A steam shower may fit into an existing shower footprint, but only if the enclosure and services can be adapted to contain moisture. A traditional sauna needs a separate, suitable location for its heated room and heater. Neither is automatically cheaper or easier: Angi’s US consumer guide, updated July 8, 2026, puts their installation estimates in overlapping ranges, while custom work and existing conditions can change the final cost substantially.

What is the difference between a home sauna and a steam shower?

A steam shower is an enclosed bathing area supplied by a steam generator. The generator heats water to produce steam, which travels through a steam line into the enclosure. The shower must be designed to manage the resulting moisture, including condensation on its interior surfaces.

A traditional sauna is a heated room, usually planned as a separate space or installed in a suitable location within the home. Its heater and room requirements depend on the selected system. An infrared cabin is a different product category; estimates and construction considerations for traditional saunas should not automatically be applied to infrared products.

The distinction matters because the projects solve different space and construction problems. A steam shower can sometimes be incorporated into a bathroom renovation, but it is not simply a regular shower with a generator added. A sauna does not require a steam-tight shower enclosure, but it does need a dedicated location that can accommodate the chosen room and heater.

X-Vcak Upgraded Portable Sauna for Home,Relaxation, Steam Sauna for Home with Steamer, Remote Control, Folding Chair, 9 Levels
  • The high-power steamer can quickly generate steam and shorten the preheating time. You can set the temperature and time on the steamer or with the remote control. X-Vcak home sauna has dry burning and leakage functions, allowing you to enjoy the sauna with more peace of mind.
  • The oversized steam room is suitable for adults of different sizes. You can stand or sit in it. The steam tent is equipped with a waterproof folding chair, allowing you to enjoy the sauna more comfortably.
  • There is a pocket inside the sauna room that can be used to store mobile phones and other small items. The zippered transparent window allows you to stick your head out for air at any time. The double pull zipper allows you to unzip and exit the steam room.
  • You can move the sauna tent to your room, living room, bathroom or other places for use. If you need to take the steam tent to a further location, it can also be folded for easy portability. With this portable sauna, you can steam at home anytime and anywhere, saving time in going to the steam room.

MrSteam’s construction guide puts the difference plainly: “A steam room, unlike a sauna, is a moist environment.” That line captures why the installation questions differ. Steam-shower planning centers on containing moisture and managing condensation; sauna planning centers on a suitable location for a heated room and its selected heater. The quote comes from MrSteam’s “Steam Room Construction & Generator Sizing Guide,” dated July 27, 2009, so check current equipment instructions when planning a project.

Quick comparison

Consideration Steam shower Traditional sauna
Space May use an existing or planned shower footprint if it can be adapted into a suitable steam enclosure. Needs a dedicated room or other suitable separate location.
Main construction question Can the enclosure be sealed and waterproofed, and can the generator and its services be accommodated? Where can the room go, and can that site support the selected heater and its requirements?
Angi installation estimate $2,800–$7,100; custom projects may reach $25,000. $2,500–$7,000; projects may reach $10,000.
Maintenance guidance Generator care varies with the model and water quality; the enclosure also needs normal cleaning and drying. Follow the selected sauna and heater instructions; the sources do not establish a universal maintenance schedule.

The cost figures are US consumer-guide estimates from Angi, updated July 8, 2026, not location-specific bids or a national survey of actual homeowner spending. They are best used to see that the published ranges overlap, not to predict which option will cost less in a particular home.

In short, compare two defined projects rather than treating “sauna” and “steam shower” as interchangeable upgrades. A shower conversion may depend on rebuilding an existing enclosure and routing generator connections. A sauna project depends on finding a suitable separate location and meeting the selected heater’s requirements. The product category, project scope, and condition of the home all matter.

How much space does each option need?

Steam shower: potentially the existing shower footprint

If a bathroom is already being renovated, the first question is whether the current or planned shower can be rebuilt as an enclosure suitable for steam. Reusing the footprint can reduce the need to find space for a separate room, but it does not establish that the existing enclosure is suitable. The work may involve rebuilding surfaces and adapting plumbing, electrical service, drainage, and the location of the generator.

The generator does not necessarily have to sit inside the bathing area. Steamist’s 2020 residential guide says its generator can be placed away from the shower, subject to the selected product’s installation requirements. That can help with layout, but the location still needs to be accessible for service and compatible with the product instructions. A qualified installer can assess where it can go and how its connections will reach the enclosure.

Think of “can it fit?” as two questions: can the bathing enclosure be made suitable for steam, and can the generator and its connections be placed and serviced appropriately? The apparent footprint alone does not answer either one. A shower that occupies the right amount of floor area may still need substantial changes to its interior surfaces, ceiling, seats, drainage, or services before it is an appropriate steam room.

Traditional sauna: plan for a dedicated location

A traditional sauna needs a suitable separate location for its heated room. Before settling on a room or site, identify the specific sauna and heater under consideration and check their requirements against the space and available services. The planning question is not just whether a room seems large enough: the selected system’s room, heater, ventilation, electrical, and clearance guidance needs to be considered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cost and construction guides do not provide universal sauna dimensions or heater specifications. Those depend on the chosen system, so avoid selecting a location based on a generic size assumption. Confirm the product requirements and have the site assessed before treating a potential location as feasible.

That dedicated-space requirement can be decisive for a household without an appropriate room or other suitable location. Conversely, someone with an available site may find that a sauna is the more direct concept to assess than rebuilding a bathroom. Neither observation establishes a universal winner: the dimensions, heater guidance, electrical service, ventilation considerations, and local requirements still need to be checked for the actual product and site.

What construction work does a steam shower require?

The enclosure is the defining construction challenge. MrSteam’s construction and sizing guide, dated July 27, 2009, describes a steam room as a “moist environment” and recommends completely sealed, waterproof interior surfaces. Its guidance also calls for a sloped ceiling and seats so condensation drains, a floor drain, and a generator location protected from damage but accessible for service.

These are manufacturer recommendations from a dated guide, not a substitute for current instructions for a selected generator or applicable local requirements. They do, however, show why a standard shower conversion cannot be assumed to be a simple equipment swap. Surfaces, water management, service access, and the generator’s connections need to be considered together.

  • 【Convenient Design】 The sauna room is equipped with a bookshelf, a towel rack and a cup holder, allowing you to read and replenish water while taking a sauna. There is a ventilation hole at the top to allow fresh air to flow and reduce the feeling of stuffiness.

Each recommendation points to a practical question for a design or installation conversation. Ask how the interior surfaces will be sealed and waterproofed, how condensation will drain from the ceiling and seats, where water will go, and how the generator can be reached if it needs service. These are not cosmetic details: they are part of making the enclosure and equipment work as a coordinated installation.

Plan the generator and its connections

Steamist’s 2020 residential guide says its generator requires 240-volt electricity, a water connection, and a steam line. Those are product-specific details, not universal specifications for every steam generator. Confirm the current requirements for the model being considered, including its service access and permitted placement, before committing to a layout.

MrSteam’s guide says generator sizing depends on the steam-room’s cubic footage, surface materials and their thermal properties, ceiling height, exposure to exterior walls, and available voltage. In practical terms, sizing cannot be based on footprint alone: the enclosure’s volume and construction conditions matter too. The guide is dated 2009, so use it as a planning checklist and verify sizing against current product documentation.

This is one reason to identify a model before finalizing the layout. The generator is not a complete steam shower by itself: it has to be appropriate for the room and connect to the enclosure and the home’s services. A larger-than-expected volume, particular surface materials, ceiling height, or exterior-wall exposure may affect sizing, according to MrSteam’s guide. Do not assume that a generator selected from a rough floor-area estimate will suit the finished space.

Steamist’s guide also describes conversion of an existing tub or shower as conditional on the circumstances and recommends advice from a qualified professional with plumbing and electrical experience. Treat a conversion as a feasibility question to resolve on site, not a guaranteed way to reuse every existing fixture or connection.

What do the installation costs include?

Angi’s US guide, “Steam Shower vs. Sauna: Which Is Best for Your Home Spa?”, updated July 8, 2026, reports these installation estimates:

Project Angi estimate (US; updated July 8, 2026)
Steam-shower installation $2,800–$7,100; custom projects may reach $25,000.
Sauna installation $2,500–$7,000; projects may reach $10,000.

Angi’s ranges are estimates in a consumer guide, not quotes for a specific home. They do not establish average spending by homeowners, and they do not show that one system is consistently less expensive. A project’s scope and existing conditions affect what work is needed; local pricing also depends on location and labor.

The published ranges overlap substantially: the steam-shower estimate starts only slightly above the sauna estimate, and both extend into several-thousand-dollar territory. The upper figures also differ, with Angi noting that custom steam-shower projects may reach $25,000 and sauna projects may reach $10,000. Those upper-end figures are not promises, caps, or a prediction for a particular home; they reinforce that custom scope can change the total.

For a meaningful comparison, request written estimates that use the same scope. A steam-shower quote should make clear what is included for the enclosure, generator, plumbing and electrical work, finishes, demolition, permits, and repairs. A sauna quote should identify the room or cabin, heater, electrical work, ventilation, finishes, permits, and any site preparation or repair. These are scope items to clarify with bidders; the estimates do not establish that every project includes them.

Custom work can move a project far beyond the lower part of a published range. For a steam shower, the enclosure and the services needed to support it are central to the scope. For a sauna, the selected room, heater, and site conditions need to be assessed. Compare the itemized work rather than choosing from the two headline ranges alone.

When reviewing bids, look for omissions as well as line items. One estimate may include a complete enclosure or cabin while another covers only equipment and installation. One contractor may account for demolition, repairs, permits, or finish work while another lists them as exclusions or allowances. Ask bidders to identify exactly what they have priced and what could change after opening walls or evaluating the site. The point is not to assume that any particular extra is required, but to make the competing scopes comparable.

For a steam shower, clarify how the bid handles the generator, enclosure construction, water and electrical connections, steam line, drainage, finishes, and service access. For a sauna, clarify what is included for the room or cabin, heater, electrical work, ventilation, finish work, and site preparation. Local permit requirements and labor rates cannot be inferred from Angi’s national consumer-guide figures; ask a local professional what applies to the address and scope.

What does maintenance involve?

Steam generator and enclosure

Steam-generator care depends partly on the water supply. MrSteam’s construction guide says mineral impurities affect flushing or filtration needs and suggests considering automatic flushing or filtration where water quality is poor. It does not establish one descaling interval for every generator or home. Follow the selected model’s current maintenance instructions and account for local water quality when planning upkeep.

Steamist describes its own system as “virtually maintenance-free.” That is a claim about its system, not a promise that all generators need no attention. It also does not remove the ordinary cleaning and drying needs of a bathroom enclosure. Keep equipment-specific care distinct from cleaning the shower surfaces.

If water quality is a concern, ask the installer or manufacturer how it affects the selected generator and whether that model calls for flushing, filtration, or another specific care routine. An automatic flush feature or filter may be relevant for some equipment and water conditions, but it should not be treated as a universal accessory or substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions. Any filter or accessory needs to be compatible with the chosen system.

Also distinguish generator maintenance from ordinary bathroom upkeep. Steam exposure does not remove the need to clean the enclosure, and the generator’s care instructions do not automatically describe how to clean every finish. Ask what the product maker recommends for both the equipment and the surfaces selected for the room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Traditional sauna and heater

The sources for this comparison do not establish a universal maintenance schedule for traditional saunas. Maintenance depends on the selected sauna and heater, so use their instructions rather than applying a schedule from another product. Ask the installer what routine checks and care apply to the exact system being quoted.

A maintenance comparison is most useful when it is tied to a specific model, not when it relies on broad labels such as “low-maintenance.” Ask for the owner’s instructions before purchase, confirm what routine upkeep is expected, and find out whether any care depends on the installation conditions. The sauna and heater maker’s guidance is the relevant reference for that equipment; a steam-generator maintenance claim should not be carried over to it.

Which one is more practical for your home?

Start with a steam shower if you are already renovating a bathroom

If the bathroom is already part of a renovation, ask the contractor to assess whether the existing or planned shower can be built as a suitable steam enclosure. Confirm the enclosure approach, the generator’s location and service access, and the connections required by the specific model. This is a feasibility question, not an assumption that every shower can be converted.

It is especially useful to raise the question while the bathroom scope is being planned, so the enclosure, generator location, and utility requirements can be assessed together. A seemingly convenient footprint is only one part of the decision. If the shower must be substantially rebuilt or the equipment cannot be placed appropriately, the initial assumption that steam will be a simple add-on may not hold.

Start with a sauna if you have a suitable separate location

If you prefer a traditional sauna and have a potential room or other appropriate site, identify the system you would install and check its requirements against that location. Get the heater and room requirements reviewed alongside electrical service and any ventilation or clearance considerations in the selected product guidance.

Do not select the sauna solely by a general estimate or an assumed generic room size. Establish which room or cabin and heater are being considered, then have the site reviewed against that system’s instructions. If there is no appropriate separate location, that is a real constraint to resolve before comparing prices.

Use professional assessment before setting a budget

Have a qualified installer assess the enclosure or proposed sauna site, utility connections, and local requirements. Steamist’s 2020 guide specifically advises consulting a qualified professional with plumbing and electrical experience when considering a tub or shower conversion. Local feasibility, permit requirements, and costs cannot be resolved from broad published estimates without a location and site assessment.

Professional input is not just a final check on a preferred option. It can help determine whether a proposed project is feasible, what work it actually involves, and which requirements need to be included in a quote. The right specialist will depend on the scope, but the assessment should be specific to the home, product, and local rules rather than based only on a broad cost range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health or medical suitability is a separate question from whether a room can be built and what it may cost. The cost and construction guidance discussed here does not establish health benefits or determine whether either option is appropriate for a person’s medical circumstances. Anyone with health concerns should seek relevant clinical advice rather than relying on a home-improvement comparison.

A practical way to compare quotes

  1. Choose the project scope. Decide whether you are planning a steam shower as part of a bathroom renovation or a traditional sauna in a separate location. Do not compare a partial equipment allowance with a complete installed project.
  2. Identify the actual system. Get the selected generator or sauna-and-heater documentation so the installer can check product requirements rather than assume generic specifications.
  3. Ask for a site assessment. Have the contractor review the enclosure or room, services, drainage or ventilation considerations, service access, and local requirements relevant to the project.
  4. Request itemized, like-for-like bids. Ask each bidder to specify included equipment, construction, utility work, finishes, demolition, permits, and repairs. Record exclusions as well as included work.
  5. Compare lifecycle responsibilities. Ask what maintenance the selected equipment requires, who will explain it at handover, and whether local water quality changes steam-generator care.

That process turns the broad Angi figures into a more useful decision: a comparison of two defined projects for one home, with the site conditions and included work visible.

It can also expose why two bids for the same option differ. A contractor may be pricing a different generator or heater, a different amount of enclosure or room work, or a different set of utility and finish items. Rather than treating the lowest total as self-explanatory, reconcile those differences and ask whether each bidder has assessed the same conditions.

Questions to settle before choosing

  • Can the existing or planned shower be rebuilt as a properly sealed, waterproof steam enclosure?
  • Where can the selected steam generator be installed so that its connections and service access work?
  • Is there a suitable separate location for the sauna and its selected heater?
  • What changes to electrical service, plumbing, drainage, ventilation, finishes, or the surrounding room are included in each quote?
  • Which local requirements and permits apply to the specific project?
  • What maintenance does the exact equipment manufacturer require, given the home’s water quality?

Sources and scope

The price ranges above are from Angi’s US consumer guide, “Steam Shower vs. Sauna: Which Is Best for Your Home Spa?”, updated July 8, 2026. MrSteam’s construction and sizing guide is dated July 27, 2009, and Steamist’s residential product guide is from 2020; their specifications and recommendations are manufacturer-specific and should be checked against current product documentation. Badeloft’s vendor-authored planning guide, published September 20, 2026, also frames the difference between steam enclosures and sauna spaces, but it is not a substitute for applicable code or an installer’s design. Costs, permit requirements, and feasibility for a particular home remain dependent on location, project scope, selected equipment, and site assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn my existing shower into a steam shower?

Sometimes, but it depends on whether the enclosure can be rebuilt or adapted as a suitable steam environment and whether the generator and its connections can be accommodated. Steamist’s 2020 residential guide treats conversion as conditional and recommends advice from a qualified professional with plumbing and electrical experience. Have the enclosure, services, drainage, and generator location assessed before assuming the existing shower can be reused.

Does a home sauna need its own room?

A traditional sauna needs a dedicated room or other suitable separate location for its heated room and heater. The exact space and service requirements depend on the selected sauna and heater, so check that product’s guidance and have the proposed site assessed. Infrared cabins are a different product category and should not be assumed to share traditional-sauna requirements.

Which costs more to install: a sauna or a steam shower?

Angi’s US consumer guide, updated July 8, 2026, estimates steam-shower installation at $2,800–$7,100, with custom projects potentially reaching $25,000, and sauna installation at $2,500–$7,000, with projects potentially reaching $10,000. The ranges overlap and are not quotes for a specific home or a measure of average homeowner spending. Compare written bids with the same scope and local site conditions.

How much maintenance does a steam shower need?

It depends on the generator model and water quality, as well as ordinary cleaning of the enclosure. MrSteam’s guide says mineral impurities affect flushing or filtration needs, but it does not set a universal descaling schedule. Follow the chosen model’s current instructions. Steamist’s “virtually maintenance-free” description applies to its own system and should not be generalized to every generator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask an installer before choosing?

Ask whether the shower can be made into a suitable steam enclosure or whether the sauna site meets the selected system’s requirements. Have the installer review equipment specifications, electrical and plumbing connections, drainage or ventilation considerations, service access, and local requirements. Request itemized quotes that identify included equipment, construction, utility work, finishes, demolition, permits, repairs, and exclusions.

The Bottom Line

A steam shower may work within a bathroom renovation’s shower footprint, but only if the enclosure, generator location, and services can support it. A traditional sauna needs a suitable separate location and a site that meets the selected heater’s requirements. Angi’s US estimates overlap, so neither option is reliably cheaper from the headline ranges alone. Get a professional site assessment and compare itemized, like-for-like quotes before deciding.
