Home Assistant Labs is an optional, built-in area for testing preview features before they become part of Home Assistant’s standard experience. Labs previews are designed to be functional and tested for stability, but their design, behavior, terminology, or long-term future can still change. A feature may graduate into Home Assistant—or be removed.
Labs is therefore a middle ground: less disruptive than installing a development build, but less final than using only established features. You can find it at Settings → System → Labs and enable previews individually.

What is Home Assistant Labs?
Home Assistant Labs is Home Assistant’s structured way of building features in the open with its user community. It gives users access to selected previews while the project evaluates how those features work in real homes.

Labs was introduced publicly with Home Assistant 2025.12 on December 3, 2025. The first highlighted preview was Winter mode, which added falling snow to the interface. That was a simple demonstration of the model, not a sign that Labs is limited to cosmetic changes.
Labs is not the same as a beta release
The distinction matters. A Home Assistant beta primarily tests the stability of an upcoming Home Assistant release. Labs normally focuses on one feature whose design, usefulness, or behavior is still being refined.
| Home Assistant beta | Home Assistant Labs | |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Test an upcoming release | Refine an individual feature |
| Scope | Usually version-wide | Usually feature-specific |
| How you opt in | Install a prerelease version | Enable a preview from the Labs panel |
| What may change | Release-level stability and bugs | Design, behavior, terminology, or product direction |
| Possible outcome | The release becomes stable | The feature graduates, changes, or is removed |
Home Assistant describes Labs previews as tested, but that does not mean they are guaranteed to be bug-free or permanently compatible with every integration, custom card, device, or automation.
How to enable a Labs preview
- Open Settings in Home Assistant.
- Go to System.
- Select Labs.
- Read the description for each available preview.
- Open any linked documentation, feedback, or issue-reporting information.
- Create a backup if the feature affects important automations, dashboards, or household workflows.
- Enable the individual preview you want to test.
Opening the Labs panel does not automatically enable every experiment. Previews are generally disabled by default and are selected individually. A feature involving analytics or data sharing may also have its own separate opt-in.
The Labs framework is designed to activate previews at runtime, so enabling or disabling one normally does not require a configuration update or Home Assistant restart. If the interface does not immediately reflect the change, refresh the relevant page and check that preview’s documentation; individual features may have their own limitations.
What has appeared in Labs?
Winter mode
Winter mode was the first public example, announced with Home Assistant 2025.12. It added a seasonal visual effect to the interface and showed how an optional, reversible preview could be offered to users.
Purpose-specific automation triggers and conditions
A much more substantial example was the work on human-friendly automation controls. Across several releases, Home Assistant previewed triggers and conditions based on real-world concepts such as a light turning on, a person arriving home, a climate device heating, a calendar event starting, or a vacuum returning to its dock.
The feature expanded through Home Assistant 2025.12, 2026.1, 2026.2, 2026.4, and 2026.5. It is no longer merely an upcoming Labs experiment: the work graduated and became the default experience in Home Assistant 2026.7, released July 1, 2026.
This is a useful example of the Labs lifecycle. A feature can begin as an optional preview, gain broader support through several releases, receive community feedback, and eventually become part of the normal product.

Device analytics and the Open Home Foundation device database
Home Assistant 2026.2 introduced an opt-in Labs-related feature allowing users to contribute anonymized device information to help build the Open Home Foundation device database.
Home Assistant’s release documentation described the contribution as voluntary and anonymized, with no personal data according to that explanation. Users could preview the information and opt out later. The Open Home Foundation announced a public preview of the database on July 23, 2026.

This example also illustrates an important privacy rule: Labs is not automatically a data-sharing program, but privacy is not identical for every preview. Read the disclosure attached to any feature involving analytics, telemetry, or device information before opting in.
Is Home Assistant Labs safe for a production smart home?
Labs is safer than running an unstable development build, but it is not risk-free. Home Assistant says previews are tested and usable; it also warns that their behavior may change and that features may eventually disappear.
The practical risk depends on what you enable:
| Preview type | Practical concern | sensible approach |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic interface change | Usually limited to appearance or layout | Try it first on a secondary dashboard |
| Automation editor or trigger change | Could make an existing workflow harder to understand or maintain | Test a nonessential automation and verify critical traces |
| Analytics or device-database participation | Requires a separate privacy decision | Read the data-use explanation before opting in |
| Safety-critical workflow | A confusing change could affect heating, security, or other important behavior | Use a test installation or wait for graduation |
Before enabling a preview that affects your home, make a current Home Assistant backup. Do not begin experimenting immediately before a trip, holiday, or period when your automations are mission-critical. Also remember that disabling a preview reverses the feature setting, but it may not automatically undo automation edits, dashboard changes, or other configuration decisions made while the preview was active.
A cautious way to test Labs
- Back up first. Confirm that the backup is current and that you know how you would restore it.
- Read the feature-specific information. Check documentation, known limitations, and any privacy disclosure.
- Start small. Use a nonessential automation or secondary dashboard rather than changing the systems your household depends on.
- Record the change. Note the preview name, Home Assistant version, and date you enabled it.
- Observe normal operation. Check automation traces, device responses, dashboards, and logs where relevant.
- Disable it if necessary. Return to Settings → System → Labs and switch off the individual preview.
- Verify critical automations manually. Do not assume that disabling a preview has restored every related configuration detail.
If you need a completely separate safety boundary, use a secondary Home Assistant installation, virtual machine, or spare device. This is the better option for homes where Home Assistant controls security, heating, medical equipment, or other safety-sensitive systems.

Labs is valuable because users can influence features while they are still being refined. Each preview may provide links to documentation, community discussion, general feedback, or issue reporting.
A useful report should include:
- Your Home Assistant version.
- The integration, device, or entity involved.
- What you expected to happen.
- What actually happened.
- Clear reproduction steps.
- Screenshots, traces, or relevant logs where appropriate.
- Whether the problem appeared only after enabling the Labs preview.
Use the channel linked from the feature itself and check for an existing report before opening a duplicate. A report that identifies the exact preview and provides reproducible steps is much more useful than simply saying that the feature feels broken.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when a preview graduates or disappears?
Graduation means Home Assistant considers the feature ready for the normal product experience. It does not guarantee that every old label, configuration path, or visual detail will remain identical. Read the release notes for migration information, particularly when a preview affects automations.

The visible Labs list can change from one Home Assistant release to another. If the Labs menu is missing, first confirm that your version supports the Labs integration. If a feature is not listed, it may have graduated, been renamed, been removed, or not yet reached your release.
Common problems and what to do
The Labs menu is missing
Check your Home Assistant version and whether Labs is available in that release. Not every installation exposes the same preview list.
A preview is not listed
Check the current release notes and feature documentation. The preview may have changed lifecycle status or may require a newer version.
The enable control appears to do nothing
Refresh the relevant page, check whether the feature has a separate configuration requirement, and consult its documentation. Avoid inventing YAML settings or command-line flags unless that preview’s official documentation provides them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn automation behaves differently
Compare its automation trace before and after enabling the preview. If the behavior is unclear or affects a critical workflow, disable the preview and verify the automation manually.
You are concerned about privacy
Review the feature-specific data-use explanation. Do not generalize the device-analytics disclosure to every Labs feature, and do not assume that all previews involve data collection.
Who should use Home Assistant Labs?
Labs is a good fit if you want early access, are comfortable evaluating changes in your own setup, maintain reliable backups, and are willing to provide constructive feedback.
Waiting is sensible if your installation is difficult to restore, your household relies on an unchanging interface, or Home Assistant controls safety-critical systems. You can follow official release notes and community discussions without enabling a preview, or experiment on a separate installation and wait for a feature to graduate.
Using Labs does not require Home Assistant Green, Home Assistant Yellow, a paid subscription, or a particular commercial device. It is a software feature available through the existing Home Assistant interface. Dedicated hardware may simplify installation or improve reliability, but it is not a prerequisite for Labs.
