Tile is no longer confined to a narrow strip behind the range. In 2026, homeowners are using it to add warmth and texture, connect an open-plan kitchen with adjacent rooms, define work and dining zones, and carry a visual floor or wall language toward outdoor areas. The safest mainstream choice remains rectangular tile in a horizontal-brick layout, while scalloped, wave, mosaic, herringbone, terracotta and large-format porcelain offer more distinctive directions. The right choice depends on whether you want grout to disappear, a pattern to lead the room, or tile to establish continuity between spaces. Color is warming too, with neutrals still dominant and greens, blues, earthy reds, browns and creams providing controlled contrast.

What tile is trending for kitchens in 2026?

The 2026 kitchen trend is a broader use of tile: familiar rectangular backsplashes remain the baseline, while tactile shapes, warmer colors and larger surfaces push tile into floors, feature walls and adjoining living areas. Houzz’s 2025 study found rectangular tile in 68% of new or upgraded kitchen backsplashes, with horizontal-brick installation leading at 41%. That makes a ceramic subway tile backsplash a dependable reference point rather than an outdated choice.

More directional looks are gaining attention. Houzz reported that searches for scalloped tile more than tripled in 2026, wave-tile searches rose 38%, and terracotta-flooring searches rose 55%. Search growth indicates rising interest, not universal adoption, so these formats work best when their shape and maintenance suit the room.

How the main shapes compare

Format or layout Visual effect Best use Watch for
Rectangular, horizontal brick Familiar rhythm with restrained movement Full-height or standard backsplash where cabinetry and counters should remain the focus Alignment at corners, outlets and transitions
Scalloped tile Soft, curved edge and decorative shadow A contained backsplash, vanity wall or niche More cuts and grout; the curved edge needs a clean termination
Wave tile Handcrafted movement and changing highlights A focal backsplash or living-room feature surface Uneven relief can complicate cleaning and trim details
Mosaic or herringbone Pattern becomes the feature Small zones, alcoves and areas where a decorative statement is wanted More grout joints and a higher layout-and-installation burden
Large-format porcelain or slab Quiet surface with fewer visual breaks Open-plan floors, fireplace surrounds and expansive walls Handling, substrate flatness, movement joints and specialist installation

Are subway tiles still in style?

Yes. Rectangular tile and horizontal-brick placement remain the most common documented backsplash choices, so subway tile still provides the visual language most buyers recognize. Its current role is as a flexible foundation: changing the color, glaze, grout, scale or installation height can make the same basic shape feel traditional, contemporary or deliberately handmade.

For a ceramic subway tile backsplash, confirm the actual dimensions rather than relying on the nominal name, order from the same shade lot, and check the manufacturer’s water-absorption, cleaning and installation guidance. A contrasting grout makes the brick pattern prominent; a closely matched grout lets cabinetry, stone or wood take visual priority.

Which colors work with wood cabinets and warm interiors?

Warmth is returning without eliminating restraint. The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2025 survey identified neutrals as popular with 96% of respondents, greens with 86% and blues with 78%. Houzz also reported increased interest in rust, chocolate brown, mushroom, sage, taupe and cream. These figures describe professional expectations and search behavior, not a guarantee that every home will suit every color.

Match color to the existing room

  • Light or honey wood: mushroom, cream, soft taupe and muted sage can add depth without creating a sharp temperature clash.
  • Medium oak: blue-green, clay, rust and subdued blue provide contrast while retaining an earthy connection.
  • Dark walnut: warm cream, pale stone or desaturated green keeps the room from becoming visually heavy; strong chocolate shades need sufficient daylight.
  • Mixed daylight: test samples in morning, afternoon and artificial light because glaze and undertone can change noticeably.

Terracotta, rust and brown tiles can make a kitchen feel grounded, but they are harder to change than paint. Use them in a defined floor or backsplash area when you want a long-term anchor, and keep adjacent finishes simple enough to accommodate seasonal décor.

Should I choose large-format porcelain or smaller backsplash tile?

Choose based on visual continuity, installation conditions and cleaning priorities. Large-format porcelain reduces grout lines and can make an open room feel calmer; smaller tile offers scale, pattern and easier adjustment around outlets, corners and irregular walls.

Decision factor Large-format porcelain Smaller tile
Visual continuity Fewer joints create a broad, quiet field Joints add texture and a visible module
Open-plan floors Can help one material run between kitchen and living zones Can define the kitchen or dining area through pattern or border
Walls and backsplashes Slabs or oversized panels minimize grout maintenance More adaptable around penetrations and detailed layouts
Installation Requires careful handling, a flat substrate and appropriate equipment Usually more manageable, but intricate patterns increase layout time
Design emphasis Stone-look veining, color and scale carry the design Shape, glaze, relief and grout carry the design

Porcelain is not automatically suitable for every location. Verify the product’s slip rating for floors, water and heat suitability, thickness, edge treatment and substrate requirements. The manufacturer’s instructions and local building requirements take precedence over a trend report.

How can tile connect an open-plan kitchen and living room?

Use one tile language where you want continuity, then change scale, direction or border where you need a zone. Minoli’s 2026 report describes porcelain as a tool for both open-plan flow and deliberate zoning, including coordinated interior and exterior ranges that can extend a floor language toward patios or other outdoor living areas.

Three practical layout strategies

  1. Run one floor through the shared space. Continue the same tile across the kitchen and living area, aligning joints with major walls where possible. This makes the rooms read as one volume, but requires a product appropriate for every exposure and a movement-joint plan.
  2. Keep the material, change the pattern. Use the same color family with a different orientation or border to mark the kitchen work zone without introducing a competing finish.
  3. Use a threshold deliberately. A transition at an island, dining edge or door can separate functions cleanly when continuous flooring would create awkward cuts or conflict with existing floors.

For indoor-outdoor continuity, check that the interior and exterior products have compatible color, scale and joint alignment, but do not assume they share the same slip, frost or drainage performance. Outdoor specifications must be confirmed separately.

Where does tile work in a living room?

Tile can establish a living-room focal point around a fireplace, on an entry transition, across a feature wall or at an indoor-outdoor threshold. Houzz’s broader 2026 design reporting describes professionals layering warm wood, earthy colors, natural materials, multiple textures and handcrafted tile to create rooms with character and a sense of history.

Use relief or irregular handmade-looking tile where changing light is an advantage. Large-format porcelain or a slab is often better when the goal is a quiet fireplace surround with minimal grout. For a feature wall, resolve outside corners, electrical boxes, mantel clearances and the top termination before ordering; those details determine whether the installation looks intentional.

What should I check before ordering or installing trend-led tile?

Trend appeal does not replace technical suitability. Confirm the following for the specific product and room:

How much should a tile-led kitchen remodel cost?

Tile is only one part of a remodel budget. Houzz reported median spending of $55,000 for major kitchen remodels and $20,000 for minor remodels in 2025. Those are project-level medians, not tile prices, and actual costs vary with geography, demolition, cabinets, labor, substrate repairs, plumbing and electrical work. A complicated pattern or large-format installation can raise labor and preparation costs even when the tile itself is moderately priced.

Budget separately for demolition and disposal, surface preparation, waterproofing where required, tile and setting materials, trim, installation, sealing when specified, and contingency for concealed damage. Obtain a written scope that states tile dimensions, layout, grout, transitions and who supplies samples and spare material.

Why is tile becoming a whole-home material?

Kitchens are increasingly treated as social hubs rather than isolated workrooms. Bill Darcy, global president and CEO of NKBA | KBIS, described “the integration between the kitchen and whole home” as an opportunity for the kitchen and bath industry. NKBA found that 76% of respondents expect the kitchen footprint to increase over the next three years, which helps explain the demand for materials that can organize larger, more connected spaces.

The strongest approach is not to tile every surface. Decide first whether tile should unify rooms, mark a function, provide a durable surface or supply a focal point. Then choose shape, color, scale and grout so that the material supports that purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I test a tile color before committing to a full order?

Place samples vertically and horizontally beside the actual cabinet door, countertop and floor. View them in daylight and at night, and leave them in the room long enough to notice how changing light affects undertone and sheen.

What grout color makes a patterned tile easier to live with?

A grout close to the tile’s dominant color softens the pattern and is usually the least visually demanding. A contrasting grout emphasizes every joint, so use it only when the layout itself is meant to be a feature and confirm the grout’s cleaning requirements.

Can the same porcelain tile continue from the kitchen onto a patio?

Only if the interior and exterior versions are separately rated for their environments. Confirm slip resistance, frost performance, water management, thickness and installation details for the outdoor product rather than assuming a coordinated appearance means identical performance.

How much extra tile should I keep after installation?

Keep spare material from the original shade and caliber lot, especially for discontinued, handmade-looking or strongly patterned products. The installer can estimate an appropriate allowance from the room shape and layout, while future repairs may require more than the initial cutting waste.
