Plants can bring a visible nature cue into a workspace, and gardening may support well-being. But the evidence does not show that adding a desk plant reliably improves workplace productivity. The result depends on the kind of nature contact and the outcome being measured—and gardening is a more active experience than simply seeing a houseplant.
Do indoor plants improve focus or productivity?
Research suggests indoor plants may be associated with some cognitive and physiological benefits, but the evidence is not strong enough to promise better focus or output from a plant on a desk. A 2022 systematic review included 42 records, while its meta-analyses covered only 16; analyses of particular outcomes sometimes drew on just two or three studies. The overall findings were positive, especially for relaxed physiology and cognition, but the small number of studies for some outcomes limits confidence. Read the 2022 review, “Effects of Indoor Plants on Human Functions”.
A useful reality check comes from a 2020 office-plant study. Participants in a laboratory performed better on three performance measures when plants were present, but two call-centre field studies did not reproduce that result. The field exposures lasted six and 14 weeks, respectively. These findings apply to those call-centre settings; they do not prove plants cannot help in other workplaces. What workplace nature research finds
Nature at work can mean more than indoor plants: it may include outdoor exposure and other ways of encountering nature. A 2023 systematic review of restorative workplace nature exposure included 16 studies from 1,225 initially identified articles. The authors described a limited evidence base and noted that studies did not adequately assess sensory dimensions of nature exposure. That makes it difficult to isolate which features of nature, or which kinds of contact, matter most. Read the 2023 review by Gonçalves and colleagues.

A separate 2020 review considered workplace nature-based interventions. It included 10 interventions across nine papers from 510 records identified. The review found consistently positive results for mental-health indices and cognitive ability, while other outcome groups had mixed findings. The underlying studies also had a high risk of bias, so these findings are promising rather than definitive. Read the review by Gritzka and colleagues.
How gardening differs from having a plant nearby
Gardening and horticultural therapy involve participation, not just passive exposure to a plant. Depending on the activity, they may involve movement, routine, sensory experiences and caring tasks. A 2024 umbrella review included 40 studies and reported a positive association between gardening and horticultural therapy activities and well-being in its meta-analysis subsample (effect size 0.55; 95% confidence interval 0.23–0.87; p < 0.001). The review also found high heterogeneity: the interventions and studies varied, so the pooled result does not establish that any single component caused the benefit or support direct clinical conclusions. Choosing a realistic way to bring nature into a workspace
If you want to try a plant, treat it as a modest environmental change, not a productivity treatment. Choose one that suits the available light and the amount of care you are willing to provide. You can observe whether it makes the workspace more pleasant for you, but do not assume that a plant will improve concentration, job satisfaction or work output.
If you want a more active nature experience, gardening is a different option from keeping a plant in view. The well-being evidence concerns varied gardening and horticultural activities, not a guarantee that one particular routine or task will have the same effect for everyone.
