down the trip: note the airport, terminal, airline, travel date, and direction of approach. Notices may apply only to a particular terminal, road, or phase.
- Check current airport updates: review the construction advisory and map close to departure. Temporary routes can change as work progresses.
- Confirm the curb and door: verify the departure or arrival level and the right airline entrance with the airport or airline.
- Check parking details separately: confirm availability, entrance directions, and shuttle pickup location—not just whether the lot is listed as open.
- Plan for the walk: check the route from a temporary curb or shuttle stop, including accessible paths and how to arrange assistance if needed.
- Allow time as directed: follow any airport advice to plan extra time, and use construction signs and staff directions at the site.
- Recheck alternate transport: if considering transit, verify the operator’s current route and schedule as well as the airport’s advice.
Official examples are useful for understanding what can happen, but their details expire. DFW’s January 2026 Terminal C detour, Atlanta’s March 2026 shuttle relocations, Salt Lake City’s May 2026 paving schedule, and RDU’s future-impact forecast describe specific phases and dates—not standing instructions for later trips. Use examples to recognize possible impacts, then rely on current airport and airline information for your own trip.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I drop someone off during airport construction?
Check the airport’s current construction map or advisory for the correct terminal, level, curb, and door, then confirm the airline location if it may have moved. Follow airport signs and staff directions on arrival; temporary locations can change by work phase.
Is airport parking still open during construction?
It may be, but check parking availability, the route to the lot entrance, and the shuttle pickup location separately. Construction can change access or shuttle stops without closing the facility, and nearby road work does not automatically mean a lot is closed.
How much extra time should I allow?
There is no universal extra-time estimate for airport construction. Follow the airport’s current advice, and account for any detour, changed curb, longer walk, or shuttle connection described in its notice.

It can. Detours may depend on the terminal, direction of approach, and construction phase, even if regional roads remain open. Check current airport instructions for your terminal and follow onsite signs and staff.
Should I use public transit instead of driving?
Transit may reduce reliance on a congested terminal road, but whether it works depends on your starting point, luggage, accessibility needs, service hours, and the airport served. Check current airport and transit-operator routes and schedules before deciding.
The Bottom Line
Airport construction can change a terminal approach, curb, parking entrance, shuttle stop, or the walk to the terminal without closing every road or lot. Check current airport and airline information for your terminal and travel date, confirm parking and curb details separately, and follow onsite signs and staff directions.
