Architect Kelly Spanou and design collaborator Penny Alevizou kept the building’s irregular geometry and exposed evidence of its successive construction phases, allowing the original stone and later concrete to remain legible in the finished home.
A rural outbuilding with an accumulated history
The residence began as a rural keli, or outbuilding, and had already been converted into a functional dwelling before Spanou’s intervention. That earlier work included concrete structural elements. Rather than treating the house as a blank shell, the renovation worked with this layered condition: it removed applied finishes and partitions that obscured parts of the existing fabric, revealing stone masonry beside later concrete.

The project information gives the area as 115 square metres and describes the house as extending over two levels. Why the renovation leaves stone and concrete visible
The exposed materials make the building’s different phases perceptible rather than smoothing them into one uniform finish. The stone records the older fabric; the concrete belongs to later construction and prior alteration. Project descriptions also note cracks and unevenness in the exposed concrete floor, preserving signs of use instead of masking them with a newly regular surface.

This is not a claim that every original element was retained: the project accounts describe selective removal to reveal what lay beneath. The resulting interior sets rough stone and concrete against timber and smoother marble, making material contrast part of the spatial character.
An irregular plan organizes movement
The house’s geometry was not corrected into a conventional grid. Its project description says there is no 90-degree corner, and the design uses that non-orthogonal form to shape the plan and circulation. Rather than impose a regular outline, the renovation lets the inherited walls guide how people move through the rooms.

The kitchen island as a central element
A freestanding, monolithic kitchen island combines concrete, stone, and marble. It is set apart from the surrounding walls so that movement can pass around it. The island therefore serves as both a working kitchen element and a focal point within the irregular plan.

Timber partitions and useful reclaimed marble
Timber partitions define zones and provide storage without concealing the building’s overall geometry. Reclaimed marble is used for practical elements—including sinks, counters, and floor details—rather than being limited to a decorative surface. The reported palette also includes wood, stone, and concrete.

The house extends into the sloping site
The exterior work carries the same attention to movement beyond the interior. New openings and circulation respond to the terrain’s slope, linking the house with planted areas, a swimming pool, and an outdoor kitchen.
