Hatsushima Station in Arida City, Wakayama Prefecture, was described as the world’s first 3D-printed train station. The headline’s “six hours” refers to the planned overnight assembly of prefabricated components at the site—not the time needed to design, print and prepare the building. The components were made off-site, reinforced and then brought to the station for installation.
What the six-hour claim means
JR West estimated that the on-site construction window would take approximately six hours, between the last train at night and the first train the following morning, according to New Atlas’s March 17, 2025 report. That is a short installation interval intended to limit disruption to rail service. It is not a full project timeline.

The station was not printed at Hatsushima during that window. A Mashable video transcript published May 8, 2025 says Serendix printed four parts at a factory, reinforced them with concrete for seven days, transported them by truck and assembled them at the station. Design, factory production, curing or reinforcement, transport and site work are distinct stages; only the final on-site assembly is covered by the six-hour figure.
Where the station is and what it replaced
Hatsushima Station serves Arida City in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. The project brought together West Japan Railway Company (JR West), its innovation arm JR West Innovations, and construction 3D-printing company Serendix. The new building replaced an older wooden station structure that dated to 1948, according to 3DPrint.com’s April 17, 2025 report.

Coverage has called it the “world’s first” 3D-printed train station. That is the project’s reported description, not the result of a documented global survey of every station.
How the building was designed and made
New Atlas reported dimensions of 2.6 metres high, 6.3 metres wide and 2.1 metres deep, based on JR West project material. 3DPrint.com described a single-storey building with an area just under 10 square metres. Those are two reported descriptions of the compact structure, rather than a published technical specification covering every feature.

The exterior incorporates local imagery: mandarin oranges, known as mikan, and cutlassfish, or tachiuo. New Atlas describes the structure as reinforced concrete and attributes claims about durability, corrosion resistance, avoiding formwork and design flexibility to JR West. These are stated project benefits, not independently reported performance results.
What the project may—and may not—prove
Off-site fabrication followed by a brief overnight installation offers a potential way to reduce the time a railway site is occupied. The project also proposes benefits such as lower labor needs, flexible shapes and less maintenance. But a short site window alone does not establish that the overall build was faster or cheaper: factory production and the reported seven-day reinforcement period happened outside that window.

The reports available in 2025 did not provide verified comparisons of cost, labor productivity, emissions, durability or maintenance against a conventionally built station. Mashable’s May 2025 report specifically noted that efficiency and cost data had not been released. 3DPrint.com said JR West and Serendix planned to study costs and upkeep before considering the approach at other stations. Until comparable results are published, the proposed advantages should be treated as project aims, not proven savings.

New Atlas reported on March 17, 2025, that construction was scheduled for March 25. 3DPrint.com later reported that the building had been assembled in March and that interior work was planned before a passenger opening in July 2025. These are dated reports and plans; they do not establish the station’s current operating status or confirm a later decision to use the method elsewhere.
