HomeKit Weekly: Must-have HomeKit gifts for the 2024 holiday season

The best HomeKit gift depends on the recipient’s Apple setup, installation constraints, hub requirements, and privacy expectations. Here is how to choose wisely.

The safest HomeKit gifts are smart plugs and bulbs; the most useful—but riskiest—are smart locks, cameras, and doorbells. Choose the category first, then confirm the recipient’s Apple Home setup, hub requirements, installation constraints, privacy expectations, and regional availability.

This guide revisits the recommendations in the November 29, 2024 9to5Mac HomeKit holiday guide. It is a historical 2024 gift guide, not a verified 2026 product ranking. Prices, availability, firmware, and feature support may have changed.

Quick picks by recipient

Recipient Best gift type Why it works Main warning
HomeKit beginner Smart plug or bulb Inexpensive, reversible, and simple to automate Check the socket, load rating, and Wi-Fi or Matter requirements
Apple enthusiast and homeowner Home Key smart lock Unlocking with an iPhone or Apple Watch is convenient Door geometry and installation must be checked first
Family with guests Keypad or fingerprint lock Guests and children do not need an Apple device Home Key alone may not solve guest access
Renter Bulb, indoor plug, or reversible lock retrofit Usually avoids rewiring or permanent changes Get landlord approval for locks, cameras, or exterior hardware
Privacy-conscious household HKSV-compatible or local-storage camera Recording and access can be chosen more deliberately Apple Home compatibility does not automatically mean HKSV support
Google Nest household Starling Home Hub Can bridge supported Nest devices into Apple Home It is unnecessary without Google or Nest hardware

What “HomeKit-compatible” actually means

“Works with Apple Home” is not one technical category. Before buying, identify which of these applies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Native Apple Home support: the accessory connects directly to Apple Home using its supported HomeKit or Apple Home integration.
  • Matter support: the product uses the cross-platform Matter standard. Matter can make a device more flexible across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and other platforms, but it does not guarantee that every manufacturer feature appears in Apple Home.
  • Hub-mediated support: the accessory requires a manufacturer hub. Aqara products, for example, may need an Aqara hub for particular remote-control, automation, or Matter functions.
  • Limited Apple Home support: basic control, viewing, motion detection, or status may be available while advanced features remain in the manufacturer’s app.
  • HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV): this is separate from simply viewing a camera in Apple Home. HKSV affects supported recording, notifications, analysis, and iCloud+ storage arrangements.
  • Manufacturer-only support: some smart-home products work only through their own app or another platform.

A Matter logo or an Apple Home badge should therefore be treated as a starting point, not proof that the product will deliver the exact experience the recipient wants.

#1 Best Overall
TP-Link Tapo Matter Supported Smart Plug Mini, Compact Design, 15A/1800W Max, Super Easy Setup, Works with Apple Home, Alexa & Google Home, UL Certified, 2.4G Wi-Fi Only, White, Tapo P125M(3-Pack)
  • 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
  • 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline. Matter allows effective communication directly between devices, without the need for a specific 'forwarding' device. For example, a Matter smart switch or sensor can turn on/off a Matter bulb directly without being connected to a cloud service, or other specific action. Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
  • 【Matter: Future-Proofing】Matter devices will be compatible with future updates and advancements in technology, ensuring that your smart home system remains up-to-date and compatible with new devices and features.
  • 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.
  • 【App & Voice Control】Control your WiFi smart plug from anywhere, anytime via the free Tapo App or just give voice commands to Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Samsung SmartThings. Your favorite smart assistant enables you to have a truly hands-free experience.

Check these details before buying

  1. Apple devices: Does the recipient use an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple TV?
  2. Home hub: Do they already have a compatible Apple home hub for remote access and automations?
  3. Manufacturer hub: Does the accessory need Aqara, Eufy, Starling, or another vendor hub?
  4. Connection type: Is it Wi-Fi, Thread, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, or a combination?
  5. Feature target: Is the buyer seeking Home Key, HKSV, energy monitoring, guest codes, package detection, or merely on/off control?
  6. Physical compatibility: Check the door, deadbolt, backset, door thickness, electrical socket, bulb base, wiring, weather exposure, and Wi-Fi range.
  7. Recurring costs: Confirm whether cloud recording, remote access, storage, or advanced features require a subscription.
  8. Privacy: Ask whether indoor cameras, vendor clouds, microphones, or third-party bridges are acceptable.
  9. Installation: A bulb or plug is usually reversible. A lock, doorbell, or outdoor camera may require tools, drilling, wiring, or landlord permission.
  10. Return policy: For locks and doorbells, buy where returns are practical if the hardware does not fit.

Smart locks: the premium Apple Home gift

Smart locks are impressive gifts, but they are not safe blind purchases. The recipient’s deadbolt, door alignment, backset, frame, clearance, and preferred entry methods matter more than the Apple Home logo.

Level Lock+

The 2024 guide’s Level Lock+ recommendation suits an Apple-focused homeowner who values discreet hardware and Apple Home Key. Its concealed design is intended to look more like a traditional lock, while Home Key can allow entry with an iPhone or Apple Watch. It also retains a traditional-key backup and supports NFC-style access methods described by the source guide.

Buy it when: appearance and Apple convenience matter most, and the recipient is comfortable relying on a compatible Apple device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose it blindly when: the household needs a visible keypad, fingerprint access, or easy entry for people without Apple devices. Verify the exact model, current availability, regional Home Key support, and door compatibility before purchase. The 2024 recommendation should not be treated as proof of a current 2026 ranking.

Aqara U100

The Aqara U100 is the more feature-heavy choice in this group. Aqara lists Apple Home and Home Key support, iPhone and Apple Watch unlocking, fingerprint access, passcodes, a mechanical key, and USB-C emergency charging. Its official page lists support for up to 50 fingerprints, an IP65 rating for the outer panel, and a battery estimate of up to eight months under stated usage conditions.

Its keypad and fingerprint reader make it better suited to families, cleaners, contractors, and guests who may not use Apple devices. However, some remote, automation, and Matter functions require an Aqara hub. The lock is therefore not necessarily a complete hub-free gift.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose it blindly when: the buyer has not checked the door hardware or assumes the lock’s full feature set works without an Aqara hub.

August Smart Lock

The fourth-generation August Smart Lock is the retrofit-oriented option. Its interior installation can preserve the exterior portion of an existing deadbolt, which may reduce visible changes and simplify some installations. August describes remote lock and unlock, door-status checking, guest keys, and activity visibility.

The important trade-off is that the 2024 guide identifies this model as lacking Apple Home Key. It may suit a homeowner who wants app-based smart access while retaining existing exterior hardware, but it is not the right gift for someone specifically asking to tap an iPhone or Apple Watch at the door.

Home Key is not the same as universal access

Home Key is excellent for Apple users, but a keypad, fingerprint reader, NFC credential, or mechanical key may be more practical for a mixed household. Before choosing a lock, decide how children, guests, cleaners, contractors, and family members will enter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every lock should also have a backup plan: a physical key, emergency power method, or another documented entry route. Battery estimates vary with usage, temperature, connectivity, and firmware. Smart-home compatibility does not by itself prove burglary resistance; the lock grade, strike plate, door frame, installation quality, and overall door construction still matter.

HomeKit cameras and doorbells

Cameras need more qualification than almost any other HomeKit gift. A camera may appear in Apple Home for live viewing or motion automation without supporting HomeKit Secure Video. It may also keep important features—such as detailed detection, local storage controls, or two-way audio—in its own app.

Indoor cameras

The 2024 guide highlights Eve Cam as an indoor option, particularly for an Apple household interested in HKSV. Before buying, verify the exact model’s current HKSV support and the recipient’s iCloud+ arrangement. Also discuss whether the household is comfortable with an indoor camera, microphone, cloud processing, and shared access.

A camera can do more than record: motion may trigger lights, notifications, or other automations. That usefulness must be balanced against privacy. A camera is a poor gift if household members have not agreed where it will be placed and who can access it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outdoor cameras

  • Eve Outdoor Camera: A floodlight-replacement format for a location with permanent power. It is better suited to a homeowner who can replace or wire an existing exterior light.
  • Logitech Circle View: A wired outdoor approach for buyers who prefer continuous power and can route or protect the cable.
  • Eufy 2C: A battery-powered option with local recording at a base station, as described by the 2024 source guide. The guide cites up to 180 days of battery life, but that is not a universal result. Motion volume, temperature, signal strength, recording settings, and firmware can change battery life substantially.

Outdoor placement also requires weather exposure, mounting, Wi-Fi range, lighting, and power checks. Battery cameras may be convenient but commonly trade continuous recording for longer intervals between charges. Confirm whether the buyer wants live viewing, event recording, local storage, HKSV, or a manufacturer subscription.

Video doorbells

The 2024 list includes the Logitech Doorbell and Aqara Video Doorbell G4. These are installation-sensitive gifts. Check whether the home has suitable wiring, whether the existing chime is compatible, whether a battery configuration is available, and whether the recipient needs visitor announcements, package detection, two-way audio, privacy zones, local storage, or HKSV.

A doorbell may need a vendor hub or subscription depending on the model and desired features. Verify current Apple Home and HKSV behavior for the exact product before purchase; do not assume that a product named in a 2024 guide has unchanged availability or feature support in 2026.

Smart bulbs: easy gifts with predictable pitfalls

The 2024 recommendations include VOCOlinc, Meross, OREiN, and Yeelight bulbs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by use case:

  • Starter gift: a white or tunable-white bulb for a lamp or bedroom.
  • Ambiance: a color bulb for scenes, parties, or accent lighting.
  • Cross-platform flexibility: a Matter or Thread model, provided the exact model supports the required Apple Home features and the home has the necessary border router or hub.
  • Renter-friendly upgrade: bulbs that do not require rewiring.

The most common bulb failure is a wall switch left off. Once power is cut, the bulb disappears from Apple Home. If the recipient wants reliable physical wall control, a smart dimmer or switch may be a better gift. Also check the bulb base, dimensions, wattage, brightness, enclosed-fixture restrictions, and whether the fixture’s existing switch will remain on.

Smart bulbs are not always the best answer for a lamp. If the recipient only wants scheduled on/off control, a smart plug can be cheaper and less disruptive. If they want dimming from the wall, choose a compatible smart switch instead.

Smart plugs: the lowest-risk HomeKit gift

Smart plugs are often the best choice when the buyer does not know the recipient’s smart-home setup. The 2024 guide lists options from Meross, VOCOlinc, Eve, Wemo, Kasa, and others, including Matter, Thread, energy-monitoring, and outdoor categories.

A plug can automate a lamp, schedule a device, simulate occupancy while the recipient is away, or provide simple Siri control without replacing a bulb. Energy-monitoring models add consumption data; basic models may provide only on/off control.

Choose the right type

  • Indoor plug: for lamps and ordinary indoor loads within the manufacturer’s rating.
  • Outdoor plug: only when it is explicitly weather-rated and suitable for the intended exposure.
  • Matter plug: potentially useful in a multi-platform home, but confirm setup and feature parity.
  • Thread plug: confirm that the recipient has a compatible Thread border router or Apple home hub.
  • Energy-monitoring plug: useful for measuring supported loads, but not every model exposes the same information in Apple Home.

Never treat a smart plug as a general-purpose safety device. Check maximum load and appliance type. Be especially cautious with heaters, high-current motors, pumps, and anything that could create a fire risk. A plug controls electrical power; it cannot guarantee that an appliance will safely resume its prior operating mode after power is restored.

The original article contains a generic “outdoor smart plug” entry, but the available source text does not identify its exact model. Do not substitute an indoor model or claim a specific product without verifying that detail.

Specialized gifts

Starling Home Hub

Starling Home Hub is a specialized bridge for a household invested in Google Nest devices but seeking Apple Home integration. The 2024 source guide says it can bring supported Google accessories into HomeKit, including HKSV-related integration.

It is a poor gift for a household with no Nest hardware, for someone who wants only native Apple products, or for a buyer uncomfortable maintaining a third-party bridge. It also should not be presented as a guarantee that every Nest feature will appear in Apple Home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other useful alternatives

  • Smart dimmer or switch: better than bulbs when physical wall control matters.
  • Smart plug: better than a bulb when only on/off automation is needed.
  • Keypad lock: better than a Home Key-only lock for mixed-device households.
  • Local-storage camera: useful for minimizing recurring cloud services, though Apple Home integration may differ.
  • Door sensor: a lower-risk way to add open/closed status and automations without replacing the lock.

Gift ideas by budget tier

Use these as relative tiers rather than fixed prices. Product prices and holiday discounts change by country, retailer, and date.

  • Lower-cost gift: one smart bulb or indoor plug.
  • Small upgrade: a multi-pack, energy-monitoring plug, or compatible outdoor plug.
  • Midrange gift: a camera, doorbell accessory, hub, or a more capable lighting setup.
  • Premium gift: a smart lock or complete camera and doorbell installation.

Do not add a hub, batteries, mounting hardware, or subscription to the recipient’s costs unless it is genuinely required. For example, the Aqara U100’s full remote, automation, and Matter experience may require an Aqara hub, while a camera’s storage model may affect ongoing costs.

Final buying checklist

  • Confirm the exact model and country or region.
  • Confirm native Apple Home, Matter, hub-mediated, or limited support.
  • Verify Home Key separately from ordinary Apple Home support.
  • Verify HKSV separately from basic camera viewing.
  • Check whether an Apple home hub or vendor hub is required.
  • Check Wi-Fi, Thread, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and network requirements.
  • For locks, measure the deadbolt, backset, door thickness, alignment, and clearance.
  • For doorbells and outdoor cameras, check wiring, mounting, weather exposure, chime compatibility, and Wi-Fi range.
  • For bulbs, check base, size, wattage, fixture restrictions, and wall-switch behavior.
  • For plugs, check weather rating, maximum load, and appliance suitability.
  • Ask about privacy, local storage, cloud recording, subscriptions, and shared access.
  • Keep receipts and confirm the return policy.

For a recipient whose setup you cannot verify, choose a plug or bulb. Reserve locks, doorbells, and permanently wired cameras for buyers who can confirm the installation details first. That approach produces a less flashy gift than guessing—but a much better chance that the accessory will work on Christmas morning.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
