For a U.S. homeowner, Angi’s August 2026 guide estimates a new installation at $630–$1,740, while This Old House’s June 2026 guide puts installation at $12–$62 per linear foot. These are planning estimates from different publishers—not bids or a single national price schedule. Use a measured, itemized local quote to compare equivalent work.
What gutters do—and when installation matters
Gutters collect rainwater running off the roof and direct it through downspouts away from the foundation, siding and landscaping. Missing, damaged or poorly flowing gutters can contribute to pooling and water damage. Installation may mean adding a system to a home without one or replacing an existing system that is no longer working reliably.
Look for broken or disconnected downspouts, multiple cracks or gaps, rust or chipped paint, sagging sections, and water damage to siding, fascia, soffits or roof sections. These signs can point to replacement; a contractor can assess whether a localized repair is sufficient.
How much does gutter installation cost?
Published estimates differ because they use different project assumptions and scopes. Angi’s August 22, 2026 guide estimates $630–$1,740 for a new gutter installation. This Old House’s guide, updated June 17, 2026, estimates $12–$62 per linear foot and gives $2,303–$12,067 as an example for 200 linear feet on a 2,000-square-foot home. These figures should not be averaged: the sources do not establish one comparable national price or identical scope.

Your actual estimate depends on measured linear footage, material and system style, roof height and complexity, local labor and material availability, and whether the job includes removal, disposal, drainage components or repairs. A home’s square footage is only a rough starting point. This Old House suggests dividing house square footage by 10 to estimate gutter linear feet, but recommends professional measurement for accuracy.
Compare estimates on the same basis
Ask each contractor to state the measured quantities and itemize material and labor. Check that proposals cover the same system, removal and disposal, downspouts, extras and repairs before comparing totals. A lower figure may reflect a narrower scope rather than a better price.
DIY or professional installation?
DIY may reduce labor expense, but it also puts measurement, fit, pitch, secure attachment and safe roof access on the homeowner. Tool costs, time, roof height and complexity matter. Sectional gutters use precut pieces assembled on site; seamless gutters are cut to length on site with specialized equipment and generally require professional installation.

This Old House’s May 28, 2026 DIY guide estimates materials at $2–$31 per linear foot. Its comparison table gives a DIY range of $2.15–$31.43 per foot, or $430–$6,268 for 200 linear feet, and a professional range of $11.92–$61.84 per foot, or $2,384–$12,368 for 200 linear feet. These are that publisher’s estimates; material choice drives the wide spread, and location, tools and project conditions can change a budget.

This Old House quotes Amna Salman, Ph.D., assistant professor at the McWhorter School of Building Science: “DIY gutter installation is possible, especially with sectional gutters, and can save on labor costs,” For professional work, she says: “However, hiring a professional is often worth the investment for a precise fit, particularly with seamless gutters. Professionals bring expertise in correct gutter pitch, alignment, and secure attachment, and they also have the right equipment for safe roof access.” Warranty availability varies by contractor, so confirm material and workmanship coverage in writing.
When DIY may be a reasonable fit
- The project uses sectional components and the roofline and access are manageable.
- You can measure accurately, follow the product-specific instructions and establish safe ladder or roof access.
- You have accounted for compatible parts, tools, time and the consequences of leaks, poor pitch or insecure attachment.
When professional installation may be the better choice
- The home is multi-story, the roofline is complex, or safe access requires equipment you do not have.
- You want seamless gutters, which require specialized on-site cutting equipment.
- You want a contractor to handle measurement, installation, removal, possible repairs and any written warranty terms.
What a DIY installation involves
This is general orientation, not a substitute for the instructions supplied with the gutter system or a safe-access plan. Parts commonly include gutter sections, end caps, hangers, downspouts, elbows, extensions, miters, optional guards or screens, and splash blocks. Typical tools and supplies include a measuring tape, sturdy ladder, gloves, chalk line, hacksaw or tin snips, drill, screws or brackets, and water-resistant sealant. Match every part to the dimensions and system you choose; no particular kit or product has been validated here.

- Measure the run and plan drainage. Establish gutter lengths, corners and downspout locations. Follow the system instructions for layout and component spacing.
- Mark the pitch. A chalk line on the fascia can mark the intended fall toward the downspout. Use the slope and fastening method specified for your system.
- Prepare and join sections. Cut sections as required. A typical process may include crimping and sealing an end cap, then joining compatible sections according to the manufacturer’s directions.
- Make the outlet and attach the run. Mark and cut the outlet hole, then secure the gutter with the specified hangers or brackets. Check alignment and attachment as you work.
- Fit the downspout and check flow. Connect elbows and extensions, then flush the system with water to check for leaks and confirm that water moves toward and through the downspout.
Do not proceed if you cannot safely reach the work area. A poor fit, insufficient pitch or loose attachment can undermine the system’s function; complex or elevated work is a strong reason to hire an installer.

How to maintain gutters after installation
Adapt inspection and cleaning to nearby trees, weather and local conditions. Angi’s checklist suggests flushing in spring, checking for sagging or leaks in summer, and clearing debris in fall, particularly before winter. Inspect for rust and check that water flows through the downspouts. After cleaning or repair, flushing the system can help reveal blockages or leaks.
