Granite Construction (GVA) Raised 2026 Guidance and Won New Work—Is the Stock Still Below Fair Value?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Granite Construction still screens as potentially undervalued at its October 16, 2026 close of $109.82, but it is not a low-risk bargain. The company raised 2026 revenue guidance to $5.3 billion-$5.5 billion, delivered strong second-quarter growth and expanded its committed-project backlog (CAP). The valuation case depends on turning those awards into cash at the guided margins while controlling project, weather, labor, materials and financing risks.

What changed in Granite’s 2026 update?

Granite Construction increased its full-year revenue outlook by $100 million. Management now expects 2026 revenue of $5.3 billion-$5.5 billion, adjusted EBITDA margin of 12.25%-13.25%, SG&A of 8.25%-8.75% of revenue and capital expenditure of $140 million-$160 million. About $50 million of planned capex is for strategic materials investment.

Chief Financial Officer Staci Woolsey said, “With our performance through the second quarter and opportunities ahead, we are raising our annual revenue guidance range by $100 million.” That statement ties the increase to results already achieved and the opportunity set, rather than to a single new contract.

Second-quarter operating performance

Second-quarter revenue rose 29% year over year to $1.5 billion. Adjusted net income was $101 million, and adjusted EBITDA reached $186 million, up 22% year over year. These are adjusted figures; they should not be treated as a substitute for GAAP earnings or cash flow.

Does the backlog support the higher outlook?

Granite’s CAP increased by $250 million sequentially to $7.4 billion in the second quarter. First-quarter CAP was already a record $7.2 billion. The increase indicates that the company is adding work faster than it is consuming the existing award base.

CAP is a forward revenue measure, not a guarantee of near-term profit. Projects still require final funding, scheduling, procurement and execution. Granite’s disclosures identify funding probability, weather, production costs, labor and supply constraints and contract execution as factors that can delay or reduce conversion. A large CAP balance therefore supports visibility, but its value depends on the margin and cash generated when projects are built.

What investors should track next

  • Quarterly CAP additions versus revenue recognized, to see whether awards are replenishing work at a healthy rate.
  • Gross-margin and adjusted EBITDA-margin trends as large projects move from award to production.
  • Operating cash flow relative to adjusted net income and EBITDA.
  • Any changes in project funding probability, schedules, claims or expected costs.

Why the GAAP loss matters

Granite reported a $320 million GAAP net loss for the first six months of 2026. The result includes a $369 million non-operating loss from convertible-debt transactions. That accounting effect is largely separate from day-to-day construction operations, which is why management highlights adjusted earnings. It is nevertheless relevant to shareholders because convertible instruments can create mark-to-market volatility, dilution considerations and financing risk.

Year-to-date operating cash flow was $142 million. Comparing that cash generation with adjusted earnings is essential: cash flow shows how much profit is being collected after working-capital movements, project billing and payments to suppliers. A sustained gap between adjusted earnings and operating cash flow would weaken the argument that CAP is translating into economic value.

Market capitalization $4.81 billion As reported for that close
Enterprise value $5.47 billion Includes equity and net financing value in the quoted calculation
Forward P/E 14.82 Forward estimate-based multiple
EV/EBITDA 11.26 Market-data multiple; EBITDA basis should be checked against adjusted and reported definitions

AAII’s comparison placed Granite’s EV/EBITDA at 9.8 versus a 13.7 sector median, and price/free cash flow at 11.1 versus 23.6. Its composite value score was 56, rated average. The lower relative multiples suggest a discount, but they do not prove mispricing: differences in leverage, project mix, accounting adjustments and cash conversion can justify different multiples.

What do analyst targets say—and what do they not say?

StockAnalysis, using data attributed to S&P Global Market Intelligence, showed a five-analyst average target of $171.67. Simply Wall St’s October table showed an average target of about $129.33. The spread is a warning that targets are assumptions-based estimates, not intrinsic-value measurements or guaranteed returns.

Three fair-value scenarios

Bull case: awards convert with expanding margins

In the favorable case, CAP remains near record levels, revenue reaches the upper end of the $5.3 billion-$5.5 billion range, and adjusted EBITDA margin reaches the upper half of the 12.25%-13.25% guide. Acquisitions add earnings without an unexpected increase in leverage. Under those conditions, targets above $129 and toward $171.67 become plausible reference points, although they remain forecasts rather than promises.

Base case: guidance is met, but the discount narrows

If revenue lands near the guidance midpoint, margins hold and debt-related accounting volatility fades, Granite can merit current-to-moderate-premium industrial multiples. That framework supports some upside from $109.82, but provides a smaller margin of safety than the highest analyst target implies.

Bear case: CAP proves difficult to monetize

Weather delays, quarry-development costs, labor or supply shortages, unfavorable project execution, weaker funding probability or renewed debt volatility could reduce margins and cash conversion. In that outcome, the $7.4 billion CAP headline would overstate its economic value and the relative-multiple discount could persist.

How to compare Granite with other infrastructure contractors

A useful peer comparison should go beyond the share-price chart. Review the same six dimensions for each contractor:

  1. Backlog and conversion: measure CAP or backlog growth against revenue recognized and cancellations.
  2. Profitability: compare adjusted EBITDA margins, gross-margin direction and the quality of adjustments.
  3. Cash generation: test operating cash flow against adjusted earnings through a full project cycle.
  4. Leverage and financing: examine debt maturities, convertible instruments, dilution and non-operating valuation changes.
  5. Acquisitions: separate acquired revenue from organic growth and assess the capital required to achieve it.
  6. Valuation: compare forward P/E, EV/EBITDA and price/free cash flow only after normalizing definitions and balance-sheet risk.

What could change the fair-value view?

  • Results above or below the $5.3 billion-$5.5 billion revenue range.
  • Adjusted EBITDA margin moving toward 12.25% or 13.25% rather than remaining in the middle.
  • Operating cash flow that confirms or contradicts the $142 million year-to-date level.
  • Evidence that the $7.4 billion CAP is funded, scheduled and profitable.
  • Updates on strategic-materials spending, acquisitions and financing terms.
  • Further convertible-debt gains or losses that obscure the operating trend.

Verdict for investors

Granite is best viewed as a conditional value-and-growth case. Its raised guidance, 29% second-quarter revenue growth and record CAP provide a stronger operating narrative than the share price alone suggests, while the lower relative cash-flow and EV/EBITDA multiples indicate a possible discount. However, the six-month GAAP loss, financing volatility and the unproven conversion of CAP into cash mean fair value is highly execution-dependent. Investors should demand evidence of margin stability and cash conversion before treating the stock as decisively undervalued.
