If a Hoshizaki ice machine is not making ice, first identify its exact model and check the matching manual. Power, bin status, cleaning, and water-related issues are reasonable starting points where the model’s instructions support them; alarm meanings and repair procedures vary. A three-beep alarm, for example, is documented for Hoshizaki KM cubers and should not be treated as a universal code for every Hoshizaki machine.
Start with the exact model and its manual
Record the model and serial number from the machine’s data plate. Use them to find the corresponding documentation in Hoshizaki America’s Manuals & Guides portal. The portal provides manuals and cleaning sheets, as well as reference materials and technician pocket guides. Use the instructions for the exact model; a similar model name does not establish that its controls or troubleshooting steps are the same.
If the manual does not resolve the issue, Hoshizaki’s Service & Support page provides a parts-manual lookup and an authorized service representative locator.
What to check when the machine will not run
Begin with visible, low-risk operating conditions and follow only checks that appear in your model’s manual. A Hoshizaki maintenance guide for KM-80/81/101/115/116 lists these checks for an appliance that does not run:

- 80 lb built-in ice storage capacity, crescent style cube, front opening bin, stainless steel exterior, 6" painted legs, ice bin opening is ADA compliant, 115v/60/1-ph, 7.1 amps, NEMA 5-15P, NSF, cETLus, UL
- Confirm the outlet has power.
- Check that the control switch is in the position specified by the guide.
- Check whether the ice bin is full.
- If the model has a drain pump, check its connection and status as directed by the guide.
For the models covered by that guide, a drain pump at capacity can stop the appliance. The pump continues until the water level falls, after which the appliance can restart. This arrangement should not be assumed for other Hoshizaki models.
When cleaning or water quality may be involved
Hoshizaki recommends cleaning and sanitizing at least once a year; its guidance says more frequent cleaning may be needed where water quality is undesirable. Scale or dirt can contribute to erratic operation, and Hoshizaki’s KM cuber troubleshooting guidance calls for thorough cleaning before moving on to component checks for the three-beep condition.

Use the cleaning sheet or procedure for your exact machine, including its specified cleaner and sanitizer. Keep cleaning chemicals and contaminated water from contacting ice intended for consumption. Do not assume that a cleaner or sanitizer used on another machine is suitable; confirm compatibility in the model’s documentation.
What a three-beep alarm means on a KM cuber
Hoshizaki’s KM cuber FAQ describes a three-beep alarm after two consecutive maximum-length freeze cycles in which the float switch has not opened to initiate harvest. During normal operation, the falling reservoir water level opens the float switch and starts harvest. If that does not happen across consecutive cycles, backup timing and a safety alarm come into play.

- Outdoor Use Approved – UL-approved for outdoor use, this icemaker can be placed in patios or outdoor kitchens, offering versatility for various environments.
For this KM-specific condition, Hoshizaki’s guidance directs technicians to clean the machine, then check float-switch operation, inlet-water-valve leakage, and control-board behavior. These are component-diagnosis steps, not a universal interpretation of three beeps across Hoshizaki products. Find the exact model’s alarm description before acting on a beep pattern.
Know when troubleshooting becomes service work
Stop at visible operating checks and model-directed cleaning if diagnosis would require opening electrical compartments, testing live voltage, handling refrigerant, or working near moving parts. Hoshizaki’s C-100BAF service manual states: “This unit should be diagnosed and repaired only by qualified service personnel to reduce the risk of death, electric shock, serious injury, or fire.” That warning is for the service manual’s model, but the manual’s hazards illustrate why internal diagnosis should be left to trained service personnel.

Use the exact model’s service documentation and contact an authorized service representative if the alarm returns after the prescribed cleaning, the manual identifies a service condition, or the fault requires electrical or refrigeration diagnosis. Do not attempt to probe energized equipment or bypass a safety control.

Hoshizaki’s C-100BAF(-DS)(-AD)(-ADDS) service manual gives a model-specific production-check method: operate the machine for 10 to 20 minutes, collect ice for 10 minutes, then multiply the batch weight by 144. This is a service-manual procedure for those C-100BAF variants, not a general owner test or a production target for other Hoshizaki machines. Follow the manual’s conditions and safety requirements, or ask a qualified technician to perform the check.
