Henon Bamboo: What We Know About Its Estimated 120-Year Flowering Cycle

Henon bamboo’s estimated 120-year flowering cycle is based on historical records. Japanese field studies report extensive dieback and conflicting signs of rhizome regrowth.

Henon bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra var. henonis) is associated with a flowering interval estimated at about 120 years, but that figure comes from historical records—not a measured biological timer. Japanese studies of the current flowering period have documented widespread dieback and little or no successful seed production at the sites studied. They disagree on whether dwarf shoots regrow from surviving rhizomes, so the species’ full recovery process remains unresolved.

What is Henon bamboo?

Henon bamboo is a tall, temperate bamboo native to China and introduced to Japan in ancient times. It is now widely distributed in Japan, where it is planted for edible shoots and for culms used in craft materials. A 2023 study describes culms about 6–10 cm in diameter and approximately 15 m tall.

In non-flowering years, the bamboo spreads clonally through horizontal underground rhizomes. New culms emerge in May and grow rapidly through August; flowering in Japan has been reported from May to June. These seasonal descriptions come from studies in Japan and should not be treated as a calendar that applies to every climate or specimen.

Why is the flowering interval called an estimate?

The roughly 120-year interval is inferred from historical documents, including records dating to the ninth century, rather than from continuous observation of a complete cycle. Yamada and colleagues reported that the last major flowering in Japan occurred mainly in 1908, with some flowering recorded between 1903 and 1912. If the estimated interval holds, they projected the next major flowering primarily around 2028; that is a conditional projection, not a guaranteed date.

Flowering has been documented at Japanese sites during the current period. Ikematsu and Shimamura identified eight flowering groves in the Saijo Basin of Higashi-Hiroshima from 2020 to 2021. They reported that flowering began in spring or autumn and that most flowering stands died within a few months. They had not observed seedling regeneration when they reported their findings.

What have studies observed after flowering?

The studies offer complementary snapshots, not a controlled comparison: they covered different places, numbers of stands, observation periods, and definitions of regeneration.

Study Sites and observation What researchers observed What the result establishes
Yamada et al. (2023) One plot in Fukutomi, monitored for three years; more than 80% of culms at the site flowered during that period. No seeds or established seedlings were found. Some ordinary culms and dwarf ramets appeared after flowering, but most died within a year. By year three, all culms in the plot had died and researchers detected no regeneration. No regeneration was detected in that plot during the three-year observation period; this does not establish the outcome at every stand.
Kobayashi et al. (published online 2022) Five flowering stands in Japan. Researchers found many spikelets but no mature seeds or seedlings. Most flowering ramets appeared to die; dwarf ramets, mostly under 1 m tall, typically regrew from remaining belowground rhizomes. Rhizome-based regrowth was observed in the stands studied, but its prevalence across the species is not established.
Ikematsu and Shimamura (2021) Eight groves in the Saijo Basin, observed during 2020–2021. Most flowering stands died within months; seedling regeneration had not been observed when the study was reported. The report documents local flowering and dieback, not a worldwide assessment or a final account of recovery.

These findings should not be collapsed into a claim that every stand recovers or that the species invariably disappears after flowering. The Fukutomi plot had no detected regeneration by the end of its three-year study, while the five-stand study described dwarf ramets regrowing from rhizomes. Different sites, methods, and observation windows may help explain the difference, but the evidence does not settle the species-wide regeneration pathway.

Why does flowering put the stand at risk?

Mass flowering can coincide with substantial investment in reproduction. Kobayashi and colleagues estimated that reproductive parts received 57% of the aboveground nitrogen pool and 63% of the aboveground phosphorus pool during mass flowering. In their five stands, that investment was not followed by mature seed production or observed seedlings.

A separate 2024 study examined the fungus Aciculosporium take in Henon bamboo flower buds. It found fungal stromata in rudimentary florets but not invasion of the ovaries in the material examined. That finding describes where the fungus was found; it does not show that the fungus caused the low seed production reported by other studies.

What remains unknown?

  • What sets the long interval: The physiological mechanism that could time flowering across a century-scale span is not established by the studies cited here.
  • How stands persist: Researchers have reported poor seed production in observed flowering episodes, while one study found dwarf shoots regrowing from rhizomes. How general that rhizome-based recovery is remains unclear.
  • Whether results apply beyond Japan: The field observations summarized here are from Japanese sites, not a worldwide survey.
