For many shop cuts, a properly sized band saw is a strong choice; a reciprocating saw can handle rough cuts when its rated capacity is sufficient. Logs call for chainsaw-specific methods, not shop-saw advice.
Choose a tool that fits the stock and the cut
Before choosing a saw, identify whether you are cutting shop lumber, a branch or log, or another material. Measure the stock’s thickness and width, note any curves or awkward projections, and decide whether the cut needs to be precise or merely remove material. Then check the saw’s capacity, blade compatibility, workpiece support and guarding in the manufacturer’s manual. A tool category alone does not establish that a particular model can make the cut safely.
| Tool | Best-supported use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Band saw | Irregular shop cuts and controlled curves. | Cutting height and throat, suitable blade, stable stock support and functioning guards. |
| Reciprocating saw | Fast, rough cuts where finish precision is secondary. | Model-specific cutting depth, blade length and material compatibility. Bosch lists up to 200 mm wood cutting depth for its PSA 900 E; that figure applies to that model, not all reciprocating saws (Bosch PSA 900 E specifications). |
| Jigsaw | Intricate curves and patterns in thinner stock. | Blade suitability and stock thickness. OSHA describes handheld jigsaws as useful for intricate work in thin stock, so they are not the default choice for thick pieces (OSHA jigsaw guidance). |
| Chainsaw | Crosscutting logs or thick trunks in an outdoor or logging context. | Log tension, stance, guide-bar pinch and kickback hazards; use chainsaw-specific training and procedures. |
When a band saw makes sense
A band saw is a strong shop candidate for irregular shapes and curved cuts if the work fits the machine. SKIL lists its 9-inch BW9501-00 for irregular shapes and ripping lumber into thinner pieces, but that product description does not mean its capacity suits every thick workpiece (SKIL BW9501-00 product listing). Confirm the actual cutting height and throat of the saw you plan to use, along with blade suitability and stable support for the stock.
When a reciprocating saw is more practical
A reciprocating saw may be appropriate when speed and access matter more than a smooth edge. Check the individual saw’s rated wood-cutting depth and pair it with a compatible blade long enough for the stock. The Bosch PSA 900 E’s listed 200 mm wood-cutting depth is a model-specific specification, not a promise that every saw or blade will cut that deep in every condition.

Why a jigsaw is usually not the thick-stock answer
OSHA characterizes handheld jigsaws as tools for intricate curves and patterns in thin stock. A narrow blade can help negotiate a sharp turn, but the saw and blade must still suit the material and its thickness. For thick stock, assess a band saw or a suitable rough-cut tool instead of assuming a jigsaw can handle the job.
Set up a band saw for an irregular cut
Use the machine manual as the authority for setup. CCOHS recommends selecting a sharp blade with an appropriate tooth pitch, tooth form and width; checking the blade’s condition and tracking; and holding the work flat and firmly. It advises setting the upper guard about 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4 inch) above the material. That is CCOHS guidance, and the manual and local requirements take precedence for your machine and workplace (CCOHS band-saw safety guidance).

- Check the setup. Inspect blade condition and tracking, confirm the blade is suitable for the cut, and set the guard according to the machine manual.
- Stabilize the work. Support the stock so it rests flat and cannot rock or shift during the cut. Do not attempt a cut with an unsupported or unstable workpiece.
- Plan the curve. For a tight curve, make relief cuts toward the intended cut line before following the curve. This removes waste and reduces the chance that the blade will bind as you turn.
- Feed steadily. Keep hands clear of the cut line and do not force the stock through the blade. Follow the planned path without twisting or pushing harder to compensate for a blade that is struggling.
- Stop if the stock binds. If the work pinches or binds, do not pull it back while the blade is moving. Stop the saw, wait for the blade to come to a complete stop, then remove the work.
Keep guarding and workpiece control central
Guarding depends on the machine, operation, and stock size and shape. OSHA says woodworking machines should not be operated when guards or safety devices are not functioning; choose and use safeguards suited to the operation rather than treating one setup as universal (OSHA woodworking saw guidance). A guide cannot make an unsuitable machine or an inadequately supported workpiece safe.
For handheld saws, OSHA advises using the proper blade, maintaining sharp blades, and wearing eye and face protection. With a jigsaw, turn slowly and use a narrow blade for sharp turns (OSHA jigsaw guidance). Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and the protective-equipment rules for your worksite.

Treat log crosscuts as a separate job
A log is not simply irregular shop stock: internal tension can cause the cut to close or the wood to split, and chainsaw hazards require their own procedures. Husqvarna advises assessing log tension and standing to the side of the cut. Its guidance describes a meeting cut that begins on the compression side before cutting from the opposite side to reduce splitting risk (Husqvarna guidance on crosscutting logs). This is specialized chainsaw advice for logs; do not apply it automatically to a band saw or another shop-saw setup.

If the stock’s material, dimensions, cut direction or required finish are unclear, those details need to be settled before selecting a tool or procedure. For shop lumber and controlled curves, start by checking whether a band saw’s capacity and setup suit the piece. For rough cuts, consider a reciprocating saw only after verifying the model’s rating and blade compatibility. For a log, use chainsaw-specific guidance and training.
