A greenhouse is an enclosed growing structure that modifies conditions such as light, temperature, humidity and airflow. It can extend a growing season and provide more control over the environment, but it does not maintain ideal conditions on its own: sunlight can heat an enclosure quickly, and crops have different temperature and light needs. The right design depends on your climate, site, crops and whether you plan to grow seasonally or year-round.
What a greenhouse does—and what it cannot do
A greenhouse uses a covering that admits light while enclosing plants in a managed space. The structure and its equipment can help you influence temperature, humidity and airflow. That control is relative, not automatic: conditions change with outdoor weather, sunlight, the greenhouse’s design and how it is operated. The University of Georgia’s guidance describes greenhouse management as a balance of environmental factors rather than a single setpoint (University of Georgia greenhouse guidance).
Sunlight can raise the indoor temperature quickly. Ventilation removes warm air and brings in outdoor air, but ventilation alone cannot cool the greenhouse below the temperature of the incoming outside air. In cold weather, heating may be needed; during hot periods, ventilation may not be enough and additional cooling may be necessary (University of Florida IFAS, greenhouse ventilation).
Plan the greenhouse around the site and its purpose
Choose a bright, practical location
Look for strong light exposure and assess shade from nearby buildings and trees. University of Georgia guidance emphasizes maximizing light, particularly in the morning. Also consider access for watering, maintenance and moving materials, as well as the site’s exposure to local weather. The best location is not determined by light alone: the structure must suit the climate and intended use (University of Georgia greenhouse guidance).

Define the growing goal before selecting a structure
Decide which crops you will grow, when you want to grow them, and whether the greenhouse is for household use or a more intensive production setup. Those choices affect the light, temperature, ventilation and equipment you need. A seasonal structure in a mild climate has different demands from a greenhouse intended to operate through cold weather.
There is no universal greenhouse size or design established by the extension sources. Construction cost, permits and required wind or snow loads also depend on location and design. Confirm applicable local building requirements and structural loads with local authorities or qualified professionals before construction; do not assume a general greenhouse plan is suitable for your site.

Choose glazing by balancing light, strength and upkeep
Common greenhouse coverings include polyethylene film, rigid plastics such as polycarbonate or acrylic, and glass. No one option is best for every structure. Virginia Tech identifies service life, strength, weight, initial cost, light transmission, thermal conductance, maintenance and flammability as factors to weigh (Virginia Cooperative Extension, glazing considerations).
| Covering category | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Polyethylene film | Assess light transmission, expected service life, strength, thermal performance, cost and replacement or maintenance needs for the specific film and structure. |
| Rigid plastic, including polycarbonate or acrylic | Compare weight, strength, light transmission, thermal conductance, durability, initial cost and upkeep for the product and structure. |
| Glass | Consider light transmission, weight, strength, thermal conductance, initial cost, maintenance and how the glazing fits the structure. |
The table identifies decision factors rather than ranking materials: the cited guidance does not establish a single winner or comparable product specifications. Greenhouse structure and glazing can reduce the light received by crops by 30% to 50%, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension’s hydroponic production guide; the figure is a general observation in that guide, not a guaranteed reduction for every covering or greenhouse (Virginia Cooperative Extension, hydroponic production management basics).

Design ventilation and airflow for heat and humidity
Provide a path for fresh air
Ventilation exchanges indoor air for outdoor air. That exchange helps remove heat, manage humidity and support gas exchange. Small greenhouses may rely on openings such as doors and windows; larger setups may combine passive openings with mechanical ventilation. The appropriate arrangement depends on the structure and climate.
University of Florida IFAS describes one air change per minute as a generally accepted minimum summer ventilation rate for temperature control. Treat it as a design reference from that publication, not as a guarantee or universal equipment specification; actual ventilation design must suit the greenhouse. The same guidance notes that ventilation cannot bring indoor air below outdoor temperature (University of Florida IFAS, greenhouse ventilation).

Move air within the greenhouse
Vent openings exchange air with the outdoors; internal circulation helps move air around the crop. Without adequate circulation, conditions can vary across the greenhouse, especially when vents are closed or airflow is uneven. Circulation fans can address stagnant areas, but fan capacity and placement depend on the structure, so do not choose equipment by a generic sizing rule.
Manage humidity and condensation
As greenhouse air cools, moisture can condense. High humidity and wet foliage can create conditions favorable to some plant diseases. Ventilation, internal air circulation, suitable plant spacing and watering practices can help manage moisture, but the right approach varies by season and crop. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service identifies ventilation and internal airflow as critical to managing relative humidity (University of Alaska Fairbanks, Controlling the Greenhouse Environment).

Set temperature and monitoring practices for the crop
Use crop-specific guidance instead of relying on a single ideal greenhouse temperature. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s hydroponic production guide gives example targets of 80°F by day and 60°F at night for tomatoes, and 70°F by day and 60°F at night for lettuce. These are examples from that guide, not universal recommendations for every cultivar or growth stage; the optimum can change as a crop develops (Virginia Cooperative Extension, hydroponic production management basics).
For temperature monitoring, Virginia Tech recommends an aspirated thermostat positioned near canopy level. A thermometer and hygrometer can also help a grower track temperature and humidity; select monitoring equipment that fits the greenhouse and the decisions you need to make. The cited guidance does not endorse a particular brand or model.
