Connect ZWA-2

Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 Brings Standard Z-Wave and Long Range to One Adapter

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 is worth considering when a Z-Wave installation needs better radio placement, difficult-area coverage, or native Z-Wave Long Range support. It is not a mandatory upgrade for every reliable Z-Wave network. The key point is that Long Range is a separate, direct-to-controller network—not a faster mode that turns existing Z-Wave devices into Long Range devices.

The $69 U.S. recommended MSRP excludes taxes; the European price is €59 including applicable taxes, according to Home Assistant’s product page. Actual retailer pricing and availability may vary.

What the Connect ZWA-2 is

The Connect ZWA-2 is Nabu Casa’s official USB-connected Z-Wave adapter for Home Assistant. It works with Z-Wave JS and supports both conventional Z-Wave mesh networking and Z-Wave Long Range (LR).

It is not a standalone Home Assistant hub. A working installation still needs:

  1. Home Assistant running on a supported computer or appliance.
  2. The Z-Wave JS application or add-on.
  3. The ZWA-2, or another compatible Z-Wave controller.

Like other Home Assistant Z-Wave setups, the system is designed for local device control rather than requiring a vendor cloud service.

Why the ZWA-2 is much larger than a normal USB stick

The unusual size is primarily an antenna decision. Instead of hiding a small antenna inside a compact dongle, the ZWA-2 uses a larger external antenna and base tuned for Z-Wave’s wavelength. Home Assistant presents this design as a way to improve reception, range, and reliability; those are vendor claims rather than independent comparative test results.

The adapter measures 125 × 125 × 315 mm and weighs 350 g. It should stand upright, with the antenna kept away from metal, obstructions, heat sources, server racks, and other radio-blocking or interfering objects. The trade-off is straightforward: the design may provide more reception margin, but it occupies considerably more shelf or desk space than a USB stick.

Home Assistant recommends a direct USB connection between the computer running Z-Wave JS and the adapter. If the ideal radio location is far from the Home Assistant server, the preferred arrangement is to run Z-Wave JS on a nearby machine, connect the ZWA-2 to that machine by USB, and connect Home Assistant to Z-Wave JS over the network. Do not assume that a long USB cable or an improvised network USB bridge will be equally reliable; the Z-Wave JS-to-adapter connection is latency-sensitive.

Standard Z-Wave and Long Range are different networks

Feature Standard Z-Wave Z-Wave Long Range
Topology Mesh Star
Routing Powered devices can relay messages Compatible devices communicate directly with the controller
Device requirement Works with the broad conventional Z-Wave ecosystem Requires an LR-capable device
Typical strength Whole-home coverage built from powered routers Remote or isolated devices that lack nearby mesh routes
Can both operate together? Yes, with the ZWA-2

Existing standard Z-Wave devices remain on the conventional mesh. They do not become Long Range devices simply because the controller supports LR, and standard mesh devices do not route LR traffic. During inclusion of a compatible device, Home Assistant provides the choice of joining the standard network or the Long Range network.

Zooz 800 Series Z-Wave Long Range S2 USB Stick ZST39 LR, Great for DIY Smart Home (Use with Home Assistant or HomeSeer Software)
  • READ BEFORE YOU BUY: The Z-Wave stick is for advanced users only, NOT for beginners. You must be comfortable with programming and have expert computer and Z-Wave knowledge to use this device. NVM back-up from 500 or 700 series Z-Wave sticks will brick the device. Do NOT apply NVM backups or firmware updates published outside of the Zooz support portal to avoid bricking the stick and voiding its warranty.
  • NEW 800 SERIES Z-WAVE LONG RANGE: Take advantage of the latest wireless innovation with Z-Wave Long Range that extends your network coverage up to a mile. NOTE: Your home automation software needs to support the Long Range implementation on the interface side as well as the end Z-Wave device you add to the network for the Long Range functionality to be fully unlocked.
  • WHAT YOU NEED: This 800 Series Long Range Stick adds Z-Wave Plus and Z-Wave Long Range capability to your DIY smart home set-up. You'll need a dedicated computer (PC, laptop, or Raspberry Pi, sold separately) and home automation software of your choice (not included) to complete the system.
  • ADVANCED Z-WAVE: Works great with the most popular software like Home Assitant (with JS) and HomeSeer. Supports OTA firmware updates and and all of the latest Z-Wave library commands.

This makes the ZWA-2 useful in mixed installations. A home can continue using existing switches, locks, and sensors on its standard mesh while adding LR-capable devices for a detached garage, basement, attic, outbuilding, or other difficult location.

What “Long Range” means in real homes

Home Assistant reports up to 1.5 km (0.9 miles) in line-of-sight testing, indoor horizontal results of approximately 50–100 metres in its testing, and successful tests through several concrete floors. These figures come from Home Assistant’s own testing and should not be treated as a guaranteed household range specification.

Actual results depend on:

  • Concrete, brick, metal-stud, foil-backed insulation, and other building materials.
  • The location and orientation of the controller.
  • The antenna quality and placement of the remote device.
  • Regional frequency and power settings.
  • Interference and the number of walls or floors between endpoints.
  • Whether the device is a small battery sensor or a larger powered product with a better antenna.

The practical benefit may be fewer missed messages and more reliable responses rather than a dramatic maximum-distance increase. A stronger controller cannot completely compensate for a poorly designed or badly positioned end device. Nor does LR repair a standard mesh that has too few powered routing devices.

Hardware specifications

  • Z-Wave chipset: Silicon Labs ZG23, 800 series.
  • USB bridge: ESP32-S3.
  • Connection and power: USB-C, 5 V DC, 1 A.
  • Protocols: Standard Z-Wave and Z-Wave Long Range.
  • Frequency range: 860–930 MHz.
  • Peak antenna gain: 3.38 dBi.
  • Radiation pattern: Omnidirectional.
  • Operating temperature: 0–65 °C (32–149 °F).
  • Environment: Indoor use; non-condensing humidity.
  • Included: Antenna/base, 1.5-metre USB cable, quick-start guide, warranty information, and safety information.

The ESP32-S3 functions as a USB-serial bridge. The ZWA-2 is not a general-purpose ESPHome device: Home Assistant says it does not run ESPHome firmware, and its Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna is inactive in the standard configuration.

Regional frequency settings matter

The ZWA-2 is sold as one globally supported model, but its radio operation still depends on the selected region. Examples listed by Home Assistant include:

Use the region that matches your jurisdiction and devices. Selecting another region as a range experiment can cause incompatibility, poor operation, or regulatory problems.

Setup path in Home Assistant

  1. Connect the ZWA-2 to the machine running Home Assistant and Z-Wave JS with the supplied USB-C cable.
  2. Open Home Assistant’s Z-Wave integration or Z-Wave JS setup flow.
  3. Allow Home Assistant to discover the adapter and confirm the selected region.
  4. Create a new Z-Wave network or begin migration from an existing controller.
  5. Include devices through Home Assistant.
  6. For an LR-capable device, choose standard Z-Wave or Z-Wave Long Range during inclusion.
  7. Apply available firmware updates through the current Home Assistant/Z-Wave JS controls.
  8. Place the antenna upright and clear of metal and obstructions.
  9. Test devices from their final locations, not only beside the controller.

Interface labels can change between Home Assistant releases, so use the current ZWA-2 setup documentation rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Before migrating an existing Z-Wave network

Home Assistant supports automatic migration from most modern Z-Wave sticks, but that is not a guarantee for every legacy controller, firmware state, or security configuration. Treat migration as a network change, not a simple USB replacement.

Migration checklist

  • Make a full Home Assistant backup.
  • Create a Z-Wave network or NVM backup using the current controller and supported tools.
  • Confirm that the existing security keys are backed up.
  • Record important node IDs, device names, associations, scenes, and automations.
  • Check whether the source adapter is modern enough for automatic migration.
  • Read the current controller compatibility and migration guidance.
  • Keep the old controller available until the new network has been tested.

A successful migration may preserve network information, but readers should be prepared for special handling of older adapters, associations, secure devices, or nodes that do not restore cleanly. If migration fails, restore the backup or reconnect the original controller before excluding and re-including devices. Do not begin by factory-resetting the old adapter.

Firmware matters as much as the chipset

Home Assistant recommends 800-series adapters and says compatible firmware should use a suitable Silicon Labs SDK, preferably SDK 7.23.x or newer. Its controller guidance identifies some older or problematic firmware ranges, including versions before 7.17.2 and versions from 7.20 through 7.21.3. These recommendations are version-sensitive; check the live compatibility page before buying or updating any adapter.

This is especially important when comparing the ZWA-2 with third-party 800-series sticks. An 800-series label alone does not guarantee stability. Firmware update support, SDK compatibility, and recovery options are part of the controller’s real value.

ZWA-2 compared with alternatives

Adapter Strength Trade-off
Home Assistant Connect ZWA-2 Official Home Assistant adapter, standard Z-Wave plus LR, large tuned external antenna, guided integration Large footprint; single Z-Wave protocol; costs more than some compact sticks
Zooz ZST39 LR 800-series Z-Wave/LR capability in a conventional USB-stick form factor Requires closer attention to firmware and SDK requirements; not the same official Home Assistant hardware workflow
Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro Combines Z-Wave and Zigbee in one compact USB device Not the ZWA-2’s large antenna/base design; verify current Home Assistant and firmware compatibility
Existing controller No migration cost or disruption if the network is stable May lack LR, newer firmware support, or sufficient reception margin

See the official Zooz ZST39 LR page and Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro page for current product details. Prices, availability, taxes, and regional support can change.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting old devices to become LR: Only compatible devices can join the Long Range network.
  • Assuming LR replaces the mesh: Standard and LR networks have different topologies and operate in parallel.
  • Installing the antenna inside a cabinet: Metal enclosures and dense equipment racks can undermine the radio advantage.
  • Using the wrong region: Regional settings are a compatibility and compliance requirement, not a performance tweak.
  • Using a poor network bridge: Keep the adapter on a direct USB connection to the computer running Z-Wave JS.
  • Migrating without backups: Preserve Home Assistant data, the Z-Wave NVM/network backup, and security keys first.
  • Blaming the controller for a weak mesh: Standard Z-Wave may need additional powered routing devices.
  • Judging range beside the server: Test at the actual installation location, including the final device orientation.

Who should buy the ZWA-2?

Situation Recommendation
New Home Assistant Z-Wave installation Strong choice if official integration, 800-series hardware, and LR are priorities.
Existing mesh is stable and centrally located Keep the current controller unless LR or newer hardware is needed.
Remote sensor, basement, attic, or detached garage Consider the ZWA-2 and an explicitly LR-compatible device; placement and construction still determine the result.
Many standard devices but too few powered routers Improve the mesh first; a new controller alone may not solve the topology problem.
Need Zigbee and Z-Wave in one stick Consider the Aeotec Z-Stick 10 Pro, subject to current compatibility and firmware support.
Want the smallest or lowest-cost supported 800-series option Compare a supported stick such as the Zooz ZST39 LR, while checking firmware requirements.

Final assessment

The ZWA-2’s main proposition is not simply “more Z-Wave.” It combines an 800-series controller, a purpose-built external antenna, official Home Assistant integration, and simultaneous standard and Long Range operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it a sensible purchase for new installations, challenging buildings, remote devices, and users who want a supported Home Assistant-first setup. It is less compelling as a reflex upgrade for a stable standard mesh. Long Range only helps devices that support it, and standard Z-Wave still depends on good placement and enough powered routers. The best decision is therefore based on the coverage problem, device compatibility, controller location, firmware support, and migration risk—not on the Long Range label alone.
