Yes—the product is real and commercially available. Google’s official name is Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). It reached U.S. store shelves on August 20, 2024, at a launch price of $279.99. The Google Store displayed a temporary price of $239.99 on August 18, 2026, but that promotion should not be treated as the permanent price.
This is more than a cosmetic update: the fourth-generation model adds a substantially larger display, a redesigned interface, an included second-generation temperature sensor, broader HVAC support, Matter compatibility, and new energy-management features. The important caveat for any installation is that “no C wire required” means usually, not universally.

What is new in the fourth generation?
A larger, borderless display
The thermostat has a 2.7-inch circular LCD with a 600 × 600-pixel resolution. Google says it is 60% larger than the previous generation. The borderless crystal-lens design is available in Polished Silver, Polished Gold, and Polished Obsidian.
The unit measures 3.9 inches in diameter, is 1.1 inches deep, and weighs 5.7 ounces. Whether its jewelry-like appearance is “beautiful” is subjective, but the larger screen should be easier to read from across a room.

The built-in Soli sensor detects motion and proximity. From a distance, the display can show one selected item, such as the time, indoor temperature, or outdoor weather. As someone approaches, it can reveal additional information, including humidity or outdoor air quality.
The home screen can be customized, so the feature is more flexible than simply enlarging the older Farsight display.

One temperature sensor is included
Every fourth-generation Learning Thermostat includes one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen). It can prioritize a bedroom at night, a home office during working hours, or another room that runs hotter or colder than the rest of the house.
Google says up to six sensors can be used with one thermostat, and older-generation Nest Temperature Sensors are also supported. The sensor is a meaningful part of the product’s value: it helps address uneven room temperatures without requiring a second thermostat.
Newer energy-management features
- Adaptive Eco: adjusts the temperature while the home is unoccupied, making a smaller change when recovery would be difficult—such as on a cold day—and a larger adjustment when conditions are mild.
- Smart Schedule: creates a starting schedule and learns from household routines. Depending on settings, it can update the schedule automatically or suggest changes in the Google Home app.
- Natural Heating and Cooling: accounts for outdoor conditions that may naturally warm or cool the home, potentially avoiding unnecessary HVAC operation.
- Smart Ventilation: can bring in outdoor air when conditions are suitable and pause ventilation when outdoor air quality is unhealthy, with compatible ventilation equipment.
Google says the thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills. That is Google’s maximum product claim, not a guaranteed result. Actual savings depend on climate, insulation, equipment efficiency, energy prices, schedules, and household behavior.
HVAC compatibility: check before buying
The thermostat is designed for most 24-volt HVAC systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced-air, heat-pump, and radiant systems. Google’s specifications list support for a broad range of equipment and terminals, including:
- Heating stages W1, W2, and W3
- Cooling stages Y1, Y2, and Y3
- Heat pumps with auxiliary, alternate, and emergency heat
- Fan terminals G, G2, and G3
- C, RH, and RC power connections
- Humidifier and dehumidifier connections
- Ventilation connections
That broad list does not mean every wiring arrangement is compatible. Use Google’s compatibility checker before purchasing or disconnecting the existing thermostat.

Does it need a C wire?
Usually, no. The fourth-generation model uses Power Sharing and is designed to operate without a common wire in most homes. Google’s specifications say a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed in limited cases, described as fewer than 1% of systems.

However, Google separately warns that some heating-only, cooling-only, zone-controlled, and heat-pump systems may require additional power support. A system can look simple at the wall and still have wiring or power constraints that matter.
Do not assume that the absence of a C wire is harmless. Run the compatibility check, and consult an HVAC professional if the system has zoning, auxiliary or emergency heat, humidification, dehumidification, ventilation controls, or undocumented wiring. Guidance for C-wire issues is available at Google’s Nest C-wire page.
Installation and setup
Setup requires the Google Home app. The app provides step-by-step installation instructions, but the physical work still depends on the existing HVAC system and wiring.
- Photograph the existing thermostat wiring before disconnecting anything.
- Turn off power to the HVAC equipment at the appropriate breaker or service switch.
- Run Google’s compatibility checker using the existing wire labels and system information.
- Use the included wire labels, mounting screws, trim plate, and steel plate as needed.
- Connect the thermostat, restore power, and complete setup in the Google Home app.
Self-installation may be reasonable for a straightforward, verified 24-volt system. Professional installation is the safer choice for heat pumps, zone-controlled systems, accessory controls, confusing wiring, or anyone uncomfortable working around HVAC equipment. Google promotes professional installation, but service availability and pricing depend on location.

Smart-home compatibility
The thermostat works with Google Home and is Matter-certified. Matter allows core thermostat control through compatible Matter-enabled platforms and voice assistants. Google also supports control through the Google Home app on supported Pixel phones, tablets, and watches; Google’s launch material mentions Pixel Watch and Google TV Streamer control.
Matter should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every Nest feature appears identically in every third-party ecosystem. Basic temperature and mode control are the safest expectations. Learning behavior, Adaptive Eco, detailed scheduling, HVAC monitoring, and other Nest-specific features may remain dependent on Google Home.
HVAC monitoring is an early warning, not a diagnosis
Google promotes HVAC monitoring and alerts that can identify potential system problems or changes in performance. These notifications may help homeowners notice an issue earlier, but they do not replace professional diagnosis, maintenance, or repair. A warning should be treated as a reason to investigate—not proof of a particular failed component.

Should you upgrade from an older Nest?
Upgrade if your household needs room-by-room temperature prioritization, your HVAC system uses ventilation or humidification controls, Matter integration is important, the larger display improves usability, or your existing thermostat is nearing the end of its supported life.
Keep the current Nest if it already meets your needs, you do not use temperature sensors or advanced scheduling, or the new design is the only reason you are considering the purchase. Replacing a working thermostat is not automatically an energy-saving upgrade.
Google has specifically announced the end of software and security support for first- and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. That notice should not automatically be applied to every older Nest model. See Google’s support announcement for the affected generations.
Who should buy it?
- Homeowners buying a new smart thermostat who want Google’s most advanced Nest model.
- Households with bedrooms, offices, or other rooms that do not match the temperature at the main thermostat.
- Google Home users who want Matter support and deeper Google automation.
- Homes with compatible humidification, dehumidification, or ventilation equipment.
- Buyers who value a large, highly visible display and automatic scheduling.
Who should skip it?
- Anyone who only wants inexpensive remote temperature control.
- Owners of a recent Nest that already handles their schedules and comfort well.
- Homes with unusual, zone-controlled, or poorly documented HVAC wiring until compatibility is confirmed.
- People who do not want Google Home for setup and ongoing feature access.
- Buyers expecting guaranteed savings from the “up to 31%” claim.
Price, rebates, and value
The meaningful price distinction is between Google’s $279.99 U.S. launch MSRP and the $239.99 promotional price observed in the Google Store on August 18, 2026. Check the official product page for the current price.
Because the thermostat is ENERGY STAR certified, some buyers may qualify for utility rebates or rewards. Eligibility depends on the provider, location, program dates, and installation requirements. Check with the local utility before assuming a rebate will reduce the purchase cost.
Verdict
The Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is a genuine, substantial redesign—not a leaked product or minor naming refresh. Its strongest advantages are the larger display, included temperature sensor, expanded HVAC support, and more capable energy-management features. It is especially compelling for Google Home households with uneven room temperatures or advanced HVAC equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt is less compelling as a purely cosmetic upgrade, a guaranteed way to cut bills, or a universal DIY replacement. Confirm HVAC compatibility first, treat the C-wire claim as conditional, and compare the current promotional price with the lower-cost standard Nest Thermostat before buying.
