How a 10-Story High-Rise Was Assembled in About 28 Hours

A Broad Group high-rise was assembled onsite in a reported 28 hours, but factory fabrication took place beforehand. Here’s how the modular system worked and what the timing does—and doesn’t—mean.

A Broad Group residential high-rise in Changsha, China, was assembled onsite in a reported 28 hours and 45 minutes—but it was not built from raw materials in a day. The project used factory-made modules that had been prepared before delivery, then stacked, bolted together and connected at the site.

What the video shows

The video documents Broad Group’s Living Building system being assembled into a 10-story residential high-rise in Changsha. New Atlas reported that onsite assembly took 28 hours and 45 minutes, with at least three cranes and a large crew involved. New Atlas’s report describes the installation.

The phrase “built in a day” refers to work at the site, not the full project schedule. It does not include the earlier factory work, and the reporting does not establish that design, permits, foundations, transport or all commissioning were completed within that window.

How the modular system was assembled

Instead of constructing every part of the building at the site, the system shifts much of the work to a factory. According to New Atlas, the modules arrived with wiring, insulation, glazing and ventilation installed. At the site, crews stacked and bolted the modules together and connected utilities such as power and water. New Atlas and a Modular Building Institute interview describe the process.

Modules designed for transport

In the interview, Jeremy Zimman, BROAD USA’s director of communications, said the modules fold to the dimensions of a 40-foot shipping container for transport, then extend for installation. This makes shipping and rapid onsite assembly parts of one system; the interview does not provide a full logistics plan or explain the project’s transport arrangements.

Factory work still takes time

Zimman said the modules were manufactured offsite over 15 days. That period is distinct from the onsite assembly window: moving work into a factory can shorten the visible construction phase without making fabrication disappear from the schedule.

Why the reported assembly times differ

Two sources give different descriptions of the onsite timing, so the figures should not be merged into one exact duration.

Source Reported timing What it refers to
New Atlas, 2021 28 hours and 45 minutes Reported onsite assembly time
Jeremy Zimman, BROAD USA, in a Modular Building Institute interview A little over 20 hours His description of onsite assembly; he also said all 11 floors were completed in a little over 28 hours
The same interview 15 days Offsite module manufacturing, according to Zimman

Zimman described the project as 32,000 square feet and 11 floors. He said: “So, we built 10 floors in 24 hours, and all 11 floors were completed in a little over 28 hours and that’s the assembly on site.” That is a company representative’s account; New Atlas’s 28-hour-45-minute figure is a separate report.

What the speed claim does—and does not—show

The project demonstrates how a building system with substantial factory preparation can be assembled quickly onsite. It does not, on its own, establish how the system compares with conventional construction on total project duration, cost, safety or environmental impact.

Broad Group representatives have described the system as durable, earthquake-resistant, relocatable and suitable for several building types. Zimman also discussed B-CORE, which he described as a sandwich structure of stainless-steel plates with stainless-steel tubes between them. These are company claims, not independent findings in the cited reporting. The available sources do not provide independent test results, a code-approval record, project safety data, an independently assessed lifecycle analysis or a like-for-like cost comparison. New Atlas and the Modular Building Institute interview report the claims and descriptions.
