The best backup power for a house depends on which appliances and circuits you need to run, for how long, and whether you can safely store fuel or install permanent equipment. A portable generator can supply power as long as fuel is available, a battery power station provides quiet but finite stored energy, and a standby generator can start automatically when professionally connected to a suitable fuel supply. Rooftop solar needs a backup-capable system configuration—typically storage or generator integration—to provide power during an outage.
Start by listing essential loads and the outage duration you want to cover. Then compare the options on output, energy supply, safety, installation, and upkeep. A “whole-home” label or a generator’s advertised wattage cannot tell you by itself whether a system will run your particular home.

How the four backup options differ
Backup systems solve different problems. Some provide power from fuel while they are running; others deliver energy stored in a battery; solar panels generate electricity but need a suitable configuration to serve loads during a grid outage. The distinction between power and stored energy matters: a system may have enough output to start an appliance but not enough stored energy or fuel to run it for the time you need.

| Portable generator | Occasional outages where lower equipment cost matters and safe outdoor placement and fuel are available | Can provide sustained power while fuel is available; larger units can serve selected home circuits through a transfer switch | Combustion exhaust and carbon-monoxide risk, noise, fuel storage and refueling, maintenance, and manual setup |
| Home standby generator | Frequent or prolonged outages where automatic operation is valuable and a permanent fuel connection and installation are feasible | Can start automatically and operate for extended periods on a natural-gas or propane supply; when properly sized, it can support many household loads | Equipment, site preparation, fuel connection, electrical work, and permitting make the installed project more involved and costly |
| Portable power station | Selected essential loads, quiet operation, or a location without a safe place for an engine generator | Rechargeable, quiet, and has no engine exhaust; it can recharge from the grid and compatible solar equipment | Finite stored capacity, charging time, unit weight, and purchase cost; solar recharge can be slow |
| Solar plus storage | A household that wants solar generation configured for backup as well as ordinary use | Solar can recharge storage and contribute resilience when the system is designed to supply backup loads | Solar-only grid-tied equipment may not operate during an outage; storage size, system design, installation, and local conditions matter |
The table describes broad system types, not guarantees for every model or home. Actual output, runtime, recharge time, and supported circuits depend on equipment and configuration. The cited sources do not establish one national installed price for these projects, and local quotes are needed to compare total costs.

Choose by the loads and the length of the outage
Make the decision around what must stay on, not the phrase “whole home.” Begin with appliances and circuits that protect health, prevent property problems, or keep essential communication working. A useful first list includes refrigeration, heating controls, a sump or well pump, communications equipment, lights, and medically necessary equipment. Your own list may differ; an appliance should not be treated as covered until you know how it will connect to the backup system.
Build an essential-load list
- Mark must-run items. Separate items that are essential throughout an outage from those you can switch on occasionally or leave off. Note whether a device is hardwired or plugs into an outlet; the connection affects the equipment and installation needed.
- Find the electrical demand. Check the appliance label, manual, or manufacturer information for its power requirements. For motor-driven equipment, account for the startup demand as well as the power needed once it is running. A pump or refrigerator can therefore be more demanding to start than a simple light.
- Decide how long each load must run. Continuous refrigeration, intermittent pumping, and short periods of phone charging create different energy needs. Write down the expected use rather than assuming every appliance will run all the time.
- Have the combined load assessed. Compare the loads that might operate at the same time with the equipment’s output rating. A qualified electrician can assess hardwired circuits and the practical connection to the panel; do not rely on a generic generator-size label.
Output and duration are separate checks. A generator must be able to supply the loads operating together, including applicable startup demand, and its fuel supply must support the intended operating period. A battery power station must meet both the appliances’ power demand and their cumulative energy use before it needs recharging. For a rough battery-runtime estimate, divide the unit’s stated usable energy by the appliances’ average power draw; actual runtime varies with load, equipment behavior, and conversion losses. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for a real estimate, and do not assume a refrigerator runs continuously at its label rating or that a station can run it for a particular number of hours without the relevant figures.

The ranges are wide because these categories include equipment with different capabilities. They do not show which circuits a unit can support in a specific house, what the generator will cost after installation, or how much fuel a particular load will consume. Consumer Reports reports portable-generator gasoline use of 12 to 20 gallons per day depending on output and load in the same comparison. Treat that as the publication’s reported range, not a forecast for every generator, load, or operating schedule. Check the selected model’s information and plan fuel availability for your actual use.
Portable generators: lower equipment cost, more hands-on operation
A portable generator can be a practical choice when outages are occasional, someone can deploy and monitor the equipment, and there is a safe outdoor location. Fuel availability is part of the system: the generator cannot keep producing power once it runs out, and fuel needs may be substantial during extended use. Plan where fuel will be stored and how you will obtain it without assuming that a local supply will be available during an emergency.
For hardwired home circuits, a properly installed transfer switch is required. It provides a planned way to connect the generator to selected circuits. Have a qualified electrician determine the appropriate arrangement and install panel-connected equipment. Never connect a generator in a way that can energize utility lines improperly. Improvised connections can put utility workers and others at risk and are not a substitute for transfer equipment.

Portable units also require someone to start, refuel, and maintain them. Noise may matter to household members and neighbors, while storage and setup require space and preparation. A generator that is affordable as equipment may not be the least demanding choice in practice if fuel, repeated setup, and manual operation are difficult for the people who will use it.

Standby generators: automatic backup with a larger installation commitment
A home standby generator is permanently installed and can start automatically when utility power is interrupted. It can use a natural-gas or propane supply for extended operation, so it avoids the same cycle of manually deploying a portable unit and refueling it from stored gasoline. Its potential to support many household loads depends on proper sizing and the home’s installation, not simply on choosing a standby model.
The quoted equipment price is only one part of the decision. Site preparation, electrical connection, fuel work, and permitting add to the project, and installation can add thousands of dollars according to Consumer Reports. Local installed costs vary, so obtain a site-specific quote that identifies what work is included. Before committing, confirm that the proposed location, fuel arrangement, and electrical design suit the property and the loads you want to cover.

Consumer Reports generator-testing lead Paolo Fu calls standby generators “the gold standard in backup power” and says they “outperform all other types of generators in our ratings.” That is Consumer Reports’ assessment within its ratings; it is not a universal ranking of every backup option for every household. Automatic operation may be worth the installation commitment to someone who prioritizes continuity through long or frequent outages, while another household may prefer a less permanent setup.

A portable power station stores electricity for later use. It has no combustion engine, so it produces no engine exhaust and can operate quietly. It may suit selected loads when an engine generator cannot be used safely at the property, or when quiet operation matters. It can be recharged from the grid and, if compatible, from solar panels.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIts central limitation is that it can deliver only the energy stored in its battery until recharged. A power station’s output rating and stored capacity answer different questions: output indicates whether it can supply a load at a given moment, while capacity helps estimate how long it can supply that load. Check both against the appliances you intend to run. Weight and price can also be material, particularly if you need a larger unit for more loads or longer use.

Solar charging does not guarantee quick recovery. Consumer Reports’ 2026 portable power station testing roundup identifies slow solar recharge as a constraint, but the information here does not establish a universal recharge time or a capacity and runtime for a particular model. Sunlight, compatible equipment, and the station’s specifications affect the result. Treat a battery as a finite reserve unless you have verified a workable recharge plan for the outage conditions you expect.
Will solar panels work during a power outage?
Not necessarily. The U.S. Department of Energy’s rooftop-solar resilience explainer notes that system configuration matters: a solar-only grid-tied system may not operate during a grid outage. Rooftop panels should not be assumed to provide household backup simply because they generate electricity when the grid is working.
Backup capability requires solar to be integrated with equipment designed to supply power during an outage. That may include energy storage or generator integration, depending on the system design. Ask an installer to identify which loads the system will serve, what happens when the grid fails, and how stored energy is replenished. Storage size and local conditions affect the practical result; a panel array’s presence alone does not establish how long essential loads can run.
Generator safety and professional connections
Fuel-powered generators produce carbon monoxide, an odorless, dangerous gas. They must be operated outdoors and kept away from openings. Consumer Reports’ emergency guidance specifies placing a portable generator at least 20 feet from the home, with exhaust directed away from windows and doors. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable local guidance for the specific equipment and site.
- Do not run a fuel generator indoors or place it where exhaust can enter the home through doors, windows, or other openings.
- Do not treat carbon-monoxide shutoff technology as permission to use a generator close to the house or indoors. It is an added safeguard, not a replacement for safe outdoor placement.
- Use a properly installed transfer switch for a portable generator connected to hardwired circuits. Have a qualified electrician handle panel connections and installation.
- Follow the battery power station manufacturer’s electrical and operating instructions. No engine exhaust does not remove the need to use electrical equipment as directed.
A practical way to select a system
Use these questions to narrow the choice before requesting equipment or installation quotes:
- Which loads are essential? Make a circuit-and-appliance list, including medically necessary equipment, pumps, refrigeration, communications, and lights where relevant.
- How long must they operate? Define the outage duration you want to plan for and whether each load runs continuously or intermittently.
- Can the site support fuel equipment? If considering a portable generator, identify a safe outdoor operating location, a fuel plan, and who will handle setup and refueling. If considering standby equipment, confirm that a permanent installation and fuel connection are feasible.
- Is automatic operation important? A standby unit is designed to start automatically; portable generators and portable power stations need hands-on deployment or charging arrangements.
- Do you already have solar? Find out whether the existing system is configured to supply backup during an outage. If not, request a design that explains the required storage or generator integration.
- What is the total project cost? Compare equipment with installation, site preparation, fuel connection, and electrical work where applicable. Do not compare a portable unit’s equipment price directly with a standby project’s installed cost.
- Who will verify the design? Ask a qualified electrician or appropriate installer to assess loads, panel connections, transfer equipment, system design, and permitting requirements for the property.
These questions make the tradeoff clearer: portable generators favor lower equipment cost and fuel-backed operation but require safe placement and repeated manual work; standby generators favor automatic service but bring a permanent installation; batteries favor quiet, exhaust-free operation for selected loads but need charging; and solar contributes to outage resilience only when configured to provide backup.
