What the X8S supports
Honeywell Home and Resideo list the X8S as Matter-certified and compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home. Matter is intended for cross-platform thermostat control, including the functions specifically documented in the quick guide:

Matter does not automatically expose every X8S feature in every platform. Advanced functions such as schedules, air-quality controls, occupancy behavior, reports and HVAC alerts may depend on the First Alert by Resideo app or the capabilities of the chosen Matter controller.
How Ring integration works
Resideo says the X8S can show a live stream from compatible Ring streaming doorbells and support two-way conversation through its 5-inch touchscreen. This makes the thermostat a convenient front-door viewer and intercom when it is installed in a useful location.

The Ring connection is not described as a Matter feature. The X8S quick guide gives separate setup paths:
- Ring video: Pair the compatible doorbell through the First Alert by Resideo app.
- Matter: Pair the thermostat with a Matter controller from the thermostat’s Matter menu.
Honeywell’s wording is limited to compatible Ring streaming doorbells. Do not assume that every Ring doorbell, Ring camera, Ring Chime or Ring Alarm feature will work. The published information also does not confirm that the X8S can unlock a smart lock, arm or disarm Ring Alarm, review recordings, change Ring settings or display every Ring camera.
How to connect a Ring doorbell
- Install or open the First Alert by Resideo app.
- Add and configure the X8S thermostat in the app.
- Use the app’s video-doorbell connection process.
- Pair a compatible Ring doorbell, or the named First Alert VX1 device.
- Confirm that live video appears on the thermostat.
- Test two-way audio from the touchscreen.
The exact app labels may change, so use the current pairing flow shown in the First Alert by Resideo app. The Ring doorbell remains a separate product and may require its own Ring account. The available X8S documentation does not establish every account, subscription or firmware requirement.

- On the thermostat, touch Menu.
- Scroll down and select Matter.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- In the intended smart-home platform, scan the QR code displayed on the thermostat or enter the pairing code.
- Confirm that the X8S appears in the platform.
- Test a setpoint change and a system-mode change.
A compatible Matter controller or hub may be required, depending on the platform and hardware already installed in the home. Matter pairing does not replace the First Alert by Resideo setup required for the video-doorbell connection.
Installation requirements before buying
A C-wire is required
The X8S is hardwired and requires a C-wire for its continuous 24-volt power supply. Check the existing thermostat wiring before purchase. An unused wire behind the wall is not necessarily connected at the furnace or air handler.

A C-wire adapter may be suitable for some installations, but unusual wiring, heat pumps, multi-stage systems and accessory-heavy HVAC setups are better assessed by a qualified installer. Do not connect a new thermostat based only on the wire labels at the wall.
HVAC compatibility
Honeywell lists support for up to 4 heat/2 cool heat-pump systems and up to 3 heat/4 cool conventional systems. Supported modes include Heat, Off, Cool, Auto and Emergency Heat.

Staging, accessories and proprietary or communicating systems can change the requirements. Check Honeywell’s compatibility information or consult an HVAC professional before replacing the existing thermostat.
Network requirements
The product specifications list 2.4- and 5-GHz Wi-Fi. Both the thermostat and doorbell need reliable network connectivity for connected functions. Live video and two-way audio can fail or be delayed when the doorbell is offline, Wi-Fi coverage is weak or the internet connection is unavailable.
What to check before purchasing
- Verify that the exact Ring doorbell model is a supported streaming doorbell.
- Confirm that a usable C-wire is installed, or budget for an appropriate adapter or professional installation.
- Check that the HVAC system falls within the X8S wiring and staging requirements.
- Confirm that the thermostat will be located somewhere useful for seeing and answering the door.
- Decide whether visitors’ conversations should be audible in the room where the thermostat is mounted.
- Confirm the current Matter capabilities of the smart-home platform you plan to use.
Troubleshooting
The Ring doorbell does not appear
- Confirm that the doorbell is a compatible Ring streaming model.
- Check that it is online and viewable in the Ring app.
- Confirm that the X8S is configured in the First Alert by Resideo app.
- Update the First Alert and Ring apps.
- Restart the thermostat and doorbell.
- Run the video-doorbell pairing process again in the First Alert app.
- Check Wi-Fi reliability at both devices.
If an advertised compatible model still will not pair, contact Honeywell or Resideo support. Do not expect Matter troubleshooting to fix the video connection; the two integrations use different setup paths.

Matter pairing fails
- Verify that the selected platform has a Matter controller available.
- Return to Menu → Matter on the X8S.
- Display a new QR code or pairing code if the thermostat offers that option.
- Scan or enter the code from the intended Matter controller.
- Keep the thermostat and controller on the same local network during commissioning.
- Remove a failed or duplicate Matter connection from the platform if necessary, then retry.
While diagnosing Matter, the First Alert app remains the separate route for thermostat and video-doorbell functions.
Who should buy the X8S?
The X8S is a strong fit for a homeowner who wants a large touchscreen thermostat that can also serve as a Ring doorbell viewer, has a compatible HVAC system and can provide a C-wire. It is particularly useful when the thermostat is installed near a frequently occupied room or entryway.
Consider another thermostat if the priority is broad Ring ecosystem control rather than live video and two-way conversation, if the home lacks a C-wire and needs a simple DIY replacement, or if a complete model-specific Ring compatibility list is essential before buying. The X8S was announced at a U.S. MSRP of $219.99, though current pricing can change; the Ring doorbell is not included.
Bottom line
The Honeywell Home X8S can provide both Matter thermostat connectivity and compatible Ring doorbell video, but they should be treated as two independent integrations. Use Matter for supported thermostat controls through a smart-home platform, and use the First Alert by Resideo app to connect the Ring video doorbell. Verify the exact Ring model, C-wire availability and HVAC compatibility before purchasing.
