Improve home Wi-Fi in a practical order: check whether the problem affects one device or one area, reposition the router, then review bands and channels, security and firmware. If a particular room still has weak coverage, consider an extender or mesh system; neither can fix a slow internet connection coming into the home.
Start by finding where the problem is
A slow or unreliable Wi-Fi connection does not by itself prove that the router or internet provider is at fault. Results vary with the client device, its distance from the router, the frequency band it uses and the walls or other barriers in between. Google’s guidance for Nest and Google Wifi likewise identifies device, distance, band and obstacles as factors in performance: Google Home and Nest Help.

- Test the same device near the router, then in the room where Wi-Fi is troublesome. If it works well nearby but poorly in that room, local coverage is a likely factor.
- Compare with another device in the same locations. If only one device struggles, its Wi-Fi capability or settings may be involved.
- If all devices perform poorly even near the router, check the router’s status and your internet service before buying coverage equipment. This comparison helps locate the problem; it does not by itself identify its cause.
Improve the router’s location
Place the router as centrally as practical, elevated and in the open rather than on the floor or inside a cabinet. Walls, floors, metal objects and other obstructions can weaken or limit signal distribution. Microsoft recommends central placement away from walls and metal; TP-Link also identifies placement, barriers and interference as possible contributors to weak Wi-Fi. These are practical recommendations, not guarantees of a particular speed improvement.

- Try to avoid placing it near devices that may interfere with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, including microwaves and some cordless phones.
- After moving it, repeat the near-router and problem-room checks using the same devices.

Check Wi-Fi bands, channels and channel width
Routers and devices may use different frequency bands, and a device’s capabilities affect what it can connect to. A 6 GHz network can offer high performance close to the router, but it requires Wi-Fi 6E support on both the router and the client; many older devices do not support it. Don’t assume that selecting a newer band will help devices that cannot use it.
Compare 2.4 GHz channels
When a 2.4 GHz connection is unreliable, Microsoft suggests comparing channels 1, 6 and 11 and choosing the least crowded. Crowding varies by location, so check the available channel conditions if your router provides that information, change one setting at a time and retest. An automatic channel option may be available in the router’s settings.

Treat channel width as a targeted test
If the signal is strong and the channel is clear but reliability remains poor, Microsoft says trying 20 MHz channel width on 2.4 GHz may help compatibility with older adapters. It is a troubleshooting option, not a universal speed setting. Make one change, then check the affected device before deciding whether to keep it.

Secure the router and keep its software current
Use WPA3 Personal encryption when supported; WPA2 Personal is a suitable alternative. The Federal Trade Commission explains: “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.” Change default router-administrator and Wi-Fi passwords to unique credentials, and install current router software or firmware. - Turn off remote management, WPS and UPnP if you do not need them. A specific device or service may require a feature, so check that requirement before disabling it.
- If an older router still does not offer WPA2 or WPA3 after its software is updated, the FTC suggests considering a replacement.
NIST’s September 2024 publication, IR 8425A, Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products, provides standards-oriented cybersecurity context for consumer routers; it is not a consumer setup checklist.

Choose an extender, mesh system or replacement only if the checks point there
Once placement and settings have been checked, match any hardware change to the pattern of the problem. An extender may be worth considering for one persistent weak location when relocating the router is impractical. Mesh is a possible whole-home approach when several rooms or floors have coverage gaps. Compatibility with the existing router and client devices matters, and neither option guarantees faster internet service if the slowdown is upstream rather than local Wi-Fi coverage.
