Gridfinity is a modular, 3D-printed tool-storage system that lets you build a baseplate and interchangeable bins instead of committing to one fixed organizer. Its practical benefit is fast retrieval today and easy reconfiguration when the workshop changes.

What Gridfinity is—and why it makes tools faster to find

Gridfinity is a modular, 3D-printed storage system for drawers, benches, cabinets, and parts shelves. Instead of buying one fixed organizer, you print a baseplate and a collection of interchangeable bins or tool holders. When your workshop changes, you can rearrange the layout or print only the new modules you need.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes Gridfinity particularly useful on construction and fabrication jobsites, in maintenance shops, and in home workshops where screws, drivers, bits, measuring tools, electrical components, and consumables otherwise end up in mixed boxes. The goal is not simply to store tools. It is to make the correct tool or part visible and immediately retrievable, then make resetting the workspace just as easy.

How the Gridfinity system works

The commonly used Gridfinity geometry is based on a 42 mm × 42 mm horizontal grid with height measured in 7 mm vertical increments. A baseplate contains sockets or recesses that locate the printed bins. Each bin occupies one or more grid cells, so a small container can be exchanged for a wider, deeper, divided, or tool-specific module without replacing the whole base.

SUNLU PLA Filament 1.75mm, 250g Spool Bundle, 3D Printer Filament
  • 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
  • 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
  • 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
  • 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
  • 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
  • Baseplate: The fixed or semi-fixed interface installed in a drawer, on a shelf, or on a work surface.
  • Bins and blocks: Removable containers sized to one or more grid units.
  • Dividers: Useful for fasteners, connectors, fittings, and other small parts.
  • Tool holders: Custom modules shaped for drivers, cutters, calipers, sockets, scissors, or other irregular tools.
  • Labels, lids, and inserts: Optional additions that improve identification, protection, or organization.
  • Retention hardware: Optional magnets, clips, screws, or pressure-fit features, depending on the design.

The block is slightly undersized compared with the nominal 42 mm cell. That clearance allows it to drop into and out of the baseplate instead of binding. The baseplate lip and socket provide positional control. In practical terms, the baseplate is the reusable interface and the bins are replaceable components.

Gridfinity is a design ecosystem, not one boxed product

Zack Freedman publicly introduced Gridfinity on April 12, 2022. The initial project included downloadable divider bins, trays, window bins, baseplates, printer-mount plates, and holders for tools such as calipers, ratchets, sockets, drivers, picks, tweezers, nippers, and scissors.

Since then, the community has expanded the system with additional bins, lids, adapters, drawers, organizers, online layout tools, and offline parametric generators. OpenSCAD-based projects and browser tools let you change dimensions, dividers, labels, magnet pockets, and other features instead of accepting a fixed STL.

One important qualification: “Gridfinity compatible” does not always mean that every part in the ecosystem will fit every other part perfectly. Some community designs add magnets, clips, screws, latches, drawers, lids, or modified baseplate geometry. Check the actual footprint, socket, retention method, and dimensional assumptions before printing a large quantity.

What to print first

Do not begin by filling an entire workshop with hundreds of bins. The most reliable approach is to test a small layout and let the first week of use reveal what needs changing.

  1. Measure the storage space. Record the drawer’s usable width, depth, and height. Measure from the actual inside surfaces, not from the cabinet’s advertised dimensions. Account for drawer slides, lips, handles, and any obstruction.
  2. Measure the tools and parts. A tape measure is adequate for rough planning, but a digital caliper is useful for custom holders, small hardware, and checking clearances.
  3. Sketch the grid. Work out how many 42 mm cells fit across and front-to-back. Leave clearance where the drawer is tapered, obstructed, or difficult to access.
  4. Choose a compatible baseplate. Select a standard, pressure-fit, magnetic, screw-mounted, or drawer-specific design. The best choice depends on whether the plate must be removable, permanently fixed, or resistant to movement.
  5. Print a small test set. Start with one baseplate and a few open bins. Test fit, layer adhesion, drawer clearance, and how easily the bins can be removed with one hand.
  6. Add task-specific modules. Print divided bins for fasteners and dedicated holders only for tools used often enough to justify their extra design and print time.
  7. Expand incrementally. Keep some empty capacity. A layout with a few open cells is easier to adapt than a rigid matrix that leaves no room for the next tool or component.

Baseplates, pressure fit, and magnets

Magnets are optional, not a requirement of the basic concept. The commonly referenced Gridfinity dimensions specify optional magnet pockets for 6 mm diameter × 2 mm thick magnets, with corner placement helping preserve rotational compatibility. Other designs rely entirely on the baseplate socket, pressure fit, clips, screws, or the weight of the bins and their contents.

If your chosen bins use magnetic retention, look for 6 mm × 2 mm neodymium magnets and confirm the model’s pocket dimensions before ordering. Check how many pockets the model uses, whether the magnets are installed in the bin, the baseplate, or both, and whether the polarity must be consistent across the set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Magnets can reduce sliding and make a bin feel more secure when a drawer opens quickly. They also add cost, installation work, and a possible failure point. A pressure-fit design may be preferable when bins must be moved frequently or when the organizer is intended to remain simple and hardware-free. Do not assume that a magnet listing or a baseplate seller’s description applies to every Gridfinity model.

Filament and printer requirements

PLA or PLA+ is a sensible starting material for many Gridfinity bins and baseplates. It is widely available, relatively easy to print, and suitable for ordinary indoor workshop organization. PLA-family filament is also practical when you are still adjusting dimensions and testing different bin designs because failed prints are inexpensive compared with wasting a large amount of a more specialized material.

Material choice should follow the environment and load:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PLA or PLA+: A good first choice for drawers, benches, parts bins, and general indoor organization.
  • More heat-resistant materials: Worth considering if bins will sit in a hot vehicle, unconditioned shed, or near heat-producing equipment.
  • Tougher or more flexible materials: Potentially useful for clips, snap features, or modules exposed to repeated abuse, although they may require more careful printer and slicer tuning.

There is no universal Gridfinity slicer profile. Layer height, wall count, infill, nozzle size, orientation, print speed, and temperature depend on the printer, filament, geometry, and the strength or appearance you need. A sensible beginner setup is a moderate layer height, ordinary perimeter and top/bottom settings, and a small test print before committing to a drawer-wide grid.

A large-format printer is not mandatory. A machine with a build plate around 150 mm can still produce useful bins and baseplate sections, although larger baseplates may need to be divided, tiled, or assembled from multiple pieces. When comparing an FDM printer for workshop organization, prioritize reliable first-layer performance, usable build volume, material compatibility, repeatability, and the amount of supervision you are willing to provide—not a claim that one particular machine is required.

For readers who already own a printer, the cheapest starting point is usually a small quantity of filament and a test layout. For readers without a printer, compare the cost of a suitable FDM machine, filament, failed prints, and design time with the value of the storage problem being solved. Gridfinity is most economical when you will continue printing and modifying organizers rather than making only one small tray.

Plan the layout around work frequency

A tidy-looking drawer can still be inefficient if its layout ignores how the tools are used. Organize by frequency and workflow rather than by object category alone.

  • Keep daily-use drivers, cutters, measuring tools, and common fasteners closest to the work area.
  • Use open-front or scoop bins for parts that are grabbed repeatedly.
  • Use divided bins for standardized items such as screws, nuts, washers, connectors, terminals, and fittings.
  • Give an irregular tool a dedicated holder when it is used often enough to justify a custom pocket.
  • Put rarely used items toward the rear or in taller, covered bins.
  • Leave empty cells near groups that are likely to grow.

For a service or construction setup, a useful arrangement might place drill bits, driver bits, common screws, anchors, and measuring tools in the first drawer; specialty fasteners and spare parts in a second; and infrequently used tools in deeper storage. For a bench electronics setup, divided bins may be more valuable than large open containers. The correct layout is the one that reduces both search time and the effort needed to put items away.

Choosing bin types

Open bins

Open bins are the best first print for frequently handled items. They expose the contents, tolerate mixed shapes, and are easy to empty or rearrange. Their weakness is that small parts can become visually confusing unless the bin is labeled or the contents are standardized.

Divided bins

Dividers are useful for screws, nuts, connectors, crimp terminals, and other parts that need separation. Avoid making compartments so small that fingers cannot retrieve the contents. A slightly larger compartment is often faster than a densely packed tray.

Tool-specific holders

A dedicated holder makes a tool’s location obvious and can prevent damage to delicate tips or measuring surfaces. It also consumes design and print time and may become useless if the tool changes. Use custom holders for high-frequency tools or unusually shaped equipment rather than for every object in the workshop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lids and labels

Lids help protect dust-sensitive components and prevent spills during transport, but they slow access. Labels are particularly valuable when several bins look identical. Use a consistent naming system—such as size, thread, length, or electrical rating—rather than relying only on memory.

Common Gridfinity mistakes to avoid

Printing before measuring

Nominal drawer dimensions are not usable dimensions. Measure the opening, the inside walls, the slide hardware, the drawer depth at full extension, and the vertical clearance below the drawer above it. Include the height of labels, lids, and tools that protrude from their bins.

Assuming every model is interchangeable

Confirm the bin footprint, height increments, socket profile, magnet-pocket location, and retention method. If a baseplate and bin come from different generators or community variants, print one of each first and test the interface.

Overfilling the drawer

A fully populated grid can look efficient while making retrieval harder. Bins need enough finger clearance to lift out, and tools need room to be grasped. Empty cells are not wasted space if they make the system easier to use and expand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using magnets without checking polarity or fit

Make a test bin before installing magnets throughout a project. Check that the magnets sit flush or at the intended depth, that neighboring bins attract or repel as designed, and that the chosen baseplate actually includes compatible pockets.

Optimizing for appearance instead of workflow

Color matching and a perfectly filled grid are optional. A bin that can be identified and removed quickly is more valuable than one that merely makes the drawer look uniform.

Ignoring licensing

Gridfinity includes original models, open-source projects, community variants, commercial prints, and modified designs. Read the license and commercial-use terms for each model before selling printed parts, incorporating files into a product, or distributing modified versions. Do not assume that a downloadable file permits every kind of commercial use.

Using generators and custom designs

Fixed STL files are convenient when a standard bin meets the need. Parametric generators become more useful when you need a precise width, depth, height, divider pattern, label, magnet pocket, or tool-shaped cavity. OpenSCAD-based projects can generate files locally, while browser-based layout tools can help arrange bins and baseplates before printing.

A practical custom-design workflow is:

  1. Measure the object and add only the clearance needed for insertion and removal.
  2. Choose the bin footprint in grid units rather than designing an arbitrary external size.
  3. Decide whether the object needs a full pocket, an open-front cutout, a divider, or a simple retaining wall.
  4. Include drainage, debris access, or a finger notch where the workshop environment requires it.
  5. Print a small section of the design before producing the full-height holder.
  6. Mark the design’s dimensions and retention method so future additions remain compatible.

For a custom tool holder, a digital caliper can help measure handle diameter, jaw width, shaft length, and the clearance needed for one-handed removal. Design for the way the tool is grabbed, not merely for a mathematically tight outline.

Buying and setup checklist

  • Printed parts: Start with one compatible baseplate, several open bins, and only the dividers or holders you can immediately use.
  • Filament: Choose PLA or PLA+ for a straightforward first project. If you need additional material, compare PLA filament for Gridfinity by diameter, color, drying requirements, and printer compatibility rather than assuming a particular brand is universally best.
  • Magnets: Buy 6 mm × 2 mm neodymium magnets only when the selected models specify compatible pockets. Verify quantity and polarity requirements.
  • Printer: An FDM printer with a smaller build plate can still make useful parts. Confirm that its actual build volume suits the baseplate sections you intend to print.
  • Measurement: Keep a tape measure or digital caliper available for drawer dimensions and custom holders.
  • Installation: Confirm whether the baseplate is pressure-fit, magnetic, screw-mounted, or intended to remain loose.
  • Expansion: Reserve some drawer capacity and save the generator settings or source files used for each custom module.

Is Gridfinity worth using?

Gridfinity is worth considering when your storage problem changes frequently or when standard organizers do not match the tools and parts you actually use. Its defining advantage is incremental reconfiguration: print a small baseplate, test the workflow, then add or redesign only the modules that improve retrieval.

It is less attractive if you need a completely finished organizer immediately, do not have access to a 3D printer or printing service, or are storing large, heavy tools that do not benefit from small modular bins. It also requires planning, measuring, and occasional redesign. The system does not automatically create an efficient workshop; it gives you a flexible interface for building one.

For most beginners, the best first project is simple: measure one drawer, print a small compatible baseplate and a few open bins in PLA or PLA+, test the fit, and organize the tools you reach for every day. Add magnets only where movement is a problem, and leave room for the next change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gridfinity require magnets?

No. Magnets are optional. Compatible designs may use the baseplate socket, pressure fit, clips, screws, or the weight of the contents instead. If a model specifies magnets, verify the pocket size and quantity before buying them.

Do I need a large 3D printer for Gridfinity?

No. Smaller FDM printers can produce useful bins and baseplate sections. Large layouts may need tiled or divided baseplates, so choose designs that fit your printer’s actual build volume.

What filament is best for Gridfinity?

PLA or PLA+ is a practical starting material for many indoor bins, drawers, and baseplates. Consider a more heat-resistant or tougher material for hot vehicles, outdoor storage, clips, or parts exposed to repeated abuse.

What are the standard Gridfinity dimensions?

The commonly referenced layout uses a 42 mm × 42 mm horizontal grid and 7 mm vertical height increments. Community variants can modify details, so check the specific model’s interface before printing a large set.

How do I plan Gridfinity for a drawer?

Measure the drawer’s usable width, depth, and height, including slides, lips, neighboring drawers, labels, lids, and tool protrusion. Then test one baseplate and a few bins before printing the complete layout.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Gridfinity is a modular storage framework, not a single organizer product. Its 42 mm grid, interchangeable baseplates, bins, and tool holders let a workshop evolve without replacing the entire storage system. Start small, verify compatibility, measure the real workspace, and expand according to retrieval habits rather than filling every available cell.
