Home elevator vs. stair lift: which is right for your building?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a stairlift when the rider can safely transfer to a seat and your staircase can accept a suitable rail. Choose a home elevator when the rider must remain in a wheelchair, when several people or bulky items need to move between floors, or when a larger, automatic cabin justifies the structural work. The correct choice depends on transfer ability, stair geometry, clearances, rated capacity, construction scope, budget and local approval—not on a product photograph or a generic price. Arrange an in-home assessment before selecting equipment.

The short answer for a real building

A stairlift is a motorized seat that follows the stairs. It is usually the least disruptive option when one person can sit down, stand up at the destination, operate the controls and remain within the model’s rated capacity. The seat folds when parked, but the rail and folded unit still affect usable stair width and landing space.

A home elevator is an enclosed cabin that travels automatically in a hoistway. It can carry a wheelchair, a seated passenger, another person and, subject to its rating, household goods. It normally requires a more substantial project: structural openings or a shaft, landings, electrical work, finishes, permits and continuing service.

Neither label covers every vertical-transport project. A vertical or inclined platform lift may suit a wheelchair where an elevator is impractical, while a through-floor lift travels through a cut-out rather than a conventional hoistway. Each category has a different code classification, footprint and operating method.

Decision factor Stairlift tends to fit when… Elevator or platform-lift assessment tends to fit when…
User transfer The user can transfer onto and off a seat and use the controls safely, independently or with planned assistance. The user needs to remain in a wheelchair, cannot transfer reliably, or needs a larger platform or cabin.
Route A suitable rail can follow the stair run and leave safe clearance at landings. The project can provide a hoistway, floor opening or platform footprint with compliant landings.
Loads The rider and any permitted items are below the exact stairlift model’s rating. Cabin or platform dimensions and capacity accommodate the mobility device, occupants and intended goods.
Building work A localized installation to stairs, attachment points and power is acceptable. Structural, electrical, access, finish and permit work associated with the lift can be funded and scheduled.
Budget A straight configuration may be less expensive; a curved rail is custom. A site-specific quote can include the equipment, shaft or opening, building work, approvals and service.
Compliance The exact chairlift listing, applicable standard and local approval are confirmed. The elevator or platform-lift classification, adopted code, inspections and maintenance duties are confirmed.

This is a screening framework, not a substitute for a site survey. A qualified installer must verify the route, attachment, structure, power, clearances and local requirements.

What each system actually does

Stairlift

A stairlift carries one seated rider along a rail fixed to the stair treads or adjacent structure. The rider boards at one landing, fastens the restraint, operates a control and transfers off at the destination. It does not carry the rider’s wheelchair. If transferring is unsafe or impossible, a stairlift is the wrong category even if the staircase is technically suitable.

Home elevator

A residential elevator uses an enclosed cabin, automatic controls and a hoistway. The cabin can be sized for a wheelchair and attendant, but the required dimensions, door arrangement, travel and rated load are design-specific. A manufacturer describes 950 pounds as standard capacity for its home elevators and up to 1,400 pounds for its Zenith model; these are vendor-specific ratings, not a guarantee for every residential elevator.

Platform lift

A vertical or inclined platform lift carries a person on a wheelchair platform. It may work where a full elevator is not feasible, but its platform, travel, landings, guarding and controls must meet the applicable lift rules. Product-family examples show that a 36-by-48-inch platform can require a porch-lift footprint of at least 54 by 74 inches. That example is not a universal minimum.

Through-floor lift

A through-floor lift is a separate design, not a synonym for a home elevator. One model is described as traveling through a floor cut-out instead of a conventional hoistway and using press-to-run controls; its cited cut-out is just under 47 by 38 inches. Do not apply that opening to another model without written confirmation from the manufacturer and installer.

Start with the person’s movement, not the equipment

Observe a normal trip between floors and document what the user can do on a good day and a difficult day. The assessment should cover:

  • Keeping knees, feet, clothing and mobility aids clear of the stair and rail.
  • Travelling with an attendant, oxygen equipment, shopping or other necessary items.
  • What happens if the user reaches the destination but cannot transfer back safely.

A stairlift’s apparent simplicity can conceal a transfer problem: the chair solves the movement along the slope, not the movement from a wheelchair to the chair or from the chair to a room. A platform lift or elevator keeps the user on the wheelchair, but it introduces larger space, structural and compliance questions.

Stair geometry determines the stairlift design

Straight flights

Straight stairlifts are intended for one straight flight without a middle landing or turn. The rail can often be installed quickly after measurement, but the installer still must check tread condition, fixing points, landing approach, headroom and the path for other occupants.

Curves, turns and intermediate landings

Turns, curves and intermediate landings generally require a curved rail measured and made for that staircase. Custom manufacture is why curved equipment typically costs more. A rail that looks close in a photograph may still fail at a newel post, narrow winder, door swing or upper-floor landing.

Clearance while parked and travelling

Measure the clear stair width with the lift installed, not just the bare stair. Record the folded seat depth, armrest position, footrest projection, landing turning area and any door or hallway that opens onto the route. The prospective user should make a supervised trial run before the contract is finalized.

Check elevator and platform dimensions against the building

An elevator decision starts with the desired cabin, not the smallest possible shaft. Draw the wheelchair’s turning path, the attendant’s standing position, door swing or sliding-door pocket, landing approach and the route to each served room. Then add the structure needed around the hoistway, pit or overhead space, machine or drive equipment, fire separation, drainage where required, electrical supply and finishes.

For a platform lift, document platform width and length, travel height, entry and exit sides, ramp or threshold treatment, guard protection, landing gates and weather exposure. A product that fits on paper may still leave no compliant approach or turning area at the top and bottom.

Ask the designer to identify whether the proposed device is legally an elevator, platform lift, stairway chairlift or another class. The name used in a sales conversation does not determine the governing standard.

Construction scope: what changes in the house

Stairlift work

  • Inspect stair treads, stringers or adjacent wall structure for rail attachment.
  • Provide the manufacturer’s electrical supply and charging arrangement.
  • Protect or relocate trim, doors, radiators and handrails that conflict with the rail.
  • Verify both landings, emergency access and the ability to remove the unit for service.
  • Repair finishes only after the final rail position and stops are confirmed.

Elevator and platform-lift work

  • Survey foundations, floor framing, roof or ceiling height and the proposed shaft line on every level.
  • Design openings, headers, shaft walls, fire-resistance details and landing protection with the appropriate professional.
  • Coordinate electrical feeders, disconnects, lighting, communications and any backup-power equipment.
  • Plan waterproofing, drainage, weather protection and exterior foundations for an outside shaft or porch lift.
  • Allow for inspections, testing, finish carpentry, flooring transitions and future service access.

Construction drawings should show the equipment’s exact dimensions and loads. Do not reserve a generic closet and assume a cabin will fit later.

Cost: compare complete installed projects

There is no defensible market-wide price that makes one category universally cheaper. Straight stairlifts are generally less expensive than curved systems because curved rails are custom. A manufacturer gives an approximate starting point of $30,000 USD including local installation for one of its home elevators. That is a vendor-specific starting estimate, not an industry average, a fixed quote or a promise that structural work is included in every building.

Request itemized proposals using the same scope:

  • Equipment, controls, seats or platform and selected capacity.
  • Custom rail, shaft, pit, floor opening, foundation and structural reinforcement.
  • Electrical supply, battery or generator interface, lighting and communications.
  • Permits, plan review, inspections, testing and certificate requirements.
  • Demolition, patching, waterproofing, finishes and weather protection.
  • Delivery, installation, commissioning, user training and documentation.
  • Warranty exclusions, scheduled service, call-out rates and replacement parts.
  • Removal, relocation or resale implications if the building changes ownership.

Compare the total delivered project and annual service obligations, not the equipment line alone. Ask how long the quoted configuration can be unavailable during a fault and whether a second route between floors is needed during construction or maintenance.

Power, emergency operation and daily reliability

Battery operation is not identical across products. A stairlift’s available travel during an outage depends on factors such as stair length, angle and rider weight. Obtain the specific battery capacity, charging locations, low-battery alarm, manual-lowering procedure and emergency release instructions in writing. An elevator or platform lift may require different backup arrangements and a controlled emergency egress procedure.

Codes, standards and accessibility duties

ASME identifies A18.1-2023 as the Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts. Its scope covers design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of devices intended to transport people with mobility impairments, commonly in household applications. ASME identifies A17.1/CSA B44, 2025 edition, as the North American safety code for elevators and escalators.

The edition printed on a product brochure does not prove that your jurisdiction has adopted that edition. Ask the local building department or elevator authority which code, permit, inspection and licensing path applies to the address and project type. Confirm who performs acceptance testing and which records the owner must keep.

In settings covered by the US Department of Justice’s 2010 ADA Standards, the rules include provisions for private-residence elevators in applicable residential units and refer to platform-lift requirements. The Standards state that a lift without 80 inches of vertical clearance cannot be considered part of an accessible route in new construction. That single rule does not determine every home project: coverage depends on the building, its use, the project and the applicable jurisdiction.

Accessibility features also require continuing maintenance where the law applies. Put routine inspection, cleaning, battery replacement, lubrication, safety-device testing and response times into the ownership plan.

A practical selection and installation process

  1. Define the route and users. List every floor, wheelchair or walker dimensions, attendants, loads and the consequences of a transfer failure.
  2. Measure the existing building. Record stair angle and width, landings, headroom, doors, floor-to-floor heights, framing, foundations, utilities and exterior access.
  3. Screen the categories. Eliminate a seated stairlift if transfer is not safe; eliminate a cabin or platform concept that cannot obtain the required footprint, structure or approvals.
  4. Obtain an on-site assessment. Use installers who measure the actual route and identify the proposed code classification, not sellers who quote from photographs alone.
  5. Test a representative configuration. Have the user board, travel, park, turn, transfer and exit under supervision. Check the route with the folded equipment and another household member present.
  6. Commission design and permits. Coordinate structural drawings, electrical details, fire and weather protection, equipment submittals and the inspection schedule before demolition.
  7. Compare itemized quotes. Normalize capacity, dimensions, custom work, permits, finishes, warranty, service and outage provisions so the totals are meaningful.
  8. Complete acceptance and training. Obtain inspection records, operating manuals, emergency procedures, maintenance intervals and a named service contact before relying on the lift.

Common selection mistakes and their fixes

Choosing by catalogue photograph

Photographs hide rail offsets, landing conflicts, shaft thickness, door swings and wheelchair turning space. Require dimensioned drawings overlaid on the building survey.

Assuming a stairlift carries the wheelchair

A seated chairlift does not. If the wheelchair must travel with the person, assess a platform lift or elevator and verify its platform or cabin dimensions.

Using a generic capacity number

Ratings differ by model and option. Include the rider, clothing, bags and any permitted equipment, then compare that total with the exact quoted rating and safety margin.

Ignoring the second landing

A successful ride still ends in a transfer. Check the upper and lower landing for turning, door operation, lighting, handrails and a safe place to park the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a vendor timeline as a promise

Some straight models are advertised with one-hour installation, but assessment, preparation, permits, custom manufacture and building repairs can extend the project. Curved equipment requires precise measurement and rail fabrication.

Planning DIY installation

Manufacturers warn that installation and maintenance are not suitable do-it-yourself work. Incorrect attachment, wiring or safety-device adjustment can create a life-safety hazard and invalidate approvals or warranty coverage.

Questions to put in every contractor meeting

  • Which classification and code edition apply to this exact installation?
  • What dimensions and rated load are guaranteed in the quoted configuration?
  • What structural loads, openings, pits, overhead clearances and weather details must the building provide?
  • Which permits, inspections and tests are included, and who schedules them?
  • How does the user exit safely after a power failure or stoppage?
  • What maintenance interval, response time and replacement-part policy apply after the warranty?
  • Can the equipment be removed or relocated without damaging the building?
  • What work is excluded from the price, including finishes, electrical upgrades and repairs?

Bottom line for your building

For a single user who can transfer safely and has a suitable straight or curved stair route, a stairlift is usually the simpler construction project. For wheelchair travel without transfers, multiple occupants, bulky loads or a long-term need for a larger automatic cabin, evaluate a home elevator or an appropriately classified platform lift. The final choice should follow a measured site assessment, an itemized installed quote and confirmation from the local authority—not a category-wide claim about price, safety or reliability.
