A 4-way switch lets one light be controlled from three or more locations. In the standard mechanical circuit, two 3-way switches sit at the ends and one or more 4-way switches sit between them in the traveler path. The 4-way device switches the connection between two traveler pairs; it does not have the single common terminal found on a 3-way switch.
Before replacing one, turn off the breaker, verify that the conductors are de-energized with an appropriate tester, and identify the exact device and circuit topology. Terminal markings, accepted wire types and gauges, and dimmer compatibility are model-specific. Never rely on insulation color alone or copy a diagram that does not match the installation.

Leviton describes the function plainly: “A 4-Way switch controls light(s) from three locations.” That description refers to a complete circuit containing two 3-way switches and one 4-way switch. The 4-way is an intermediate control, not a substitute for either end switch.
To control one light from four or more locations, the circuit still uses exactly two 3-way switches—one at each end—and adds two or more 4-way switches between them. Every additional 4-way is inserted into the traveler path. The light can be turned on or off from any location regardless of the position of the other switches.

The standard functional arrangement
A simplified functional diagram is:
line → 3-way → traveler pair → 4-way → traveler pair → 3-way → switched light
This is a functional overview, not a universal cable-routing diagram. Existing installations may bring line power, the load, or a cable segment into different boxes. The actual conductors must be traced and matched to the product’s instructions.

How the traveler paths work
A 3-way switch has a common terminal and two traveler terminals. The first 3-way selects which traveler carries power toward the intermediate devices. The final 3-way receives one of the traveler paths and sends power to the light through its common terminal.
A 4-way switch has four active terminals arranged as two pairs. Internally it can connect the pairs straight through or cross-connect them. Changing the handle changes which traveler from the incoming pair is connected to which traveler in the outgoing pair. Because the device only redirects travelers, it normally has no common terminal.
Straight and crossed states
Think of the 4-way as a selector with two possible internal states:
- Straight: each incoming traveler continues to the corresponding outgoing traveler.
- Crossed: the incoming travelers swap to the opposite outgoing terminals.
The two end 3-way switches determine whether a continuous energized route reaches the lamp. Flipping any one switch changes the combination of connections, so the light changes state from every control location.

4-way versus 3-way: identify the right device
| Characteristic | 3-way switch | 4-way switch |
|---|---|---|
| Role | End device in a multi-location circuit | Intermediate device between the two 3-way switches |
| Typical active terminals | One common and two traveler terminals | Two traveler pairs, four active terminals |
| Common terminal | Yes; usually marked differently from travelers | Normally no common terminal |
| Minimum circuit arrangement | Two 3-way switches for two-location control; paired with 4-way devices for additional locations | One 4-way plus two 3-way switches for three-location control |
| What the handle changes | Connects the common to one traveler or the other | Connects traveler pairs straight or crossed |
Do not identify a device solely by handle appearance. Read the terminal labels and the manufacturer’s model information. A switch with four terminals may be a different device, and electronic controls can use terminals that do not follow the mechanical pattern.
Plan the job before opening a box
A successful replacement starts with documentation rather than wire removal. Gather the switch model, circuit rating, number of control locations, and the type of load being controlled.
Record these facts
- How many locations operate the light?
- Is the device being replaced a mechanical 4-way, or part of a dimmer, timer, sensor or smart-control system?
- What voltage and ampere rating are marked on the existing device and the replacement?
- Which terminals are labeled as traveler pairs, line, load, neutral or ground?
- What conductor material and gauge are present?
- Does the replacement instruction sheet show the same circuit topology?
Photograph the wiring before disconnecting anything, but treat the photograph as a record—not proof of conductor function. A previous installation may already contain a wiring error.
Safety and identification sequence
- Switch off the correct breaker. Do not rely on the wall switch position. If the circuit is not clearly labeled, turn off candidate breakers one at a time.
- Verify de-energization. Use an appropriate, properly functioning tester on the conductors and grounding reference. Test the instrument on a known live source before and after checking the box when that procedure is appropriate for the tester.
- Remove the cover and inspect without pulling wires. Look for heat damage, loose terminations, aluminum conductors, brittle insulation, moisture or overcrowding.
- Identify by source and function. Trace which conductors form each traveler pair and which conductors connect to the end 3-way commons. Insulation color is only a clue; it is not a reliable function label in every installation.
- Compare the box with the exact product diagram. Stop if terminal labels, conductor count or cable routing do not correspond.
- Escalate uncertainty. A qualified electrician should handle unidentified, damaged, atypical or code-sensitive wiring.
These steps are general precautions, not a complete code-compliance procedure for every jurisdiction. Follow local requirements and the device instructions.

Installing a conventional mechanical 4-way switch
The following workflow applies only when the existing circuit is a standard two-3-way-plus-intermediate-4-way arrangement and the replacement instructions show the same topology. It is not a universal wiring recipe.
- Confirm the replacement. Verify that it is a 4-way device, that its voltage and load rating suit the circuit, and that the manufacturer permits the conductor material and gauge present.
- Map the conductors. Label the two wires in the incoming traveler pair and the two in the outgoing pair according to their source and destination. Do not assume a color convention.
- Read the terminal markings. Some devices mark pairs by color, position or a printed diagram. Keep each traveler pair on the pair of terminals specified by that model.
- Connect the grounding conductor. Attach grounding exactly as the device instructions and local rules require. Do not use a traveler terminal as a substitute for grounding.
- Make the terminations. Strip only the length specified by the manufacturer. Tighten side screws to the stated requirement if one is provided, and do not place more conductors under a terminal than permitted.
- Fold conductors carefully. Keep the device from being forced against the box, protect insulation from sharp edges, and orient the switch so its handle or markings match the intended position.
- Reinstall the cover and test. Restore power, operate every control location in several combinations, and confirm that the light responds from each one.
Why the product sheet matters
The Maxxima MEW-S1504W-4 installation sheet illustrates why generic diagrams can be unsafe. For that specific model, the screw terminals accept up to 12 AWG copper or copper-clad wire, while its push-in holes accept 14 AWG solid copper only. Those limits belong to that product and must not be generalized to another manufacturer’s switch.

If your conductors are stranded, aluminum, larger than the permitted gauge, or otherwise outside the instructions, use an approved connection method or select a compatible device under professional guidance. Never force an oversized conductor into a push-in opening.
Adding a fourth or fifth control location
Additional locations are created by inserting another 4-way switch into the traveler run. The two 3-way switches remain at the ends; every intermediate device is a 4-way compatible with the circuit.

- Confirm that the cable or conductors provide two traveler pairs through that box.
- Use the new device’s pair markings to keep the incoming and outgoing traveler sets organized.
- Test the complete chain from every location after installation.
Do not add a 3-way in the middle simply because it has a similar appearance. The circuit depends on the intermediate device’s straight-or-crossed traveler function.
Mechanical switching versus multi-location dimming
A standard mechanical 4-way circuit is not automatically compatible with a dimmer. Some multi-location dimming systems use a designated master dimmer and manufacturer-specific companion controls. The companions may communicate through dedicated terminals or a protocol that differs from mechanical traveler switching.
| Option | Use when | Check before installation |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional mechanical 4-way | You need on/off control in a standard circuit with two end 3-way switches | Terminal pairs, device rating, conductor acceptance and the exact wiring diagram |
| Master-and-companion dimming system | You need dimming from multiple locations and the dimmer family supports that arrangement | Approved master/companion models, maximum number of companions, load type, neutral requirement and the manufacturer’s topology |
Do not combine an ordinary 4-way with a random electronic dimmer because the terminal count appears similar. Compatibility must come from the dimmer family’s instructions. The available evidence does not establish one universal smart-switch retrofit method.

The light never turns on
- Turn the breaker off and verify that the device is actually a 4-way in the intermediate position.
- Check that both traveler pairs are connected to the correct pairs of terminals, not mixed one wire from each pair.
- Inspect for a loose screw, an incompletely inserted conductor or insulation captured under a terminal.
- Confirm that the end 3-way commons remain on their common terminals and were not swapped with travelers.
- Check the lamp, fixture connection and breaker only after the switch wiring is confirmed.
The light works from some locations but not others
- A traveler may be open, loose or landed on the wrong terminal pair.
- One 3-way may have been wired as though it were a 4-way, or vice versa.
- An intermediate device may be incompatible with an electronic dimming system.
- A conductor may have been identified by color rather than traced function.
The breaker trips or the device gets hot
- Turn the breaker off immediately and do not continue testing under power.
- Look for a short between a traveler and ground, pinched insulation, a loose strand or an incorrect line connection.
- Check that the load and circuit rating match the device.
- Replace heat-damaged parts and have an electrician inspect the circuit before re-energizing it.
The handle positions seem reversed
Handle orientation is not a reliable indication of on or off in a multi-location circuit. If the light changes correctly from every location and the device is installed according to its instructions, the circuit may be functioning normally. A handle that feels loose, fails to latch or produces inconsistent operation indicates a defective or incorrect device.

Buying a replacement: a practical checklist
Search for a “4-way switch” or “mechanical 4-way wall switch” when the circuit is a conventional mechanical installation. Choose a specific model only after checking:
- Voltage, amperage and load type rating
- Four-terminal 4-way configuration and clear pair markings
- Permitted copper, copper-clad or aluminum conductors
- Accepted wire gauges and whether push-in connections are limited to solid wire
- Grounding provision and box compatibility
- Manufacturer’s diagram for the exact model
- Compatibility with the existing 3-way switches and any dimming system
- Physical depth, yoke dimensions and cover-plate fit
A category match is not enough. Two products both labeled “4-way” can differ in terminal layout, conductor limits and installation method.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a universal color assumption: conductor colors vary with cable routing and prior work.
- Copying a diagram with a different topology: diagrams may show line and load entering different boxes.
- Looking for a common terminal on the 4-way: the common belongs to the end 3-way devices in the standard arrangement.
- Mixing electronic and mechanical controls: dimmer companions must be approved for the specific master.
- Ignoring conductor restrictions: push-in holes and screw terminals can have different material and gauge limits.
- Testing with power on while wires are exposed: de-energize and verify before every handling step.
- Assuming a failed switch is the only fault: a loose traveler, damaged cable, failed lamp or upstream connection can produce the same symptom.
When to stop and call an electrician
Professional help is the appropriate next step when the circuit does not match the product diagram, conductors cannot be positively identified, insulation or terminals show heat damage, aluminum or mixed wiring is present without an approved method, the box is overcrowded, or the breaker trips after the switch is installed. It is also prudent when local requirements, grounding arrangements or load calculations are uncertain.
A qualified electrician can trace the circuit, verify grounding and bonding, select compatible devices, and determine whether the existing installation meets applicable requirements. Do not experiment with an unfamiliar multi-location circuit simply because the switch has four terminals.
Final pre-energizing checklist
- The breaker is off and de-energization was verified with an appropriate tester.
- The replacement is a 4-way device intended for the circuit’s voltage and load.
- The two traveler pairs are identified by function, not color alone.
- Each pair is on the terminals specified by the exact model instructions.
- Conductor material and gauge comply with the device sheet.
- Grounding is connected as required.
- No insulation is trapped under terminals and no copper is exposed beyond the permitted strip length.
- The box can accept the device without crushing conductors.
- Every control location is tested after the cover is installed.
The key decision is simple: use a conventional 4-way only in the standard two-3-way intermediate circuit, and use a manufacturer-approved master-and-companion system when the goal is multi-location dimming. If the wiring cannot be mapped confidently to the exact instructions, stop and obtain qualified help rather than guessing.
