Granot Loma is a huge Adirondack Rustic summer estate on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Historical Society of Michigan’s 2025 conference booklet calls it “the world’s largest log lodge,” but the National Register record does not certify a global size ranking. The most accurate description is a vast, historically significant log-and-fieldstone lodge whose scale and self-sufficient estate plan make it exceptional—and whose grounds remain private.
Where is Granot Loma?
Granot Loma stands on the Lake Superior shore in Powell Township, Marquette County, north of Thoneys Point along County Road 550. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the Louis G. and Marie Young Kaufman Summer Estate.

The property is not a public attraction in the usual sense. Powell Township’s 2021 master plan, adopted in 2022, says the lodge and surrounding land remain privately owned and are not generally open to the public. Do not plan on arriving for an unannounced tour or assuming that public visitor facilities are available.

Who built Granot Loma, and when?
Detroit financier Louis G. Kaufman commissioned the estate. Construction began in 1919. Powell Township gives 1927 as the completion year, while the architectural history records work and additions extending from 1919 through 1928. Together, those accounts describe a long construction program rather than a single, finished-in-one-season building project.

A phased building program
- The principal construction period ran from 1919 to 1923.
- Further work continued from 1923 to 1925.
- Additions were made around 1924 and again in 1927 or 1928.
- American Log Restoration carried out log repair in 1994.
The National Register listing was published in 1991 and identifies the property’s historic significance, associated architects and significant person.
How large is the lodge?
SAH Archipedia reports a 215-by-300-foot, L-shaped plan containing fifty rooms and thirty-two fireplaces. Those are architectural figures reported by that source, not measurements from a current public inspection.
| Feature | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Plan | L-shaped |
| Overall dimensions | 215 by 300 feet |
| Rooms | 50 |
| Fireplaces | 32 |
| Setting | Granite outcrop at the edge of Lake Superior |
These dimensions explain why the lodge is often described in superlative terms. They do not, by themselves, establish that it is the largest log building in the world: that depends on how “largest” is defined and which buildings are compared.

What makes its construction unusual?
Granot Loma follows the Adirondack Rustic tradition associated with American great camps, but its construction is far more ambitious than a typical rustic retreat. The lodge combines heavy logs and fieldstone with steel, concrete and glass engineering. That combination allowed the designers to create a very large, durable building while preserving the visual language of a wilderness camp.
Logs and fieldstone
Logs provide the characteristic exterior and interior expression, while fieldstone anchors the building to its rocky Lake Superior site. The materials make the lodge look informal and natural even though the underlying project required substantial structural planning.
Lakefront siting
The L-shaped building occupies a granite outcrop at the water’s edge. Its relationship with the shoreline is part of the design: the estate presents a sense of immersion in the Upper Peninsula landscape rather than standing as an isolated mansion in a conventional garden.

Granot Loma was an estate, not only a cabin
The lodge was the centerpiece of a planned, largely self-sufficient property. Loma Farms included fourteen fireproof farm buildings designed through the Louden Machinery Company’s barn-planning department.

This agricultural complex changes how the property should be understood. Granot Loma was not simply an oversized vacation cabin; it was a working summer estate with food production, animal facilities and support buildings integrated into its operation.
What does the name “Granot Loma” mean?
The name combines the first two letters of the first names of five Kaufman children: Graveraet, Ann, Otto, Louis and Marie. “Granot Loma” is therefore a family name assembled from the children’s names, rather than a traditional place-name from the Upper Peninsula.

Is Granot Loma really the world’s largest log cabin?
The careful answer is that a 2025 Historical Society of Michigan conference booklet describes Kaufman’s fortune as funding “the world’s largest log lodge, Granot Loma, near Marquette.” That is an attributed institutional description, not a global ranking formally established in the National Register record.
“Log lodge” is also more precise than “log cabin.” Granot Loma is a multi-building estate anchored by a 215-by-300-foot lodge engineered with steel, concrete and glass as well as logs and stone. Calling it the Upper Peninsula’s giant log lodge is defensible; presenting the world record as settled fact is not supported by the cited National Register documentation.

Not as a generally open public attraction. Powell Township identifies the lodge and surrounding property as private and not generally accessible. Because the available sources do not establish a regular tour program, admission schedule or visitor center, travelers should not treat Granot Loma like a museum or state historic site.

Why Granot Loma matters to construction and preservation
For builders, Granot Loma is a case study in making rustic materials work at estate scale. The project married logs and fieldstone to structural systems normally associated with much larger conventional buildings. Its long construction and additions period shows how complex projects evolve as requirements, services and architectural ambitions change.
For preservationists, the estate demonstrates that historic significance can reside in an entire setting: the lodge, the shoreline, the agricultural buildings and the relationships among them. Repair work in 1994 also illustrates the continuing maintenance demands of large log construction, where weather exposure and timber condition require specialized care.
