To grow plants under lights, match the fixture’s output and daily schedule to the plant and its stage of growth, then keep the light at an appropriate, adjustable distance. For many home setups, an LED or fluorescent shop-light fixture is sufficient; a dedicated grow light is not always necessary. Seedlings, foliage houseplants, and flowering plants have different starting recommendations, so one distance or timer setting will not suit every plant.
Choose a light for the plants you are growing
Indoor light can be much dimmer than outdoor sunlight, and plants need suitable light intensity as well as useful wavelengths. Illinois Extension explains light intensity for houseplants in foot-candles and discusses how bulb types differ (Illinois Extension’s houseplant lighting guide).
For supplemental lighting, University of Minnesota Extension recommends fluorescent or LED fixtures for starting seedlings rather than relying only on natural light. Utah State University Extension notes that a simple shop-light fixture with fluorescent or LED bulbs can work; what matters is that it provides appropriate light for the plants and area (UMN’s seed-starting guide; Utah State’s materials guide).
- For seedlings: An LED grow light or LED/fluorescent shop light can provide supplemental light. Utah State Extension gives a seedling-specific typical range of 200–400 µmol/m²/s PPFD (photosynthetic photon flux density); do not treat that figure as a target for every houseplant.
- For established houseplants: A suitable LED or fluorescent fixture can supplement weak window light. Match the setup to the plant’s category and response rather than assuming every indoor plant needs the same intensity.
Plants use red and blue wavelengths for photosynthesis, but a red- or blue-only bulb is not automatically the best choice. UMN Extension says white or balanced light is suitable for most plants at any growth stage. When comparing fixtures, look for coverage that spans the plants, adjustable mounting, useful light-output information, and a safe operating distance for that fixture.

How far should grow lights be from plants?
Use these University of Minnesota Extension distances as starting ranges, not guarantees for every fixture. Output and heat vary, so follow any plant-specific or manufacturer guidance for the light you use.
| Plant category | Starting distance from plant tops |
|---|---|
| Seedlings | 4–6 inches on UMN’s general indoor-lighting page; its seed-starting guidance recommends no more than 4 inches, with 2 inches described as ideal. |
| Hydroponic lettuce and herbs | 6–12 inches |
| Foliage houseplants | 12–24 inches |
| Flowering houseplants | 6–12 inches |
The two UMN seedling recommendations reflect different guidance contexts, not a single exact distance for every lamp. Start with the seed-starting guidance when growing seedlings, and adjust based on the fixture and the plants’ response. Keep the fixture adjustable so you can raise it as seedlings grow while maintaining the appropriate gap.

How many hours should plants be under grow lights?
Set a daily schedule for the plant category and include a dark period. UMN Extension’s examples are:
| Plant category | UMN suggested daily lighting period |
|---|---|
| Seedlings | 16–18 hours on its indoor-lighting page |
| Hydroponic lettuce and herbs | 12–14 hours |
| Foliage houseplants | 12–14 hours |
| Flowering houseplants | 14–16 hours |
For seedlings, UMN’s separate seed-starting guidance gives 12–16 hours per day. Illinois Extension says 14–16 hours can be sufficient in low light for the plants discussed on its houseplant page and cautions against exceeding 16 hours there. These recommendations differ by context and plant category; do not apply one schedule to all plants or assume longer lighting is always better.

A plug-in timer makes it easier to keep a consistent daily period. If a seed-starting bench can be placed near a window, Utah State Extension suggests using natural sunlight to supplement the artificial light.
How to set up lights for seedlings
- Choose a fixture that covers the growing area. A fluorescent or LED shop light may be sufficient; use the manufacturer’s coverage and output information to judge whether it suits the number of trays or plants.
- Place it close to the seedlings. UMN’s seed-starting page recommends no more than 4 inches above the tops and describes 2 inches as ideal. Check the fixture’s heat and safety guidance rather than assuming every light can be placed at the same distance.
- Set a daily schedule. UMN’s seed-starting recommendation is 12–16 hours daily; its indoor-lighting page gives 16–18 hours for seedlings. Use the guidance that fits your setup and plant needs, and provide a dark period.
- Raise the fixture as seedlings grow. Keep the light close enough for the seedlings without allowing contact or disregarding fixture safety instructions.
- Use a timer if helpful. Set it to switch the light on and off at consistent times, then reassess the plants as they develop.
What leggy growth can tell you
Long, thin stems and elongated spaces between leaves can indicate insufficient light. UMN Extension identifies inadequate light as a major cause of elongated, skinny seedling stems; Illinois Extension describes “leggy” growth as elongated internodes associated with absent or low-intensity light.

Before changing the setup, check the distance between the light and plant tops, the daily lighting period, whether the fixture covers the growing area, and whether the plant category calls for different conditions. Growth is a useful clue, but it does not by itself identify which part of the setup needs adjustment.

- Coverage: Does the light span the entire area where the plants are growing?
- Adjustability: Can you raise or reposition it as plants grow?
- Output information: Does the manufacturer provide useful plant-light measurements for the fixture?
- Heat and safety: Can the fixture operate safely at the distance needed for your plants?
- Scheduling: Can you maintain the appropriate daily period, with a timer if convenient?
These are comparison criteria, not a claim that a particular brand or model is best. The extension guidance supports category-level choices such as LED grow lights and fluorescent or LED shop lights, but does not establish specifications for individual products.
