GreenWorks Weed Eaters Reviewed: Which 40V, 60V, or 80V Trimmer Makes Sense for Your Yard?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are shopping for a GreenWorks weed eater in 2026, the main question is not whether GreenWorks makes a decent cordless trimmer. It does. The real question is which GreenWorks voltage platform fits your yard, your battery collection, and the kind of growth you are actually cutting.

GreenWorks sells cordless string trimmers across 24V, 40V, 60V, and 80V platforms. That matters because a light 40V 12-inch trimmer and an 80V Pro 16-inch trimmer are not competing tools. One is for quick suburban edge work. The other is for larger lots, thicker weeds, and homeowners trying to replace a light gas trimmer without storing fuel or fighting a pull cord.

For most homeowners, the best all-around GreenWorks weed eater is a 60V 16-inch brushless kit. It has enough power for weekly lawn trimming, fence lines, sidewalk edges, and moderate weeds without the extra weight and cost of many 80V setups. If you already own GreenWorks 80V mower or blower batteries, or you maintain a larger property up to about an acre, the 80V 16-inch models make more sense. For townhomes, small yards, and occasional edging, a 40V model is the better value.

Quick Verdict: Who Should Buy Which GreenWorks Weed Eater?

GreenWorks is strongest as a homeowner battery platform. The trimmers start easily, run quieter than gas, avoid fuel storage, and require very little maintenance beyond charging batteries, replacing line, and keeping the guard and head clean. On our job sites, that low-fuss behavior is the whole point of cordless outdoor tools. When a crew member needs to clean up around temporary fencing, trim near a trailer, or clear grass around a finished walkway, a battery trimmer that starts every time is worth more than a loud engine that needs coaxing.

Greenworks 60V 16 in Cordless String Trimmer, 4.0 Ah Battery
  • POWERFUL 60V BRUSHLESS PERFORMANCE – Equipped with a high-efficiency brushless motor that delivers strong cutting power, longer runtime, and consistent performance for thicker grass and demanding yard tasks.
  • 16" WIDE CUTTING PATH – The 16-inch cutting width helps you cover more ground quickly, reducing trimming time for medium to large yards.
  • ATTACHMENT CAPABLE DESIGN – Attachment-capable shaft allows you to connect compatible Greenworks attachments, expanding one tool into multiple yard solutions.
  • QUICK LINE RELOADING WITH LOAD N’ GO – Features the Load N’ Go trimmer head for fast, hassle-free line reloading, saving time and effort during yard work.
  • COMFORTABLE USE WITH SHOULDER STRAP – Includes an adjustable shoulder strap to help distribute weight evenly and reduce user fatigue during longer trimming sessions.

The tradeoff is runtime and heavy-growth performance. Battery string trimmers are sensitive to grass density, throttle speed, line diameter, and battery amp-hours. A trimmer that feels strong on weekly lawn edges can slow down in waist-high weeds or heavy wet grass. GreenWorks 60V and 80V tools handle those conditions better than 40V tools, but none of these homeowner models should be confused with a commercial brush cutter.

GreenWorks Platform Best For Typical 2026 Cost What to Watch
24V / light 40V Small yards, townhomes, light edging About $60-$100 tool-only; $120-$200 kit Lower power, narrower cut, shorter runtime
40V brushless Suburban lawns, fence lines, regular maintenance About $120-$200 as a kit Good value, but not ideal for thick weeds
60V 16-inch Most homeowners, quarter-acre to larger suburban lots About $180-$280 as a kit Battery size changes runtime and weight
80V 16-inch Larger lots, thicker growth, light gas replacement About $220-$330 as a kit Heavier system, higher battery cost

What GreenWorks Gets Right

The biggest advantage is convenience. A GreenWorks weed eater does not need mixed fuel, carburetor cleaning, winterizing, spark plugs, or pull-start troubleshooting. Charge the battery, click it into the tool, check the line, and work. For a homeowner who trims 20 to 45 minutes per week during the growing season, that simplicity is a real benefit.

Noise is another strong point. Battery trimmers are not silent, and the line still makes a sharp cutting sound, but they are much easier to live with than gas units. That matters in neighborhoods with close houses, HOA rules, small lots, and local restrictions on gas-powered lawn equipment. Some cities have already restricted combustion-engine lawn tools, including string trimmers, and more local governments are considering rules around noise and emissions. You still need to follow local hours-of-operation rules, but a battery trimmer gives you fewer neighbor problems.

GreenWorks also does well on price. In current 2026 pricing, small GreenWorks 40V tool-only trimmers can be found around $60-$100, 40V kits commonly land around $120-$200, 60V kits around $180-$280, and 80V kits around $220-$330 depending on battery size, charger, shaft design, and sale timing. Observed examples include a 40V 12-inch tool-only model around $59.99, a 60V 16-inch carbon-fiber-shaft kit around $228.00, and an 80V 16-inch kit around $269.99.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The battery ecosystem is useful if you stay disciplined. If you already own a GreenWorks mower, blower, hedge trimmer, or chainsaw in the same voltage family, a tool-only weed eater can be a strong buy. But do not assume GreenWorks batteries are universal. A 40V battery will not run a 60V or 80V trimmer. Voltage family comes first, then amp-hour, then charger compatibility.

Where GreenWorks Weed Eaters Fall Short

The weak point is not starting or maintenance. It is expectation management. A homeowner who buys a compact 40V trimmer and expects gas-like cutting in dense ditch weeds is going to be disappointed. A 12-inch cutting swath and light line are built for lawn edges, not clearing a neglected back lot.

Runtime claims also need context. An official 40V 12-inch model is listed with up to 33 minutes of runtime using a 2Ah battery, a 7.3-pound weight, auto-feed line, and a 3-year tool warranty. That is a useful number for light trimming, but runtime drops when the grass is wet, the line is extended fully, the head is buried in thick growth, or the user runs high speed the entire time.

Line feed can be another frustration. Some lighter models use auto-feed heads, while stronger units often use bump-feed or Load N Go style heads. In daily use, the head design can matter more than a small rpm difference. A good bump-feed head that reloads cleanly saves time. A fussy head makes a good motor feel worse than it is.

Weight should be judged with the battery installed. Bare-tool weights can look friendly on a product page, but a 2.5Ah or 4.0Ah battery changes the balance. That matters when trimming a long fence line, edging both sides of a driveway, or working around a slope. If your yard takes more than 30 minutes of trimming, balance and shoulder fatigue are part of the purchase decision.

40V GreenWorks Trimmers: Best for Small Yards and Light Edging

The 40V GreenWorks weed eaters are the value side of the lineup. They make sense for townhomes, small suburban lots, fence lines, mailbox posts, walkway edges, and weekly maintenance where grass is not being allowed to get out of hand.

A representative 40V 12-inch GreenWorks trimmer lists up to 33 minutes of runtime with a 2Ah battery, 7.3 pounds of weight, auto-feed line, and a 3-year tool warranty. A 12-inch cutting path is not large, but it is plenty for trimming around beds and walks on a small property. Official specifications for a stronger 40V 15-inch brushless model include a 15-inch cutting path, .080-inch spiral twisted line, bump feed, a top-mounted motor, and a 3-year battery warranty.

The practical difference between those two 40V styles is meaningful. A 12-inch auto-feed model is about low cost and easy handling. A 15-inch brushless bump-feed model is closer to a real weekly lawn tool. If you have a quarter-acre lot with a fence, several planting beds, and a long sidewalk edge, choose the stronger 40V model or step up to 60V.

Who Should Buy 40V?

Buy 40V if your trimming sessions are usually under 20 to 30 minutes, your grass is maintained weekly, and you care more about light weight than maximum power. It is also a good choice if you already own GreenWorks 40V batteries. A tool-only 40V trimmer around $60-$100 can be a good deal when you already have a compatible battery and charger.

Skip 40V if you regularly cut thick weeds, maintain a large corner lot, or want to replace a gas trimmer. It can do more than many people expect, but it is not the platform we would choose for rough growth.

60V GreenWorks Trimmers: The Sweet Spot for Most Homeowners

The 60V GreenWorks trimmers are where the lineup starts to feel more serious. A current 60V 16-inch GreenWorks model is listed with 6,000 rpm, a 2.5Ah battery and charger kit, up to 53 minutes of claimed runtime, 26cc gas-equivalent positioning, and a 4-year warranty. A 60V 16-inch carbon-fiber-shaft kit has been observed around $228.00 with strong customer volume and ratings.

For most homeowners, this is the right class. The 16-inch cutting width covers ground faster than a 12-inch or 13-inch trimmer, and the 60V motor has enough torque for normal weekly trimming plus moderate overgrowth. It is also usually less expensive and less bulky than an 80V setup.

On a typical suburban property, use low speed for finished edges and open grass borders, then switch to high speed only when you hit dense patches. That simple habit improves runtime, reduces thrown debris, and gives you better control near siding, mulch beds, and window wells.

Best Use Case for 60V

A 60V 16-inch brushless GreenWorks weed eater is a strong fit for homeowners with a quarter-acre to half-acre lot, a fenced backyard, sidewalks, planting beds, and routine weekly trimming. It is also the platform we would recommend to someone buying their first GreenWorks outdoor tool kit, because the balance of cost, power, and runtime is better than the entry-level models.

  • 4-YEAR TOOL & BATTERY WARRANTY – Enjoy peace of mind with a 4-year limited warranty on both the tools and the battery, backed by Greenworks’ trusted support in the U.S.

If you want one battery to run a mower, blower, and trimmer, price the whole system before buying. The trimmer kit may be $180-$280, but a spare battery can materially increase total cost. A 2.0Ah battery is cheaper and lighter. A 2.5Ah to 4.0Ah battery usually gives better runtime but adds weight.

80V GreenWorks Trimmers: Best for Larger Lots and Gas Replacement

The 80V GreenWorks Pro trimmers are the heavy homeowner choice. A current GreenWorks 80V 16-inch kit listing showed $269.99, a large review count, and a 4.3-star rating. Retail listings describe some GreenWorks Pro 80V 16-inch models as equivalent to a 27cc gas string trimmer and suitable for yards up to 1 acre. Other current product data lists a 16-inch cutting width, 6,200 rpm speed, 6.6-pound tool weight, 65-inch length, and battery power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The strongest reason to buy 80V is existing battery ownership. If you already own a GreenWorks 80V mower or blower, staying on the same platform is usually smarter than starting a second battery family. The second reason is property size. A larger lot with long fence runs, drainage areas, outbuildings, and heavier seasonal growth benefits from the extra power.

The caution is weight and cost. An 80V battery system is not as nimble as a small 40V trimmer. If your yard is small, the extra voltage can be overkill. You may spend more money and carry more weight without getting a better weekly experience.

Attachment-Capable Models

Some GreenWorks 80V models are attachment-capable, which means the powerhead can accept compatible attachments such as an edger, pole saw, hedge trimmer, or cultivator. This can be useful if you want one motor platform for several yard tasks. It can also add cost and complexity.

Before buying an attachment-capable model, check the shaft connection, approved attachment list, warranty language, and total price. A dedicated edger may be better if you edge long concrete walks every week. A split-shaft attachment system is better when storage space is tight and you want occasional multi-tool flexibility.

Real 2026 Cost of Ownership

The shelf price is only part of the decision. The full cost is the trimmer, battery, charger, spare battery if needed, replacement line, and any attachments. Tool-only pricing is attractive only when you already own compatible batteries in the same voltage platform.

Item Typical 2026 Cost Impact Contractor Take
40V tool-only trimmer About $60-$100 Good only if you already own a GreenWorks 40V battery and charger
40V kit About $120-$200 Best for small yards and low trimming hours
60V kit About $180-$280 Best value for most homeowners starting fresh
80V kit About $220-$330 Best for larger lots or existing 80V owners
Spare battery Often the biggest add-on cost Worth it if trimming takes longer than one charge
Replacement line Modest recurring cost Use the diameter listed for your head, commonly .065 or .080 inch

Line diameter is not a small detail. Most GreenWorks homeowner string trimmers use either .065-inch or .080-inch line, while heavier-duty models may accept thicker line. Using oversized line can reduce feed reliability, strain the motor, and shorten runtime. Using undersized line can work, but it may break faster and cut less cleanly in coarse grass.

Runtime: What to Expect in a Real Yard

Runtime depends on four things: battery amp-hours, throttle speed, grass density, and how aggressively you push the head into the work. A claimed 33-minute or 53-minute runtime is best understood as a controlled reference point, not a promise for every yard.

60V Cordless String Trimmer with 2.5Ah Battery & Fast Charger, 1200W Brushless Motor, 17" Cutting Swath, Dual Speed 6100/4600 RPM, 27 Min Runtime, Dual-Line Bump Feed Weed Eater, Power Head Compatible
  • POWERFUL 60V CORDLESS PERFORMANCE: Equipped with a 60V 2.5Ah lithium battery and a 1200W brushless motor, this cordless string trimmer delivers gas-like power without the hassle of gas, cords, or emissions. Enjoy powerful cutting with lower noise, reduced vibration, and longer motor life.
  • 17" WIDE CUTTING SWATH & DUAL-SPEED CONTROL: The 17-inch cutting width allows you to cover more ground with every pass. Dual-speed trigger control (6100 RPM / 4600 RPM) lets you switch between high power for dense weeds and lower speed for light trimming, giving you greater control and efficiency.
  • LONG RUNTIME & FAST CHARGING: The included 2.5Ah battery provides up to 27 minutes of runtime, perfect for large yard maintenance. With 1-hour fast charging, you can quickly recharge and get back to work without long interruptions.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC DESIGN: Weighing only 15 lbs , this weed wacker is designed for comfort and easy maneuverability. The anti-slip handle and balanced ergonomic design reduce fatigue, making it suitable for extended use by homeowners of all experience levels.
  • DUAL-LINE TAP FEED SYSTEM: Features a durable 0.095" reinforced nylon trimmer line for efficient cutting. The bump feed system releases more line with a simple tap on the ground, allowing continuous trimming without stopping. Includes 3 extra spools (27 ft each).

For a small maintained yard, a 2Ah or 2.5Ah battery may finish the job comfortably. For a larger lot with fencing, slopes, and thick back edges, you may need a second battery. If you trim only after the grass gets tall, expect runtime to drop sharply because the tool is doing more cutting and the motor is under higher load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is also a workflow advantage to trimming at the right time. When weeds are tall, trim before mowing, then mow to collect and chop clippings. For the cleanest visible line along sidewalks and driveways, mow first and edge afterward. That sequence gives you a crisp border without leaving ragged grass against fresh-cut turf.

Safety and Site Protection

A battery weed eater is still a high-speed cutting tool. The line can throw gravel, mulch, metal fragments, acorns, wire, glass, and irrigation parts. We treat trimmer work around finished construction with the same caution we use around saws and grinders: control the debris path first, then cut.

Wear safety glasses, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and hearing protection when appropriate. Keep children, pets, vehicles, and bystanders away from the discharge path. Do not trim toward windows, parked cars, painted doors, stained fences, exposed waterproofing, or soft siding. The damage from one pebble can cost more than the trimmer.

Keep the guard installed. Removing it may seem like a way to get more cutting width, but it lets the line run longer than designed, overloads the motor, throws more debris, and reduces control. It can also create warranty and safety problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Construction and Renovation Checklist

For homeowners doing work around a remodel, deck build, siding replacement, patio install, or drainage project, walk the area before trimming. Shield windows and glass doors. Stay away from fresh paint, fresh stain, uncured sealants, exposed housewrap, waterproofing membranes, and new softscape edging. Flag irrigation heads, valve boxes, low-voltage lighting, invisible fence wire, drain outlets, and temporary utility markings.

Keep clippings away from HVAC condensers. Grass packed into condenser fins reduces airflow and makes the unit work harder. Also avoid throwing debris into window wells, open crawlspace vents, fresh mulch, pool equipment pads, and exterior outlets.

If you use a corded charger outdoors or in a garage, follow basic electrical safety. Use undamaged cords, keep connections dry, avoid overloaded extension cords, and do not run cords where they can be cut by the trimmer or driven over. Battery charging should happen in a dry, ventilated area away from direct heat and combustible clutter.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

Most GreenWorks weed eater work is squarely DIY. Weekly lawn edges, fence lines, mailbox posts, patio borders, and light weeds are exactly what these tools are built for. If you can safely walk the yard, identify obstacles, and control the discharge path, you can handle normal trimming.

Best Value
Greenworks Pro 60-Volt Max 13-in Straight Cordless String Trimmer- ST60B00 (Tool ONLY- Battery and Charger NOT Included)
  • Works with all Greenworks 60V batteries and chargers
  • Greenworks pro 60 Volt cordless string trimmer provides the power you need for yards up to 1/2 acre
  • 11 – 13 inch cut path – with high visibility guard
  • Dual .080-in twisted line with convenient bump feed head
  • High low speed selector and variable speed trigger

Hire a pro when the work changes from trimming to clearing. If the property has knee-high or waist-high growth, hidden debris, poison ivy, steep slopes, drainage ditches, large rocks, wire fencing, or unknown utilities, a homeowner trimmer is the wrong tool. That kind of work may need a brush cutter, walk-behind brush mower, protective shields, and someone used to reading rough ground.

Also hire help near construction-sensitive areas if the cost of damage is high. Trimming next to new windows, fresh exterior paint, waterproofing, pool equipment, copper lines, mini-split refrigerant lines, or exposed low-voltage systems should be done slowly, and sometimes by hand. A $250 trimmer can cause a $1,000 repair in one careless pass.

Final Recommendation

GreenWorks weed eaters are a good buy when you match the model to the yard. The 40V tools are practical for small lawns, light edging, and homeowners who already own 40V batteries. The 60V 16-inch brushless kits are the best all-around choice for most homeowners because they offer a better mix of power, runtime, weight, and cost. The 80V models are the right call for larger lots, thicker growth, and users already invested in GreenWorks 80V batteries.

Do not buy on voltage alone. Check the cutting width, line diameter, head type, battery amp-hours, weight with battery, warranty, and whether the kit includes a charger. Price the complete setup before deciding. A cheap tool-only trimmer is not cheap if it forces you to buy a separate battery and charger at full price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Our practical pick for a typical homeowner is a GreenWorks 60V 16-inch brushless kit with a 2.5Ah or larger battery. It has enough power for regular yard maintenance, costs less than many 80V setups, and avoids the maintenance headaches of gas. For small yards, save the money and buy 40V. For one-acre properties or light gas replacement, step up to 80V.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a GreenWorks weed eater as powerful as gas?

The stronger 60V and 80V GreenWorks trimmers can feel close to light gas trimmers for normal lawn maintenance. Some 80V models are positioned around 26cc to 27cc gas-equivalent performance. They are not a replacement for a commercial brush cutter in heavy brush.

Which GreenWorks voltage is best for most homeowners?

The 60V 16-inch brushless class is the best fit for most homeowners. It has more power than entry 40V models, costs less and usually weighs less than many 80V setups, and handles regular weekly trimming well.

Can I use a 40V GreenWorks battery in a 60V or 80V trimmer?

No. GreenWorks battery compatibility is based on voltage platform. A 40V battery will not run a 60V or 80V tool, so choose your platform before buying tool-only equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does a GreenWorks weed eater battery last per charge?

Runtime depends on battery amp-hours, grass density, throttle speed, and line size. A 40V 12-inch model lists up to 33 minutes with a 2Ah battery, while a 60V 16-inch kit lists up to 53 minutes under claimed conditions. Heavy weeds reduce runtime.

Should I buy tool-only or a kit?

Buy tool-only only if you already own compatible GreenWorks batteries and a charger in the same voltage family. If this is your first GreenWorks outdoor tool, a kit is usually the better value because batteries and chargers are the expensive parts.

What line size do GreenWorks weed eaters use?

Many homeowner GreenWorks trimmers use .065-inch or .080-inch line, with heavier models sometimes accepting thicker line. Use the diameter listed for your exact head because oversized line can feed poorly and strain the motor.
