There is no well-supported ranking that identifies the nine oldest houseplants. The plants below are better treated as historically notable or established indoor choices—not a chronological top nine. Boston fern has a documented Victorian parlor association, while Kew’s Eastern Cape giant cycad is a centuries-old botanical-garden specimen, not a typical household plant. For practical growing, match a plant to your home’s light, moisture and humidity rather than choosing by age alone.

What “oldest houseplant” can—and cannot—mean

A plant that has spent centuries in a pot is not necessarily evidence that its species was among the first plants grown in ordinary homes. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew says its Eastern Cape giant cycad, Encephalartos altensteinii, arrived at the Gardens in 1775 and is thought to be one of the oldest potted plants in the world. Kew describes that particular conservatory specimen; it does not establish a ranking of the oldest household plants. Kew’s account of the specimen provides the historical context.

For a domestic example with a specific historical association, University of New Hampshire Extension says Boston fern was a staple parlor plant in Victorian times and remains widely grown. Its account supports the Victorian connection, not a claim that Boston fern is one of exactly nine oldest houseplants. The distinction matters: a plant’s historical record and its suitability for a modern room are separate questions.

Five indoor plants with useful historical or growing context

The available sources substantiate indoor placement and care context for these plants, but do not provide comparable dates for when each entered household cultivation. Use the comparison to choose by conditions, not as an age ranking.

Plant What is established Best fit to consider
Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) UNH Extension documents a Victorian parlor association and recommends indirect light, consistently moist soil and relatively high humidity. UNH Extension’s Boston fern guidance was published in 2019. A room where you can keep the soil from drying and maintain humidity.
Cast-iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) University extension indoor-plant guidance lists it as a low-light option. University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant guidance and University of Georgia Extension’s indoor plant guide support the placement context. A lower-light location.
Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans) University extension indoor-plant guidance lists it as a low-light option. University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant guidance and University of Georgia Extension’s indoor plant guide support the placement context. A lower-light location if you prefer a palm form.
Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) University extension guidance places it in medium light. University of Minnesota Extension’s houseplant guidance and University of Georgia Extension’s indoor plant guide support the placement context. A spot with medium light.
Eastern Cape giant cycad (Encephalartos altensteinii) Kew says its specimen arrived in 1775; this is a historic potted conservatory plant, not evidence of an everyday home-care choice. Kew reports that the specimen weighs more than a tonne and stands over four metres tall. Kew’s account describes it. Historical context only; do not treat the specimen as a casual purchase recommendation.

How to choose for your home

Start with available light

If the intended spot is low-light, cast-iron plant or parlor palm has extension-backed placement context. For medium light, spider plant is the supported option in this comparison. Boston fern’s guidance calls for indirect light away from direct exposure; the sources do not establish it as a low-light equivalent to the cast-iron plant or parlor palm.

Be realistic about moisture and humidity

Boston fern is the outlier in this group for care demands. UNH Extension recommends consistently moist soil and relatively high humidity; dry conditions can brown and kill fronds. If you cannot reliably maintain those conditions, choose based on the better fit of the other plants rather than assuming all historically associated houseplants are equally forgiving.

Keep the cycad’s story in the right setting

Kew’s giant cycad is valuable as a historical example of a long-lived potted specimen, but its size and conservatory setting make it unlike an ordinary indoor plant. What the evidence supports

  • Boston fern has a documented Victorian parlor association and specific moisture and humidity needs.
  • Cast-iron plant and parlor palm are extension-listed for low-light indoor placement; spider plant is listed for medium light.
  • Kew’s 1775 arrival date applies to its particular Eastern Cape giant cycad specimen, not to a household-cultivation timeline for the species.
  • The sources do not establish a definitive historical ranking of nine oldest houseplants or comparable cultivation dates for nine species.
