HDMI ARC sends audio from a TV to a soundbar or AV receiver over the same HDMI cable used for the display connection. HDMI eARC is the higher-bandwidth version: it can carry uncompressed multichannel audio and lossless formats such as Dolby TrueHD-based Atmos and DTS:X. ARC is usually sufficient for streaming; eARC matters most for UHD Blu-ray, gaming consoles, PCs, media servers, and other high-bandwidth sources.
ARC versus eARC at a glance
| Feature | HDMI ARC | HDMI eARC |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate audio bandwidth | 1 Mb/s | 37 Mb/s |
| Typical capability | Stereo, compressed 5.1 and many streaming formats | Uncompressed 5.1/7.1, multichannel PCM and higher-bitrate formats |
| Dolby Atmos | Compressed Dolby Digital Plus Atmos may work | Supports compatible lossless and compressed Atmos formats |
| Lossless Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA and DTS:X | No through the ARC return path | Yes, when supported by every device |
| Required port | TV HDMI ARC to soundbar/AVR HDMI OUT ARC | TV HDMI eARC to soundbar/AVR HDMI OUT eARC |
The HDMI Forum specifies approximately 1 Mb/s for ARC and up to 37 Mb/s for eARC. eARC also supports audio up to 192 kHz/24-bit, uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1, and up to 32 channels. See the HDMI Forum’s eARC specification overview and its ARC/eARC comparison presentation.

What ARC actually does
In a normal HDMI connection, a source sends video and audio to the TV. Audio Return Channel reverses the audio direction: the TV sends sound back to a soundbar or AV receiver.
That return audio can come from built-in streaming apps, broadcast or cable inputs, and devices connected to the TV’s other HDMI inputs. The cable should run from the TV’s port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC to the audio device’s port labeled HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC), TV-ARC or TV eARC.

ARC does not send video from the soundbar back to the TV. A soundbar’s HDMI output may carry video from devices connected to its HDMI inputs, but ARC itself is an audio-return function. ARC commonly also uses HDMI-CEC for volume control, automatic input selection and power behavior. CEC may have a brand-specific name such as Samsung Anynet+, LG Simplink, Sony Bravia Sync or Panasonic Viera Link.
What eARC adds
eARC provides substantially more audio bandwidth and a more capable device-discovery system. It can transport:
- Uncompressed multichannel PCM, including 5.1 and 7.1;
- Dolby TrueHD and TrueHD-based Dolby Atmos;
- DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X;
- Compressed Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus, including compatible streaming Atmos;
- High-resolution audio up to 192 kHz/24-bit.
Those are transport capabilities, not guarantees. A TV may convert audio, reject DTS, limit passthrough from particular HDMI inputs or handle external devices differently from built-in apps. The source, TV, cable, soundbar or AVR and speakers must all support the desired format.
Can ARC carry Dolby Atmos?
Sometimes. Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio presentation that can be carried in different underlying formats.
- Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos metadata: compressed and common with streaming services; it can often work over ARC.
- Dolby TrueHD with Atmos: lossless and common on UHD Blu-ray; it requires eARC or a direct source-to-soundbar/AVR connection.
- Dolby MAT Atmos: used by some interactive and device-generated sources, including certain Apple TV and console workflows; high-bandwidth versions may not pass through ARC.
Therefore, “ARC cannot do Atmos” is too broad. The accurate answer is that ARC cannot carry every Atmos format. Apple says that Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos does not work over ARC and recommends connecting the Apple TV directly to an eARC-capable soundbar or AVR when necessary. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K audio guidance.

Choosing the connection: use the source and format
TV to soundbar or AVR through ARC/eARC
Use the TV’s ARC or eARC connection when you want TV apps and several HDMI sources routed through one audio cable, provided the TV can pass the formats you need. This is usually the simplest arrangement:
Streaming app or console → TV → HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar or AVR
With eARC, this arrangement is particularly useful when the TV acts as the central HDMI switch and correctly passes multichannel PCM, lossless formats and immersive audio.
Source directly to the soundbar or AVR
Connect a source directly to the audio device when the TV cannot pass through the desired format. This is often the better route for a UHD Blu-ray player, gaming console, PC, media server or Apple TV 4K that needs lossless Atmos, DTS:X or multichannel PCM:
UHD Blu-ray player or console → soundbar/AVR HDMI input → TV
Check that the soundbar or AVR passes the source’s required video features, including resolution, refresh rate, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, VRR or 4K/120 where applicable. Some audio devices support Atmos but do not pass every video mode. Direct wiring can fix audio compatibility while creating a video limitation.
How to connect a TV and soundbar
- Find the TV HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.
- Connect it to the soundbar or AVR port labeled HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) or TV eARC.
- Do not use an ordinary HDMI input on the soundbar for the return-channel connection.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on both devices if volume control or automatic power switching does not work.
- Set the TV’s speaker output to HDMI ARC/eARC, external speakers or the equivalent label.
- Set digital audio output to Passthrough, Bitstream, Auto or the manufacturer’s equivalent rather than PCM stereo.
- Enable eARC, if available, or set it to Auto.
- Select the soundbar’s TV/eARC input if it does not switch automatically.
- Test known multichannel or Atmos content and check the soundbar’s information screen. A missing Atmos badge is not conclusive because some devices do not display one.
Menu names vary by brand and model. Dolby’s soundbar setup guidance also recommends connecting the soundbar’s ARC output to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and using bitstream output when passing Dolby Atmos.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 or a special cable?
eARC is associated with the HDMI 2.1 specification, but “HDMI 2.1” alone is not a reliable way to identify the feature. A product can have HDMI 2.1 video features without eARC, or place eARC on only one port. Check the actual port label and the product specifications for ARC or eARC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou do not automatically need a cable marketed as an “HDMI 2.1 cable” for an audio-only eARC connection. That retail phrase is imprecise. For a new cable or troubleshooting, choose a certified cable with Ethernet and the official certification label. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the sensible choice when the same cable must also carry demanding video such as 4K/120 or 8K. HDMI says some older cables may work with eARC, but older cable types are not necessarily certified for eARC operation. Consult the official HDMI cable certification information.
A cable cannot add eARC to ARC-only hardware, make an ARC-only soundbar decode lossless Atmos or improve ordinary audio quality by itself.
What happens when ARC and eARC devices are mixed?
When the TV has eARC but the soundbar has only ARC, the connection is limited to ARC-level formats if the devices negotiate successfully. The ARC-only soundbar cannot receive eARC-only formats. The same limitation applies in reverse: an eARC soundbar cannot upgrade an ARC-only TV.
eARC is not automatically backward-compatible at the specification level; manufacturer implementation matters. Sony’s support explanation likewise notes that an ARC-only soundbar connected to an eARC TV remains limited to ARC-format specifications.

ARC/eARC versus optical
Optical audio can be a useful fallback for stereo and some compressed surround formats. It does not provide HDMI-CEC integration and cannot carry the same high-bandwidth formats as eARC. Use optical when HDMI negotiation is unreliable or the TV lacks ARC, but prefer HDMI ARC/eARC for integrated control and multichannel compatibility.
Why eARC may not sound better
eARC is a transport capability, not an audio-enhancement mode. Switching from ARC to eARC may make no audible difference when the content is stereo or compressed Dolby Digital Plus. Its benefit is preserving formats that ARC cannot transport.
An audible improvement depends on the source format, the TV’s passthrough behavior, the soundbar or AVR’s decoding, the speakers, the room and listening conditions. Lossless transmission does not automatically make every soundtrack sound different.

No sound
- Verify that the cable connects the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV-ARC port.
- Select the soundbar’s TV/eARC input.
- Enable CEC on both devices.
- Choose external speakers or HDMI ARC/eARC as the TV output.
- Set digital audio to Auto, Passthrough or Bitstream.
- Turn off both devices, unplug them briefly, reconnect HDMI and turn on the TV first, then the soundbar.
- Try a different certified HDMI cable and test a built-in TV app.
- Install applicable manufacturer firmware updates.
Sound is stereo instead of surround
The TV may be set to PCM, the source may be outputting stereo, the content may not be multichannel, or the TV may be converting an unsupported format. Confirm Bitstream, Auto or Passthrough at the source and TV. On consoles and PCs, enable multichannel output and confirm that the HDMI audio device is identified correctly.

Atmos does not appear
Check the title, app, subscription tier and region first. Then check the TV output mode, the soundbar’s capabilities and whether the TV can pass the source’s Atmos format. The source may need to connect directly to the soundbar or AVR. Also remember that a soundbar may decode Atmos without showing an Atmos badge, while a visible logo on the soundbar does not prove the entire chain is delivering it.

Audio drops out or HDMI handshakes fail
Power off all HDMI devices, disconnect the ARC/eARC cable, power-cycle the TV and soundbar, reconnect the cable to the labeled ports, and enable CEC and eARC. Test with only the TV and soundbar connected, then add other sources one at a time. Damaged cables, CEC conflicts, firmware bugs and source-to-TV passthrough problems are common causes.
Lip-sync is wrong
eARC improves capability discovery and includes lip-sync-related functions, but synchronization still depends on the complete video and audio chain. First verify the connection and output mode, then use the TV’s or soundbar’s audio-delay control.
Should you prioritize eARC when buying?
ARC is enough for ordinary streaming, broadcast television, a basic stereo or compressed 5.1 soundbar, and a simple one-cable setup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Do not pay extra for eARC alone if the soundbar is basic, all your content is compressed streaming audio, or the real limitation is speaker placement, room acoustics or incorrect settings. Also verify the TV’s actual passthrough behavior: eARC does not guarantee that every connected source will emerge unchanged.
