Five drought-tolerant plants identified by Utah State University Extension as good candidates for sandy soils are Utah agave (Agave utahensis), Apache plume (Fallugia paradoxa), singleleaf ash (Fraxinus anomala), cliffrose (Purshia mexicana) and fernbush (Chamaebatiaria millefolium). The list is grounded in Utah conditions; it is a starting point for gardeners in Utah and places with comparable soils and climates, not a universal hardiness guide. Check each plant against your local winter conditions and site before planting.
Five plants to consider for sandy loam
Utah State University Extension names these five drought-tolerant plants as options for sandy soils. Its guidance supports their suitability as candidates, but does not rank them or establish hardiness zones, mature sizes, bloom details, or full growing requirements for each. See USU Extension’s guidance on gardening in sandy soils.
- Utah agave (Agave utahensis)
- Apache plume (Fallugia paradoxa)
- Singleleaf ash (Fraxinus anomala)
- Cliffrose (Purshia mexicana)
- Fernbush (Chamaebatiaria millefolium)
“Hardy” does not mean winter-proof everywhere. Before choosing one, confirm local winter hardiness, sun exposure, expected mature size and water needs after establishment with a regional extension service or reliable botanical source. The right choice also depends on how quickly your particular site drains.
How sandy loam affects plant care
Sandy loam contains a mixture of soil particles; it is not the same as pure sand. Sandy soils tend to move water downward quickly, while loamy soil spreads it down and outward through the root zone. Texture affects drainage, aeration, water-holding capacity and nutrient storage, as Oregon State University Extension soils instructor James Cassidy explains. Read OSU Extension’s explanation of soil texture.
#1 Best Overall
- You will receive (1) 1.5-cubic foot bags of potting soil with 2 plant tags to easily label varieties and planting dates with per purchase.
- Ready for immediate use, no additional ingredients are required. This bag is designed to be ready for planting upon purchase
- Ingredients like aged forest products and peat moss help increase effectiveness in retaining moisture. Sandy loam, also in Ocean Forest, has excellent drainage properties
- Ideal for container gardens, houseplants, trees, shrubs, roses, and even seedlings. The rich ingredients in Ocean Forest may provide the proper environment for seedlings to become vigorous plants
- Ingredients include 50-60% aged forest products, sphagnum peat moss, perlite, sandy loam, and fertilizer. Derived from fish meal, crab meal, shrimp meal, earthworm castings, and oyster shell
Because water and nutrients may not remain available to roots as long in sandy soils as in finer soils, USU Extension advises adding organic matter to improve water-holding and nutrient-retention capacity. The amount and type of amendment depend on the site; there is no universal application rate established for these five plants.
Watering should respond to conditions across the root zone rather than to the label “sandy loam” alone. Soil texture, drainage, climate and irrigation all affect how quickly a planting dries. Even moisture through the root zone supports deeper roots, but the available guidance does not provide a watering schedule for each species.

Test the soil before making adjustments
A soil test can help identify pH and nutrient levels before planting, giving you time to make appropriate adjustments. Choose a home soil test kit based on the measurements it actually provides and its stated accuracy; not every kit assesses the same properties. For advice on interpreting results, use a local extension service. OSU Extension explains soil testing.
Sandy soils may need more frequent fertilization, according to USU Extension, but that general observation is not a fixed schedule. Use soil-test results and local guidance rather than applying fertilizer by guesswork.

How to choose among the five
- Winter fit: Verify that the species and any selected cultivar can tolerate your local winter conditions.
- Site fit: Check sun exposure and mature size against the planting location.
- Water fit: Confirm establishment and ongoing water needs; drought tolerance does not mean a plant needs no water.
- Soil fit: Compare your garden’s actual drainage and texture with the conditions described by local experts.
- Amendment needs: Use a soil test to guide decisions about pH, nutrients and organic matter.
The cited list establishes sandy-soil suitability and drought-tolerant framing, not a best-to-worst ranking. Local growing conditions should decide which candidate belongs in a particular garden.
