Grow Like a Roman: Medicinal Herbs for a Caligula-Inspired Garden

Create a Roman-inspired herb garden with historically grounded plant examples and modern growing guidance—without mistaking general Roman herb use for evidence about Caligula’s own garden.

You can build a Roman-inspired herb garden from plants documented in broader Roman culinary and medicinal contexts—but the available sources do not identify herbs grown in a garden belonging to Caligula. Treat the title as inspiration, not a claim about his personal garden. A sunny Mediterranean-style bed can still bring ancient food traditions to life while keeping historical medicinal use separate from modern health advice.

What can we say about Caligula’s garden?

The sources reviewed for this article do not document a garden belonging to Caligula or name plants he grew. The Roman herb examples below come from a broader account of herbs used across the Roman Empire, not a list tied to the emperor. Sapienza University of Rome’s history of medicinal gardens discusses a medieval herb garden associated with Pope Nicholas III, centuries after Caligula; it is a separate historical chapter, not evidence about his garden. Sapienza University of Rome’s Botanical Garden history and the University of Chicago Press preview of Roman Herbs provide those distinct contexts.

Which herbs suit a Roman-inspired planting?

A broad Roman herb tradition offers plenty of options for a culinary and educational garden. The University of Chicago Press preview of Roman Herbs names aniseed, basil, chervil, cilantro, dill, fennel, garlic, lovage, marjoram, mint, myrtle, parsley, purslane, arugula, saffron, sorrel, and thyme. Its discussion also identifies cumin, orache, rosemary, and violet in a medicinal list, while noting that several herbs also used in cooking had medicinal contexts.

These categories overlap: historical culinary use and historical medicinal use are not mutually exclusive. The examples describe Roman-era herb culture broadly, not a Caligula-specific inventory.

Sage in a Roman-era context

The University of Ioannina’s Museum of the History of Medicine presents sage in an ancient Roman context and refers to it as highly appreciated, displaying the phrase “herba sacra.” This is the museum’s historical presentation; it should not be mistaken for a verified quotation from a particular ancient text. What Roman cooking examples can inspire the bed?

The Roman Herbs preview uses Apicius to illustrate ways herbs could appear in Roman cookery. Field herbs might be served raw with broth, oil, and vinegar or cooked with cumin. It also describes preparations made by pounding cilantro, fennel, lovage, and mint. These examples can guide a themed kitchen garden, but they do not establish Caligula’s personal menu.

How to plan a modern Roman-inspired herb bed

The following is present-day horticultural guidance, not a reconstruction of an ancient imperial garden. The Roman Herbs preview identifies basil, hyssop, marjoram, oregano, savory, and thyme as Mediterranean herbs suited to hot, dry summers. It defines a sunny site as receiving seven or more hours of sunshine a day. Mint, sorrel, sweet cicely, and sweet woodruff are described there as shade-loving herbs.

Planting group Examples Guidance in the source
Hot, dry-summer herbs Basil, hyssop, marjoram, oregano, savory, thyme Identified as Mediterranean herbs that can thrive in hot, dry summers; a sunny site means seven or more hours of daily sunshine.
Shade-loving herbs Mint, sorrel, sweet cicely, sweet woodruff Described as shade-loving; the preview does not state a specific number of shade hours.

Use those groupings as a starting point, then check the requirements for your local climate, soil, cultivar, and watering conditions. For a practical Roman-inspired planting, choose seeds of culinary herbs such as basil, oregano, marjoram, and thyme; the historical sources do not verify any particular product or seed supplier.

How should you interpret the medicinal history?

Historical use tells you that people valued plants in particular medical traditions; it does not demonstrate that a plant treats a condition effectively or establish a safe modern dose. The Royal Horticultural Society’s Healing Garden collection discusses the long history of medicinal plant use and historical herbals, while the Ioannina museum places herbs in the history of medicine. Use this garden as a culinary or educational project, not as a substitute for medical advice or treatment.
