Green and purple basil are color groups, not reliable flavor categories. Genovese is a green sweet-basil cultivar commonly used for pesto and Italian dishes; edible purple-leaf cultivars can bring color to salads, garnishes, and flavored vinegar. For flavor or growing performance, compare named cultivars rather than choosing by leaf color alone.

These are useful tendencies, not a universal flavor ranking. Iowa State Extension highlights purple basil for fresh salads and flavored vinegar; UF/IFAS describes purple cultivars as a way to add color to dishes and green Genovese and Lettuce Leaf types as large-leaved options for pesto. UC Davis describes Dark Opal and Purple Ruffles as food-preparation varieties with minor flavor nuances. Iowa State University Extension, UF/IFAS, and the UC Davis Western Institute for Food Safety and Security provide cultivar-specific context.
Does purple basil taste different?
It can, but leaf color alone does not tell you how it will taste. Flavor depends on cultivar, and the available descriptions do not establish that purple basil is always stronger, spicier, or less sweet than green basil. If flavor is your priority, choose a named cultivar and use its description rather than relying on the color label. Purdue Extension FoodLink likewise notes that basil varieties may have different flavors.
What to use each type for
Green sweet basil
Choose Genovese or another green sweet-basil cultivar when you want a familiar basil for pesto or Italian cooking. Genovese is a named cultivar, not a promise that every green basil will have the same flavor or leaf size.

Purple-leaf basil
Purple basil is edible and can add visual contrast to fresh salads, garnishes, and flavored vinegar. Its color can be a reason to grow or serve it, even when you are not seeking a different flavor.
Do not confuse purple leaves with purple stems
Thai basil may have purple stems, narrow leaves, and an anise-like flavor with licorice notes and a little spice. That is a distinct culinary type; purple stems do not make it interchangeable with purple-leaf sweet basil.

How to choose and grow basil
Choose by cultivar and purpose
- For pesto and Italian dishes, look for Genovese or another green sweet-basil cultivar.
- For purple color in salads, garnishes, or vinegar, look for a named purple-leaf type such as Dark Opal or Purple Ruffles.
- If taste is the deciding factor, compare cultivar descriptions: color alone is not a dependable flavor guide.
- If disease is a concern in your area, check cultivar traits and local recommendations; disease resistance is not uniform across basil.
Meet basil’s general growing needs
Maryland Extension recommends full sun—six or more hours of direct summer sun—along with moist, well-drained soil, and planting after frost danger has passed. It also advises pinching stems to encourage compact growth and cautions that heavy fertilization can reduce flavor. These are general basil recommendations, not a guarantee that every cultivar or climate has identical needs. See University of Maryland Extension’s home-garden guidance and Iowa State Extension’s basil guide.
Find seed by name
Search for “Genovese basil seeds” for a green sweet-basil option, or “Dark Opal basil seeds” and “purple basil seeds” for purple-leaf options. A named cultivar is more informative than a color-only label; seed availability varies by supplier.
