You can host a welcoming backyard fire this fall—but first confirm that recreational fires are allowed where you live and that current conditions are safe. Local rules may distinguish a bonfire from a fire in a commercial pit, and neither a pit nor a spark screen makes a fire permissible everywhere. Once you have the go-ahead, choose a clear outdoor location, burn only dry seasoned wood, keep water close, and plan to fully extinguish the coals before guests leave.
Check whether a backyard fire is allowed
Before inviting guests or buying firewood, check with your municipality or local fire department about permits, fire-pit restrictions, and current burn bans. NFPA advises: “Check with your local fire department or municipality for any restrictions on fire pits. Obtain proper permits if required.” Read the NFPA fire-pit guidance.
Rules and conditions vary by location and can change. Check local air-quality alerts as well, and consult Tribal authorities when their rules apply. EPA’s archived guidance on backyard recreational fires recommends checking local restrictions and air-quality conditions; its page is archived, so use local authorities for current requirements. EPA also notes that no-burn-day requirements vary and points readers to state and local authorities in its wood-burning FAQ.
If a burn ban or other local restriction prohibits your fire, do not light one. Keep the gathering fire-free instead. A “bonfire” may be treated differently from a recreational fire in a commercial pit, so ask how your intended setup is classified rather than assuming a fire pit is exempt.

Choose a location with room around the fire
NFPA recommends placing an outdoor fire pit at least 10 feet (3 metres) from anything that can burn. Set it on level, noncombustible ground and keep it clear of the house, decks, other structures, vegetation, eaves, and overhanging branches. Check the pit manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements too; the NFPA distance is safety guidance, not a substitute for stricter local rules or product-specific clearances.
Arrange chairs well back from the pit, with clear walkways between the seating area and the house. Before dusk, remove trip hazards and make sure people can see where they are walking. Keep children and pets out of the immediate fire area, and have an adult attend the fire throughout the gathering.

Set up the safety area before lighting
Keep a garden hose or other water supply and a shovel within easy reach. A shovel can help you manage the fire and apply dirt or sand where appropriate. Use a spark screen only if it is allowed for your setup and compatible with the pit; it can help contain sparks, embers, and ash, but does not replace supervision, safe placement, or permission to burn.
Make sure everyone knows where the fire area ends and keep the route to the extinguishing equipment clear. If guests are roasting food, organize utensils and serving food in a separate area so people do not crowd the pit. Follow appropriate food-handling practices; fire-pit safety guidance does not establish food-safety instructions.

Burn clean, dry, seasoned firewood
Use clean, dry, untreated firewood. NFPA recommends clean, dry hardwood seasoned for at least six months in wood-burning fire pits. EPA’s best wood-burning practices and wood-burning recommendations likewise emphasize dry seasoned wood. A moisture meter can help you check whether wood is dry.
Do not burn garbage, plastic, yard waste, construction waste, pressure-treated or coated wood, or wet and moldy wood. These materials can produce unwanted smoke or emissions, and wet fuel can smolder. Build a manageable fire and maintain airflow rather than adding damp wood. EPA also recommends locally cut firewood as a way to reduce the risk of transporting invasive forest pests.

Plan for smoke and guests’ comfort
Wood smoke can affect health. Check air-quality conditions before the event and avoid burning during an alert. Be especially attentive to children, older adults, pregnant people, and guests with heart or lung conditions. Let guests know in advance that there will be a wood fire so they can decide whether to attend or sit farther away.
Put the fire out before everyone leaves
Stop adding wood early enough to extinguish the fire before guests depart. Do not leave the pit unattended or assume that a fire has gone out because flames have disappeared.
