HI-FI 200Watt 2.1-Channel Audio Amplifier for Home: Real Output, Parts, and Safety

The HI-FI 200Watt project is a DIY 2.1 Class-AB amplifier—not a verified 200 W commercial product. Here is what its TDA7294 and TDA7265 design really delivers and what builders must check.

This is a DIY 2.1-channel power-amplifier project, not a verified 200-watt retail amplifier. Its detailed description specifies one TDA7294 amplifier for the subwoofer at approximately 100 W and one TDA7265 dual amplifier at approximately 25 W per stereo channel. That is roughly 150 W in total, subject to speaker impedance, supply voltage, distortion, cooling, and transformer capacity.

The design may suit an experienced electronics hobbyist who wants to build a repairable Class-AB home-audio system. It is not a plug-and-play substitute for a commercial receiver, and the mains power supply, enclosure, grounding, thermal management, and crossover are the builder’s responsibility.

What the project actually is

The project published on Hackaday.io is a completed DIY amplifier build created on April 25, 2022, with later updates indicated on the project page. It has no standard retail model number, independent certification, commercial warranty, or independently verified performance report.

Its intended architecture is:

Audio source
   ↓
2.1 preamplifier / crossover
   ├── left signal → TDA7265 → left speaker
   ├── right signal → TDA7265 → right speaker
   └── bass signal → TDA7294 → subwoofer

“2.1” means two stereo channels—left and right—plus one normally mono bass channel for a subwoofer. It is not a 5.1 or 7.1 surround receiver. The project’s reference to a “Dolby enabled system” should be treated as the creator’s description; the available project information does not establish licensed Dolby decoding.

The short verdict

This is an interesting educational build for an experienced electronics builder, but the title overstates what the detailed specifications establish. The defensible description is approximately 100 W for the subwoofer plus 25 W × 2 for the satellite channels, or about 150 W nominally across the system—not verified 200 W continuous RMS output.

Choose it if you want to learn analog audio construction and can design a safe dual-rail supply. Avoid it if you need Bluetooth, HDMI ARC, optical input, remote control, a warranty, guaranteed measurements, or a beginner-friendly project.

Power output: why “200 W” needs qualification

Section Project description Proper qualification
Subwoofer About 100 W using a TDA7294 Depends on supply rails, load impedance, distortion, cooling, and transformer current
Left and right 25 W per channel using a TDA7265 A stated design figure, not a guaranteed continuous measured result
Total About 150 W Does not reconcile with the project title’s 200 W figure

Power figures cannot be compared meaningfully without stating speaker impedance, frequency, number of channels driven, total harmonic distortion, supply voltage, and test duration. “Music power,” peak power, RMS or continuous power, and total system power are different measurements.

STMicroelectronics describes the TDA7294 as a 100 V, 100 W DMOS Class-AB audio amplifier for Hi-Fi applications, with thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection. Those device capabilities do not guarantee that every circuit using the IC will deliver 100 W of low-distortion continuous output. ST describes the TDA7265 as a dual Class-AB audio power amplifier for stereo applications.

How the 2.1 signal path works

The power-amplifier ICs do not automatically create a complete 2.1 system. The project requires a suitable preamplifier or crossover to divide the source signal:

  • The left and right paths drive the satellite or full-range speakers.
  • The low-pass path combines or routes bass information to the mono subwoofer channel.
  • Gain controls must be matched so the subwoofer is not excessively loud or too quiet.
  • Crossover frequency, phase, and speaker polarity affect how smoothly the bass integrates with the satellites.

A passive crossover and an active preamplifier have different insertion loss, impedance, gain, and adjustment requirements. The project refers to an earlier 2.1 preamplifier design, but the available information is not sufficient to reproduce that entire crossover confidently. Treat it as a required subsystem rather than assuming the amplifier board provides all filtering.

Amplifier ICs and their different supply requirements

The TDA7294 handles the higher-power bass channel, while the TDA7265 provides two lower-power stereo channels. Both are Class-AB devices. They can produce good audio performance, but their output stages dissipate substantial heat at higher levels and are less electrically efficient than a comparable Class-D design.

The project’s technical details state that the TDA7294 uses a higher supply voltage than the TDA7265. The builder used an 18-0-18 V center-tapped transformer and operated the TDA7294 below its potential because of the shared supply arrangement. A dual filtered supply and separate protection fuses are recommended.

Power-supply requirements and mains safety

An 18-0-18 V AC transformer does not produce a guaranteed ±18 V DC supply after rectification. The final rails depend on the rectifier arrangement, filter capacitors, transformer regulation, mains voltage, load, wiring losses, and ripple. Calculate the actual operating rails and current requirements against the latest IC datasheets rather than choosing a supply from the transformer label alone.

The project’s power section includes a 6 A rectifier and large filter capacitors. A suitable build also needs correctly rated fuses, grounding, filtering, an enclosed power section, strain relief, insulated terminals, and wiring sized for the expected current.

Safety warning: Transformer primary wiring can expose you to lethal mains voltage. Large electrolytic capacitors may remain charged after power-off. Do not test an exposed mains-powered prototype casually. Use a qualified person for the mains side, and use a current-limited low-voltage supply where possible during troubleshooting.

Parts and hardware

The project lists or requires the following components:

  • TDA7294 and TDA7265 amplifier ICs
  • 22 kΩ, 1 kΩ, 18 kΩ, 15 kΩ, 560 Ω, and 4.7 Ω resistors
  • 100 nF and 10 nF polyester capacitors
  • 1 μF, 47 μF, and 3,300 μF electrolytic capacitors
  • A large heatsink, thermal compound, and insulating hardware
  • A 6 A rectifier and suitable transformer or dual-rail power supply
  • Two-layer PCB, speaker terminals, input connectors, wiring, fuse holders, and protection components
  • A ventilated, electrically safe enclosure

The project page provides a schematic PDF and Gerber PCB files. Check the latest files before ordering boards because the creator mentions intended changes to the filtering. Verify component footprints, capacitor polarity, resistor values, IC orientation, connector pinouts, and PCB revisions.

Cooling and electrical isolation

A large heatsink is essential. Thermal shutdown is a protective feature, not a replacement for correct heatsink design. Use thermal compound, provide ventilation, and ensure the heatsink has adequate surface area for the intended load and enclosure temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the IC package tabs are electrically connected to any supply or output node. If two devices share a heatsink, use the required mica or other insulating pads, insulating bushings, and hardware. The project specifically warns that one IC must be insulated from the other with a mica sheet to prevent a short circuit. Confirm the exact isolation requirement against the applicable datasheet before applying power.

PCB assembly and first power-up

  1. Inspect the schematic and latest Gerber files before purchasing parts.
  2. Confirm every footprint, polarity mark, component value, and connector orientation.
  3. Keep high-current supply and speaker traces short and wide.
  4. Keep transformer, rectifier, and mains wiring away from small-signal input wiring.
  5. Plan the ground scheme carefully to reduce hum and circulating currents.
  6. Install the ICs securely with correct thermal and electrical isolation.
  7. Test the transformer, rectifier, filter capacitors, and unloaded rails separately.
  8. Use a current limiter or series lamp for the first mains power-up.
  9. Check supply-rail voltages and inspect for abnormal heating or current draw.
  10. Measure DC offset at each speaker output before connecting speakers.
  11. Begin testing at low volume with a dummy load or inexpensive test speaker.

Do not connect valuable speakers until the supply rails, output offset, mute or standby wiring, and signal path have been checked.

Speaker compatibility

Do not match speakers solely by a “100 W” label. Check:

  • Nominal impedance and the speaker’s real minimum impedance
  • Continuous and peak power handling
  • Speaker sensitivity and expected listening distance
  • Subwoofer driver size and enclosure design
  • Whether the subwoofer is passive or powered
  • Whether the transformer and amplifier can handle the chosen load safely

A nominal 4 Ω speaker may present a lower impedance at some frequencies. A speaker’s power rating also does not guarantee loudness or compatibility; amplifier clipping, enclosure tuning, and thermal limits matter just as much.

Troubleshooting guide

No sound

  • Confirm the source and input selection.
  • Check whether the preamplifier is producing output.
  • Verify left, right, and bass signal routing.
  • Check power rails, fuses, mute or standby wiring, and speaker terminals.
  • Inspect for solder bridges, reversed electrolytics, and thermal shutdown.

Loud hum

Inspect the grounding scheme, transformer placement, input-cable shielding, power-supply ripple, and cable routing. Keep sensitive input wiring away from mains, transformer, rectifier, and high-current supply wiring. Ground loops between the source and amplifier can also cause hum.

Thermal shutdown

Possible causes include an undersized heatsink, excessive output level, a speaker impedance that is too low, a shorted speaker cable, inadequate transformer current, incorrect supply voltage, or poor thermal contact. Check that insulating pads have not been omitted or punctured.

Fuse blows immediately

Do not replace the fuse with a larger one. Check rectifier and capacitor polarity, transformer connections, mains-voltage configuration, solder bridges, shorted ICs, uninsulated tabs, and shorts on the secondary or DC rails.

Distortion or weak bass

Check crossover frequency, subwoofer gain, phase and polarity, preamplifier clipping, supply sag, speaker impedance, feedback-component values, enclosure design, and heatsink temperature.

Is it really Hi-Fi?

“Hi-Fi” is best treated as the project’s design description, not a verified finished-system result. The ICs are intended for high-quality Class-AB audio, but final performance depends on PCB layout, grounding, ripple, input-stage noise, crossover design, speakers, enclosure construction, and thermal behavior.

The available project coverage does not provide independent measurements of frequency response, THD versus power, noise floor, output impedance, or listening performance. Claims such as “minimum noise” or “best output” should therefore not be read as laboratory specifications.

DIY build versus a ready-made 2.1 amplifier

A commercial Class-D alternative is more practical for anyone who wants a working system quickly. The manufacturer’s page for the Fosi Audio BT30D listed a price of $89.99 when checked on August 16, 2026. It lists Bluetooth 5.0, RCA input, bass and treble controls, an adjustable 20–200 Hz subwoofer cutoff, passive-speaker output, passive or active-subwoofer support, and a supplied 24 V/4.5 A adapter. The page also showed a 24-month warranty and 30-day money-back guarantee.

The BT30D’s listed 50 W × 2 plus 100 W figures are maximum ratings and are not automatically equivalent to the DIY project’s claimed output. It is a convenience-oriented Class-D product with a different supply, thermal profile, input set, and upgrade path.

The older Fosi BT30A page listed Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX and aptX HD, RCA input, and 50 W × 2 plus 100 W at 4 Ω, but it was marked sold out when checked. Prices and availability vary by region and date.

Who should build it?

This project makes sense for an experienced hobbyist who wants to learn analog audio electronics, already has a suitable 2.1 crossover plan, understands dual-rail supplies, and can safely handle mains wiring and high-current capacitors. It offers customization and potential component-level repair.

It is a poor choice for a beginner, anyone seeking guaranteed 200 W continuous output, or anyone who needs modern inputs such as HDMI ARC, optical audio, Bluetooth, app control, or multichannel surround decoding.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
