To find out whether grubs are behind a brown or thinning lawn, lift a small patch of damaged turf and inspect the roots, thatch and soil for pale, C-shaped beetle larvae. Don’t treat just because you find a few: healthy turf can tolerate some feeding, and the right response depends on the grub species, lawn condition and local guidance.

How to check whether grubs are damaging your lawn

Brown patches and thinning grass can have causes other than grubs, so inspect before choosing a treatment. At the edge of a damaged area, use a spade or similar tool to lift a small section of turf. Look through the roots, thatch and upper soil for pale, C-shaped beetle larvae. Replace the turf sample and water the area after you finish.

An occasional grub is normal. Finding one does not prove it is responsible for the damage or mean your lawn needs treatment; turf quality and grub species both affect how much root feeding a lawn can tolerate. The University of New Hampshire Extension’s white grub fact sheet explains why damage thresholds vary rather than following one count that applies to every lawn.

When identification is uncertain

White grub species can look alike. Size alone may mislead because a grub’s size changes as it develops; the pattern of hairs and spines on its underside, called the raster, can help distinguish species. If you cannot identify it confidently, ask your local extension service or a qualified diagnostic provider, and share a clear photo or sample. See the University of Maryland Extension’s identification guidance.

Should you treat grubs you find?

Not automatically. First consider whether the lawn is actually suffering damage and whether the grub is the likely cause. A few larvae beneath turf that is otherwise healthy may not justify intervention. Thresholds depend on grub species and turf condition, so avoid applying a treatment based on a generic online count.

Local recommendations matter because beetle species and seasonal timing vary by region. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension’s white grub control guidance distinguishes timing by species; its recommendations are regional, not a calendar to apply everywhere. Check your local extension advice and the product label before acting.

Natural options for white grubs

Beneficial nematodes

Entomopathogenic nematodes are microscopic roundworms that attack certain insect pests. They can be a biological control option, but the species must match the target grub. Maryland Extension identifies Heterorhabditis bacteriophora as useful against Japanese beetle and masked chafer grubs, and notes that Steinernema scarabaei has shown control of several grub species. No single nematode controls every white grub.

Nematodes are living organisms, so storage and application conditions matter. They generally do best in moist, loamy soil rich in organic matter; dry or clay soils can reduce effectiveness. Apply in low light, such as at dusk, dawn or on a cloudy day, then water as directed on the product label to move them into the root zone. Results vary, and field performance can be inconsistent. Consult Maryland Extension’s white grub guidance and Cornell’s insect management information when weighing this option.

  • Scotts GrubEx1 Season Long Grub Killer can help prevent turf damage by killing grubs when they are young
  • One application of this lawn care treatment kills and prevents grubs for up to 4 months

If you consider buying beneficial nematodes for white grubs, look for the nematode species on the label and confirm that it is recommended for the grub you have. Check storage, handling and application directions, as well as local advice; do not assume a product works against all grubs.

Milky spore

Milky spore, or Paenibacillus popilliae, is not a general-purpose white grub treatment. Commercial strains are associated with Japanese beetle grubs, but Maryland Extension reports that commercially available spores have not effectively suppressed Japanese beetle grub populations in turfgrass. Penn State Extension likewise cautions that viable commercial spores work only on Japanese beetle grubs. Read Maryland Extension’s guidance and Penn State Extension’s discussion of white grubs before considering milky spore.

Help the lawn recover

Sound lawn care can help turf withstand some root feeding, while a badly damaged area may need repair. Reseed as needed, and choose grass, irrigation and timing based on your region and existing lawn rather than assuming one prescription fits all. If the cause of the damage is unclear, get a local diagnosis before treating; a garden spade is enough to inspect a small patch, and no specialized tool is necessary.

Choosing a response

Option Best fit Key limitation
Monitor and maintain the lawn A few grubs are present but turf is healthy or damage is uncertain. Does not repair areas already badly damaged; reassess if symptoms continue.
Beneficial nematodes The nematode species is appropriate for the identified or likely grub, and soil and handling conditions suit application. Results depend on species match, storage, moisture and soil; performance can be inconsistent.
Milky spore Only where Japanese beetle grubs are the target and local advice supports its use. It is not a broad-spectrum grub control; extension guidance reports limits to commercial efficacy in turfgrass.

These options are not interchangeable. Compare the target grub, local evidence and timing, soil moisture and texture, storage requirements, and whether the label supports the intended use. For regional timing and current product advice, consult your local extension service; Wisconsin’s recommendations, for example, are specific to its region and differ by beetle species.
